4th ODI: New Zealand v England at Auckland, 23 Feb 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 2pm local time (0100 GMT)

Good afternoon from Eden Park where things are getting set for the
4th one day international between England and New Zealand
The weather this morning in Auckland has encompassed all the
seasons, beginning with very wet and cold overnight, to hot and
sunny earlier on, and now it's just grey and overcast, humid and
        warm
Not much sign of rain around at the moment, but with the light
        breeze, you never can tell
The match today is being played on a portable pitch, and today's
one looks brown and dry, perhaps a bit of dampness under the
        surface
England have just the one change from the team that won in Napier -
Vaughan comes in at the expense of Shah
A near sellout crowd of 35 000 is expected in today, though if it's
        wet that number may drop
England have won the toss and elected to bat first. No history in
the pitch, but from the look of it, it could deteriorate later on
Ian Butler is 12th man for New Zealand, and England have none
        officially named
Cains playing in his 150th one day international today
Currently the terraces are packed, but there's still room in the
        ASB and west stands
Umpires wander out to the middle, threough an honour guard of young
        little black caps
And a huge cheer as the black caps come out to field
Cairns leads them out, in his 150th odi today
The English supporters give their openers a good cheer as well,
Trescothick and the leading run scorer odf the series, Nick Knight
       Tuffey to open the bowling
0.1 Tuffey to Trescothick, no run, huge appeal from the fielders and
the crowd as Trescothick is caught on the pads high up on the back
        foot
0.2 Tuffey to Trescothick, no run, left alone this time, more movement
        in the air for Tuffey
0.3 Tuffey to Trescothick, OUT: CAUGHT! Swinging in and full,
Trescothick chips it in the air to Cairns at mid on, taking it
comfortably in his 150th match, and Tuffey is delighted

The huge crowd on the terraces go up as one, in big roar
       Hussain the new batsman
0.4 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, beaten, or maybe pulling the bat inside
the line of a good ball outside the off stump, on the front foot.
The crowd are cheering everything at the moment
0.5 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, Beaten! Genuinely beaten this time,
driving at it on th efront foot, but it moves away and beats the
outside edge. "Ooh!" go the crowd as they see the replay
0.6 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, shorter ball, Hussain lifts the bat away
behind him as it bounces through wide of the off stump

New Zealand always behind the 8 ball after losing early wickets,
the crowd was brought to life by an excellent run-a-ball
partnership between Cairns and Harris, but it was too big a task
England once again playing smarter cricket, apart from some of the
        awful attempts at catching
Cairn's 150th one day international ends in dissappointment, but
it's hard to ask more from him, two wickets, a catch and 58 runs
Thorpe and Vaughan excelled with the bat for England before the
rain, and Vaughan did some excellent work inthe field before
falling awkwardly, and having to be helped from the field
Flintoff finished off the game for England, picking up 4 wickets,
in a best one day bowling effort of 7-1-17-4. He was at times
        unplayable.
So England square the series, coming back from 2-0 down, and it all
rests on the final match in Dunedin on Tuesday
