1st ODI: New Zealand v England at Christchurch, 13 Feb 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

welcome to Jade Stadium in Christchurch for the first National Bank
Series One-Day International between New Zealand and England
it's currently 12:45pm local time (2345 GMT), one hour and 15
minutes out from the scheduled start of play and things are in an
        ambivalent state at the moment
we've had a dumping of overnight rain and it has steadily drizzled
all through the morning, but just over half an hour ago it had
        stopped
the ground staff suggested that once the rain stopped a two hour
clean-up job would be required before a start is possible
that would mean that if all went well from here on it, we would
come close to a start on time at 2pm local time, but it's fairly
likely we'll have a delay, probably small, if the poor weather
        holds off
the forecast for this afternoon is not exactly rosy, with
intermittent showers expected and not likely to clear until much
        later in the day
it's very overcast here, though considerably brighter than it was
this morning, with the Port Hills viewable but for a fine mist/low
        cloud hovering about
all the covers bar one thin strip over the playing wicket itself
remain as the clean-up job is well underway
it's now 1:55pm local time (0055 GMT) and we're definitely going to
get a start on time as there's been no toss, the mower has been
going around the outfield and there's still a bit of excess spray
        coming up behind it
the super-sopper is now out and doing its best to try and extract
it, and the hessian cover on the pitch has just been removed to
expose what looks a fairly greenish wicket at first glance
there haven't been any serious warm-ups as such yet, just a few
players hanging around just inside the boundary tossing the odd
        ball about
the pitch and 30 metre circle markings have been done, there is
keen anticipation for the start of this series from the hopeful
        ground staff clearly!
going by progress thus far, it would be expected a start is likely
no sooner than 3pm local time (0200 GMT) if the weather holds as-
        is, but that's completely unofficial
neither team has been released officially yet, but it's at least
expected that Brendon McCullum will be 12th man for New Zealand,
considering the balance of the side, while the likely five to be
left out for England are Hoggard, Shah, Collingwood, Snape
       and the injured Hollioake
we are using carry-over rules for all One-Day Internationals played
in New Zealand, so there will be no over reductions or
        Duckworth/Lewis considerations until tomorrow
we will try to get in as many overs as possible today, then come
back tomorrow to finish it off - however if play starts on or
before 3pm today, we will be able to use an extra hour tonight to
sneak in a full 50-over match
it's now 2:25pm local time (0125 GMT) and the umpires have just had
a wander around the ground, in particular the outfield, and have
decided to have another inspection at 3pm local time (0200 GMT) -
their main concern is a couple of wet patches
it's now 3:10pm local time (0210 GMT) and the umpires have had an
inspection, at this stage we're aiming for a 4:15pm local time
        (0315 GMT) start
strangely, the word is that it'll be a 42-over per side match if
that's the case, despite the carry-over rule being in effect -
suggesting that practicality of getting a full match in today has
overruled convention which was especially allowed for New
       Zealand by the ICC
an official word has come through to confirm these facts, with a
dinner break set to be taken at 7:12pm local time (0612 GMT) for
40 minutes, aiming for completion of the match by 11:15pm local
        time (1015 GMT)
New Zealand have indeed named Brendon McCullum as 12th man, with
Chris Nevin, Daryl Tuffey and Ian Butler into the side for Adam
Parore, James Franklin and Shane Bond from that which lost the 2nd
VB Series final to South Africa
England have named just the one change from the side that won the
6th ODI against India at Mumbai, with Craig White coming into the
        side for Michael Vaughan
the teams are out in the middle doing their warm-ups at the moment,
and were met by a loud cheer by the crowd as they ran around the
        ground
the crowd has built up rather well considering the cold conditions
here, perhaps not as good as hoped for, but in the situation it's
not bad, it may improved later into the evening as more people
finish work, if the weather holds
it's 3:30pm local time (0230 GMT) and here's the sun! it made a
brief appearance an hour or so ago, but this time it's managed to
stay around for more than 60 seconds!

