7th Match: Australia v South Africa at Sydney, 22 Jan 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Welcome to this all important VB Series clash between Australia and
        South Africa
The first match of the second half of the preliminary series, with
each team having played each other twice so far in this series
Australia find themselves on the bottom of the points table and
desparately need another win here to keep in touch with the two
        visiting sides
Likewise South Africa can hardly afford to take this match lightly,
with two successive losses in the double header in Brisbane,
undoing some of the good work at the start of the series when they
took to spot with two first up wins
As it is South Africa hold a four point (one win) lead over the
home side, but an Australian win would see Australia move up to
second and South Africa drop to third on the head to head rule
A South African victory would see Australia lag further behind, two
wins behind both their opponents with three matches to play
The word on the Australian team selection is that Michael Bevan
comes in for Matthew Hayden, who was dropped from the Australian
        squad yesterday
Whilst Brett Lee and Ian Harvey remain out of the Australian side
for the second successive match, could this be a sign of Australia
abandoning the much talked about "rotation" policy
The South Africans have been forced to leave out Jacques Kallis who
has an ankle injury, and Justin Kemp injured his hand kicking a
        beach ball
Boeta Dippenaar replaces Kallis, and Makaya Ntini also comes back
        into the side
South Africa have won the toss and will bat first
The umpires come out onto the field, followed by the Australian
fielders, and finally the South African openers
Glenn McGrath to open from the Paddington end, with Hershelle Gibbs
to take strike, Kirsten at the non-strikers end
0.1 McGrath to Gibbs, wide: no run, back and leaving the delivery, the
ball swings late and wide is called, rather a tough call
0.1 McGrath to Gibbs, no run, back and struggling to defend a short of
a length ball that cuts into his body, the ball deflects to the
        off side
0.2 McGrath to Gibbs, OUT: follows a good length delivery outside off,
just gets a little outside edge on it, Gilchrist collects, and
umpire Harper sends Gibbs on his way

ball, pushing to the off side
0.5 McGrath to Dippenaar, no run, back and safely leaving outside off
0.6 McGrath to Dippenaar, no run, back, playing awkwardly at a good
length ball outside off, waves the bat at it, playing underneath
it, Gilchrist collects, lucky not to get an edge

        or just outside off stump

delivery, streakily gets the most flukish of boundaries with a
thick inside edge away through fine leg
1.3 Gillespie to Kirsten, no run, unconvincing poking at a ball moves
away from off, failing to make contact
1.4 Gillespie to Kirsten, no run, back in a more solid leave of the
        ball this time
1.5 Gillespie to Kirsten, no run, pitched up this time, has Kirsten
baffled as the delivery climes suddenly, moving past his defence,
flicking the top of his pad
1.6 Gillespie to Kirsten, no run, defended out on the off side

Well a resounding win there for the Australians, taking maximum
points by achieving the target well within 40 overs
That puts Australia into second spot on the points table, one point
        above South Africa
For South Africa, a match they would like to quickly forget, their
third loss in a row and suddenly finding themselves on the bottom
        of the table
However with top and bottom separated by a mere four points, and
five matches to go in the preliminary rounds of this competition
there is still much to play for, for all three teams
Next match in the series is on Saturday in Adelaide, where
Australia come up against New Zealand
