2nd Test: Pakistan v Australia at Sharjah, 11-15 Oct 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Day 1 start scheduled for 10am local time (6am GMT)

Good Morning all for live coverage of Australia in Pakistan Test
series being hosted in Colombo and Sharjah. This is the first day
in the second match of the 3-Test series which Australia lead 1-0
after a rather narrow 41 run win in Colombo.
Despite having a bevy of young players in its team, Pakistan gave
Australia a fright at Colombo but lacked the confidence on the
fifth day and choked in the face of relentless pressure to concede
        the first Test.
Reports say the entire Pakistan team is looking forward to have
another go at the Aussies although its very hot in Sharjah.
Going into his 150th Test, skipper Steve Waugh said, "It's just
another Test for me. The idea is to play well, score some runs,
captain the side well and win the match for Australia.
But Pakistan captain Waqar thinks Pakistan has worked out a
strategy saying, "No doubt, Steve is a great player, but we are in
no mood to give him or anyone else an inch. All I can tell you is,
he (Steve) is in for a hard time. Like every batsman,
he has weaknesses and we plan to exploit those grey areas.
All cricket fans would be looking at Shoaib Akhtar to see if he can
repeat the fireworks of the first test again.
The weather is hot and hot but clear, so bowling will be tough
The pitch seems to be usual Sharjah track, first 3 inches were
relaid a few months ago and may start cracking later as it dries
        up and start turning.
Toss has been won by Waqar and Pakistan will be batting, Waqar has
a bit of a back problem and Kaneria has bee brought in for Sami
Australia has included Bichel for Gillespie
One change each from the teams that played the Colombo test and we
are ready with Imran nazir facing McGrath

Lunch has been taken after a disaster struck Pakistan today
Waqar decided to bat but then the Aussie pacers bowled such a tight
length in the heat to get the outside the body prods by the
        openers
Then the Pak batters had to face Warne and he was on song too,
sweating through his 9 overs to pick up 4 so far
One cannot say many words of praise for the pak batsman as even
their top scorer Razzaq was lucky to survive after an lbw decision
Pakistan have to blame themselves for some poor shots but the tight
bowling caused it too, they are possibly headed for the 17th
lowest test score if no more runs are added after lunch
Please be back in about 50 minutes as its a longer break on this

Play called off for poor light, the red ball perhaps a problem,
every one is tired out too
Hayden carried the Aus innings with a great 74 but Pakistan has a
glimmer of hope after taking 3 wickets in this session
Still a very difficault task for them as Australia have a lead of
132 and plenty of batting to come
Earlier Pakistan set a new record for their lowest test score of 59
all out, due to Warne and the Aus pacers who put on relentless
        pressure, extracting several poor shots
The weather has been horrid, the players must have lost lots of
weight in the humidity and heat out there
Tomorrow we will see Aus trying to carry on to a bigger lead while
Pak attempt an early strike, please join us at 06:00GMT for more
absorbing but hot cricket, goodbye all

Superb defensive 100 by Hayden was the feature of this session,

bowled well but Australia built upa 202 run lead
The odds are now fully in Australia's favour and one can wonder if
a declaration may come at tea?
The heat is certainly enough to have Australia try to shorten the
exposure of their players to it
We will be back after lunch for more, in about 30 minutes

Match State: Lunch - Day 2

play to start shortly and lets see why the run rate was slow, the
        outfield is slow and
The heat horrid, Aus needed to conserve energy and, the ball is not
coming onto the bat and the pak bowlers were bowling a tight line
        too
Gilchrist took a risk and paid, ball was outside off and he tried
to force it but was early and edged
Another point that may make pak fans feel better is that the
fielding in this test has been very good and spirited, chasing the
        ball down and diving around
The quick bowling changes tend to cause batters to take a look,
Hayden did the needful, anchoring the innings
Moreover ball turning a lot too
So wasa not easy going at all for the batsment or the bowlers
       Teams coming out
Hayden looks outfitted in new clothes and must have had a cool icy

A fine performance there in the heat by Hayden particularly but the
Pakistan bowlers and fielders did not wilt and kept coming back
with Saqlain their best for a 4 wicket spell, good support from
the fielders and the other bowlers
The going was tough not only the heat but more so the slow wicket
and outfield with lots of turn, any rash stroke produced a wicket
and thus stroke making will be difficult in the second innings to
        follow
pak will be batting in a few minutes and we need to see if they

stumps, Warne has 8 wickets in this test and Pak lose the series
2-0 and set up another lowest record beating their first innings
        record by 6 runs"

       Pakistan 53/9, Partnership of 1
       Waqar Younis lbw b Warne 0 (4b 0x4 0x6)
       Danish Kaneria 1* (2b) SK Warne 6.5-2-13-4

Today it was the batting that was the leader in terms of
indifferent effort though the bowling was a key factor too
Warne was as fearsome as ever with great support from Bichel and
        McGrath
Pakistan really need to rethink their strategy all over again, the
youngsters need curbing a bit if they are to tackle the Aussies
After the good performance in the first test it was really a
disappointment for Pakistani fans to see the Sharjah test that has
        ended inside two days
A great performance by Australia nad they prove that even given the
heat and humidity they are capable and fit to win
The final test will be on 19th October, Saturday starting at
06:00GMT and one hopes a better performance from Pakistan for some
        consolation
Please be here to follow that game as we say goodbye and any
        comments please to comms@cricinfo.com
We have little doubt the man of the match will be Matt Hayden
This was a victory by an innings and 198 runs and only the second
test since 1946 to end inside 2 days
We are waiting for the presentations
Waqar says not a very happy day, want to sit down and think, very
inexperienced and hopefully will settle and give our best shot
Says overall our bowling was fine but batting was bad
Steve Waugh says bowling was almost perfect and batting of hayden
was great, mentions Warne and inspirational as were his fasties
looks to the third test to get some runs
Man of the Match, award as Clive lloyd has some encouraging words
for the Pak team and it is Hayden he says
Thats all folk and goodbye again