Match State: Match start scheduled for 4:15pm local time (0315 GMT)

Nasser Hussain has won the toss and England have decided to bat
        first
here come the umpires, a great sight to see at last after a fair
wait, today we have Tony Hill and Evan Watkin officiating, with
Dave Quested doing the TV duties
Fleming leads the New Zealand side out to the middle, followed by
England openers Nick Knight and Marcus Trescothick
it'll be Ian Butler to open the bowling from the Port Hills End to
Trescothick, with Knight at the other end
two slips, third man, gully, point, wide mid off, mid on, square
leg and fine leg in place
0.1 Butler to Trescothick, one run, good start all round, short lifting
ball on off stump, Trescothick stands tall, tapping it down in
close on the off side, good quick single taken with the stroke as
it's played well short of the infield
0.2 Butler to Knight, one run, shortish lifting straight ball, Knight
shuffles across to flick it fine off the hip, underway first ball
also, down to Tuffey at fine leg
0.3 Butler to Trescothick, no run, shortish ball on off stump, tapped
down in close on the off side, looking for another quick run but
it's not on this time as Vincent scoots in from point, keeps
        Trescothick at home
0.4 Butler to Trescothick, no run, good sharp short rising ball on off
stump, stands tall on the crease to defend it down towards point
0.5 Butler to Trescothick, OUT: what a start by Butler! shortish ball
that straightens off the seam, Trescothick fatally shoulders arms,
not accounting for movement and is taken highish on the pad,
        umpire Watkin raises the finger

       England 2/1, Partnership of 2
       ME Trescothick lbw b Butler 1 (4b 0x4 0x6)
       NV Knight 1* (1b) IG Butler 0.5-0-2-1

looked a good call, height the main concern but nobody here seems
to be sad about it! a wicket with his 5th ball in ODIs for Butler,
a dream start for the 20 year old
       Nasser Hussain the new batsman
three slips and a gully for Hussain
0.6 Butler to Hussain, no run, good tight shortish ball on off stump,
defends from the crease, dropping it down in close on the off side

NV Knight 1* (1b) N Hussain 0* (1b)

Butler gets a big round of applause upon completing his opening
over, and half the team come over to him to give him a good pat on
        the back
Daryl Tuffey to open the bowling from the Hadlee Stand End
two slips, gully, third man, point, wide mid off, mid on, square
leg and fine leg in place

his crease to it, taken on the pad and drops down in close on the
leg side, Adams sprints in from square leg to field
1.2 Tuffey to Knight, one run, fuller, straight ball, tapped down in
close on the leg side, good tight quick single taken with the
shot, Adams dives to underarm it at the bowler's end, just wide
but Knight was well safe anyway
1.3 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
shoulders arms through to the keeper
1.4 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, short lifting ball on off stump, sways
half back on the crease to defend, steering it down into the slips
        on the bounce
1.5 Tuffey to Hussain, three runs, full and straight, very little
protection on the leg side, driven down through vacant mid on,
Vettori has to chase from much wider on the leg side, quickly back
for a third, looks touch and go for a second but Hussain scrambles
        through safely
1.6 Tuffey to Knight, no run, fullish, straight ball, firmly pushed
straight back down the pitch on the leg side in defence

End of over 2 (4 runs) England 6/1 (RR: 3.00)
DR Tuffey 1-0-4-0 - Hadlee Stand End
N Hussain 3* (4b) NV Knight 2* (4b)

2.1 Butler to Hussain, no run, pushes forward in defence to a fullish
ball that nips back a long way, taken on the pads, drops down in
close on the leg side, no serious thoughts of an lbw there, moved
        too far
2.2 Butler to Hussain, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump, Hussain
dispatches a half volley with ease through the covers, with an
attacking field in place there are plenty of gaps forward of
square, Cairns nowhere near it at extra cover
2.3 Butler to Hussain, no run, what a beauty! short, rising off a back
of a length and seaming away outside off stump, Hussain is drawn
to it like a moth to flame, well beaten as he flinches at it,
        through to keeper Nevin
2.4 Butler to Hussain, one run, fullish, straight ball, pokes firmly at
it, playing a bit inside out as it came back into him again, but
safely scoops it low to the ground and straight of Cairns who goes
        after it from extra cover
2.5 Butler to Knight, FOUR, overpitched, low full toss, Knight pushes
through the line with minimal effort, driving down through mid on,
they barely run as Cairns goes after it, bread and butter stuff
Butler quickly coming back down to earth in his second over with
two balls tossed up far too full
2.6 Butler to Knight, no run, full outside off stump, strongly drives
into the ground, straight up to Vettori at wide mid off, the crowd
        go up for a catch-that-isn't

End of over 3 (9 runs) England 15/1 (RR: 5.00)
IG Butler 2-0-11-1 - Port Hills End
N Hussain 8* (8b 1x4) NV Knight 6* (6b 1x4)

