5th ODI: India v Zimbabwe at Guwahati, 19 Mar 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled at 0330 GMT (0900 local time)

       Good Morning!
Welcome to the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati.
We are here for the final one-day match in the five-match series,
with the series tied at 2-2.
It is a sunny and warm morning here in Guwahati - the maximum
temperature expected today is around the 34 celsius mark.
The humidity is going to cause a bit of problem today - it is going
        to be around 89%.
Guwahati is in the north-east state of Assam. The sun rises a bit
too early here, as India does not have different time zones.
Hence, the sun goes down a bit early too.
The pitch looks a beauty to bat on first up. There is a bit of
grass rolled into it, as the day progresses,
it might start keeping low and offer something for the spinners.
India go into the decider as the favourites, having won the match
        at Hyderabad rather convincingly.
India has a 3-3 record at this venue and have won against Zimbabwe
the only time these two teams met before in Guwahati.
India won that match by seven wickets in March 1993.
In the nine ODI matches played at this venue, the Captain winning
the toss has elected to field first - seven times.
The Toss is going to be crucial, and it is important that the teams
show a lot of discipline by completing the 50 overs right on time.
Time could also play an important role today and the extra balls
        bowled would cost much.
Assam Tea is a legend. The Orthodox leaves to the Broken Orange
        Pekoe…
It would take much more than a warm cup of tea to ease the nerves.
The team that holds the nerves in this crucial decider will take
        the series.
Zimbabwe would have to put up a better show today in the field. In
Hyderabad they completely lost the plot when Yuvraj Singh
        unleashed those cracking shots.
with the Indian selectors to name the squad for the Windies tour on
the 21st, there are a few players who would want to prove
        themselves.
As for Zimbabwe, A victory here would help to boost their morale,
ahead of the series against the mighty Aussies at home.
This has been a very good one-day series, with the fortunes
        swinging both ways
The Marillier magic in Faridabad, Ganguly's batting in Mohali,
Douglas Hondo wonderful spell in Kochi and the Yuvraj Singh blitz
in Hyderabad - all have been memorable.
Ganguly has won the toss and elected to bat first
Both teams make one change each. Brent comes in for Mbangwa. For
India Bharadwaj comes in for Kartik

Zimbabwe falling short by 101 runs, the run chase was never on.
We will be back with you in a short while with the wrap-up of the
        day's play.
A very humid day in Guwahati today. India doing well to bounce
back brilliantly from a position of 1-2 in the five-match series
        to take it 3-2.
The presence of Yuvraj Singh has added a new edge to this Indian
        batting.
Today it was the Punjab Duo of Dinesh Mongia (159*) and Yuvraj
Singh (75) who put the match away from the visitors.
They added 158 runs for the fifth wicket in just 17.5 overs.
Stuart Carlisle and his boys wilted under pressure, the bowlers
really runnin gout of ideas against the onslaught.
In the absence of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, India had
struggled initially in the series to get some explosive runs.
Yuvraj Singh turned it all in the space of sixty balls in
Hyderabad, even today, he smaked the ball to all parts of the
        field.
Mongia too got to his maiden one-day hundred, and went on to make
        159 runs.
He was a bit lucky early in the innings to survive a close call for
lbw, but then nothing can be taken away from this youngster - who
hit a six and 17 fours.
We are awaiting the award ceremony here in Guwahati.
A target of 334 in 48 overs - Zimbabwe were docked two overs for
slow over rate, was always going to be difficult.
Alistair Campbell looked very confident, but holed out to the deep
after making 31 off 38 balls.
Dion Ebrahim and the pinch hitter Travis Friend were simply over-
        whelmed by the huge target.
They just couldn't get things going.
Stuart Carlisle: It has been a good series in fact. Chasing 334 was
always goign to be very hard. Dinesh Mongia played a very good
        knock.
We are looking forward to the World Cup. We have seen some very
good individual performances - Flower Brothers, Campbell,
        Marillier, Hondo...
Sourav Ganguly collects the Pepsi Cup - holds it aloft - loud
        cheers here.
Ganguly: "I thought (Yuvraj Singh) made all the difference, not
taking any credit away from Dinesh Mongia.
It is good to win the series with the youngsters.
The Man of the Match: Dinesh Mongia!
       Man of the Series:Dinesh Mongia
Going back to the Zimbabwe innings, their run chase did not
materialise, the required run rate kept on going up.
The likes of Andy Flower and Grant Flower should have gone in ahead
of Friend and Ebrahim, since the target was a bit too stiff as the
        final result suggests.
Zaheer Khan 3/29 and Harbhajan Singh 4/33 bowled extremely well.
We thoroughly enjoyed bringing you all the live action during the
        Test series and one-day series.