3.1 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, good shortish ball outside off stump,
nips back in from the seam as Hussain dangerously leaves, flicks
the top of the front pad as he thrusts it forward, through to the
keeper, Tuffey appeals for lbw but turned down by umpire Hill
3.2 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, quick, full and straight, coming right
back into the toes, squeezes it out into the covers in defence
3.3 Tuffey to Hussain, wide: no run, full and wide, angling away
further, Hussain has an almighty swing, chasing after it but
        missing, through to the keeper
3.3 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, good tight shortish ball on off stump,
defends from the crease, watchfully tapping it away to Adams at
        backward point
3.4 Tuffey to Hussain, two runs, overpitched on the legs, strongly
clipped away through midwicket, Vincent just overhauls inside the
        boundary
3.5 Tuffey to Hussain, wide: no run, short and wide outside off stump,
hangs the bat well back out of the way to leave to the keeper
3.5 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, good ball! sharp short rising delivery
just outside off stump, Hussain jumps on the crease, just
withdrawing the bat away from it in time to leave to the keeper
3.6 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, shortish, straight ball, seams back in
to take the thigh pad as Hussain doesn't make any serious attempt
to play a stroke at it, drops down in close on the leg side

End of over 4 (4 runs) England 19/1 (RR: 4.75)
DR Tuffey 2-0-8-0 (2w) - Hadlee Stand End
NV Knight 6* (6b 1x4) N Hussain 10* (14b 1x4)

one of the 12th men Matthew Hoggard comes out to help clean the
base of Knight's boots which seem to have developed a fair turf
        build-up!
4.1 Butler to Knight, no run, very full and straight, Knight leans
forward, jamming the bat right down on it, squeezing out to cover
        in defence
4.2 Butler to Knight, no run, shortish, straight ball, seams into the
pad, drops down in close on the leg side, Adams scoots in from
        square leg to field
4.3 Butler to Knight, no run, good ball! back of a length outside off
stump, Knight pushes forward at it, playing and missing through to
the keeper, shaves just past the outside edge, ever so close, a
gentle enquiry from behind the stumps but nowhere else
4.4 Butler to Knight, FOUR, shot! a bit too full and wide outside off
stump, Knight lays into this one, chasing right after it, slashing
it hard and flat over backward point, an upper-square drive, one
bounce and beats McMillan to the rope out in the deep just behind
        square
4.5 Butler to Knight, wide: no run, digs this one in rather short in
response, but it's loose, wide outside off stump, Knight shapes to
play at it before realising he can't reach it, through to Nevin
4.5 Butler to Knight, no run, quicker, fuller ball coming back in,
taken on the pad as he looked to clip it to leg, rebounds away
        into the covers
4.6 Butler to Knight, FOUR, interesting shot! shortish lifting ball
outside off stump, stands on one leg and pulls it from well
outside off stump over Cairns' head at wide mid on, a couple of
bounces in the deep and away it goes

End of over 5 (9 runs) England 28/1 (RR: 5.60)
IG Butler 3-0-20-1 (1w) - Port Hills End
N Hussain 10* (14b 1x4) NV Knight 14* (12b 3x4)

5.1 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, fair length, straight ball, watchfully
defends from the crease, playing with the full face to defend down
in close on the off side
5.2 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, skips down the track to a fullish,
straight ball, doesn't help him much as he's forced to defend by
pushing it firmly straight up to Vettori at mid on
5.3 Tuffey to Hussain, two runs, fullish ball on off stump, Hussain
gets right under it, scooping high up in the air, but safely well
over McMillan at extra cover, pitches just outside the circle,
played inside out as he looked to play it over midwicket but
        changed his mid late
5.4 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, Hussain all over the place early,
jumping down the track again, but it's short and well outside off
stump, and ends up shouldering arms to it mid-pitch!
5.5 Tuffey to Hussain, FOUR, short rising ball outside off stump, cuts
hard at it but it climbed in on him a bit more than expected,
straight over point, pitches in the deep and just trickles into
        the rope
5.6 Tuffey to Hussain, no run, Hussain again charges down the track,
big swing and a miss, through to the keeper as he fails to
completely get to the pitch of a fullish ball outside off stump

End of over 6 (6 runs) England 34/1 (RR: 5.67)
DR Tuffey 3-0-14-0 (2w) - Hadlee Stand End
NV Knight 14* (12b 3x4) N Hussain 16* (20b 2x4)

Butler's first bowling stint in ODIs is short-lived, just 3 overs,
on comes Chris Cairns at the Port Hills End
6.1 Cairns to Knight, FOUR, poor start for Cairns, too full outside off
stump, strongly squeezed through the covers, Vincent chases to no
        avail
6.2 Cairns to Knight, FOUR, dropped! quick and full outside off stump,
Knight drives fiercely at it, gets a thick edge which flies
quickly and high to Astle's right at second slip, gets two hands
to it but it powers through, and beats McMillan at third man to
        the boundary
6.3 Cairns to Knight, one run, dropped again! unbelievable stuff,
Knight is done by a shortish ball angling in, gets a thick edge
through to Nevin who dives late to his right, and rolls behind
him, another run given away too
6.4 Cairns to Hussain, no run, goodness! almost another! shortish ball
outside off stump, Hussain steers it down to Astle, just short of
him, knees it on the half volley to stop it getting any further
6.5 Cairns to Hussain, no run, quick, fullish ball, looks to clip it
away square but misses, into the pad and rebounds away towards
        square leg where Vincent fields
6.6 Cairns to Hussain, no run, good shortish, straight ball seaming
back in, taken high on the pad and drops down in close on the off
side, well tucked up by that one

End of over 7 (9 runs) England 43/1 (RR: 6.14)
CL Cairns 1-0-9-0 - Port Hills End
NV Knight 23* (15b 5x4) N Hussain 16* (23b 2x4)

9 runs from the over don't tell the full story for Cairns, had the
batsmen in all sorts of trouble for most of that over but his
        behind-the-wicket cordon let him down
neither was a sitter, and Nevin's was particularly sharp, but at
least one of them should've really been taken at this level
7.1 Tuffey to Knight, three runs, full and straight, firmly drives from
the toes down the ground between McMillan at midwicket and the
bowler, quickly back for the third as it's overhauled well inside
        the rope
7.2 Tuffey to Hussain, wide: no run, short and wide, moving further
away outside off stump, leaves well alone through to the keeper
7.2 Tuffey to Hussain, one run, shortish ball outside off stump,
strongly cut down through gully, Butler around at third man to
        field
7.3 Tuffey to Knight, no run, short rising ball outside off stump,
hangs the bat out of the way to leave through to the keeper
7.4 Tuffey to Knight, two runs, full outside off stump, strongly driven
down the ground on the leg side between bowler and Vettori at mid
off, brings up the England 50 from 46 balls as Vettori slides to
stop it well inside the boundary
7.5 Tuffey to Knight, one run, full and straight, firmly driven
straight up the ground on the off side, good quick single taken
with the shot as it just sneaks past the diving Tuffey on his
follow through, Vettori across to field
7.6 Tuffey to Hussain, FOUR, shot! advances down the track more
convincingly this time, picks up a half volley and smacks it down
the ground on the leg side, one bounce and away it goes

End of over 8 (12 runs) England 55/1 (RR: 6.88)
DR Tuffey 4-0-26-0 (3w) - Hadlee Stand End
NV Knight 29* (19b 5x4) N Hussain 21* (25b 3x4)

Knight and Hussain have England off to a flyer after the early loss
of Trescothick, some lucky breaks, but largely good dispatching of
loose balls and making their own luck
8.1 Cairns to Knight, one run, comes around the wicket to the left-
hander, full outside off stump, strongly square drives down to
McMillan at third man, just beating the dive of Harris inside the
        circle at gully
8.2 Cairns to Hussain, no run, fair length, straight ball, tapped down
on the leg side of the pitch, Cairns quickly charges forward to
        field himself
8.3 Cairns to Hussain, (noball) no run, oversteps, quick short lifting
ball outside off stump, Hussain slashes and misses it, sloppy
keeping from Nevin, snatches at it and drops right out of his
gloves towards Astle at second slip
8.3 Cairns to Hussain, no run, short lifting ball outside off stump,
seaming well back in, a lot of movement late, raises the arms well
clear to leave, through to the keeper
8.4 Cairns to Hussain, two runs, fullish ball outside off stump,
strongly forces it from the back foot through extra cover, just
gets it wide of a flat-footed Butler inside the circle standing a
bit straighter, easy two taken as it's overhauled on the short
        boundary
8.5 Cairns to Hussain, no run, fair length ball outside off stump,
moving away late again, shoulders arms through to the keeper
the lights are already on in the gloom of Jade Stadium here,
warming up well now having been switched on a couple of overs ago
8.6 Cairns to Hussain, FOUR, shot! short lifting straight ball, stands
tall on one leg, picking it up strongly from the hip, swinging it
over backward square leg, just pitching inside the rope before
        going away

End of over 9 (8 runs) England 63/1 (RR: 7.00)
CL Cairns 2-0-17-0 (1nb) - Port Hills End
NV Knight 30* (20b 5x4) N Hussain 27* (31b 4x4)

Andre Adams on to bowl for Tuffey at the Hadlee Stand End
9.1 Adams to Knight, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, hangs the
bat well back out of the way to leave through to the keeper, keeps
a little low as it bounces
9.2 Adams to Knight, no run, full and straight, leans well forward,
firmly driving off the toes straight up to McMillan at mid on
9.3 Adams to Knight, no run, oooh! good quickish full ball angling away
outside off stump, Knight drives and misses, beaten for away
movement from the seam and the angle, through to Nevin
9.4 Adams to Knight, no run, full and straight on off stump, half
forward, strongly driving from the toes straight up to McMillan at
        wide mid on
9.5 Adams to Knight, no run, quick and full, straightens off the seam,
Knight pushes half forward, rapped on the pads, Adams appeals
loudly but has little support, wasn't a bad shout either, perhaps
just enough doubt as to whether it was still sufficiently angling
        away to miss off
stump, very close, Adams rather bemused by the early 'not out' from
        umpire Hill
9.6 Adams to Knight, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump, defends
from the crease, tapping it away towards point, first maiden of
        the innings

End of over 10 (maiden) England 63/1 (RR: 6.30)

N Hussain 27* (31b 4x4) NV Knight 30* (26b 5x4)

10.1 Cairns to Hussain, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, leans
well forward, firmly driving back on the off side of the pitch,

40.2 Adams to Caddick, OUT: and Adams ends it all, shortish lifting ball

England end up with a hugely disappointing 196, after being 156/2
into the 27th over and building for a hugely impressive total, but
the wheels fell off once Tuffey snared the dangerous Knight
it all started so well for England, as Knight was supported by
Hussain and Thorpe, progressing the innings at roughly run-a-ball
pace - sometimes it was above 7 an over
but once the middle order was exposed, it was almost as if they
hadn't batted in years the way they approached it, holing out,
though some great catches along the way assisted things in that
        regard
Vettori the star on the bowling front, bowling his 8 overs straight
after coming in as late as the 26th over to bowl, when England
were still going at near run-a-ball pace
to concede only 17 from 8 overs from that point on is remarkable,
and to take three wickets to boot was a great performance
Adams bowled well also, being one of the least-thrashed about
bowlers in the initial onslaught, while Cairns was super-charged
when he came back for his second and third spells
taking 2-12 from 4 overs between them after being pasted for 31
        from his opening 5 overs
New Zealand will come back out in just under 25 minutes time at
7:42pm local time (0642 GMT) to begin their chase for 197 from 42
overs at a required rate of 4.69 per over

we've probably seen the last of the sun today
it'll be Chris Nevin to take first strike to Darren Gough bowling
from the Port Hills End, with Nathan Astle at the non-striker's

side, leaves it well alone through to the keeper
0.1 Gough to Nevin, no run, digs it in very short, much straighter this
time, ducks well underneath it, through to the keeper, that's his
        one allowable bouncer per over
0.2 Gough to Nevin, no run, sharp shortish lifting ball on off stump,
hops on the crease to defend down in close on the off side

boundary at third man, stops it with his boot

Andy Caddick to open the bowling from the Hadlee Stand End
the official crowd figure has been announced, a useful 14,831,
        considering the weather
three slips, third man, backward point, cover, mid on, forward
square leg and fine leg in place
1.1 Caddick to Nevin, no run, fullish, straight ball, firmly stroked
along the ground straight up to mid on
1.2 Caddick to Nevin, no run, oooh! sharp short rising ball outside off
stump, Nevin flashes at it, too tall for him, plays and misses
        through to the keeper
1.3 Caddick to Nevin, no run, good fullish, straight ball, Nevin forced
to watchfully defend from the crease, firmly tapping it up towards
        Hussain at wide mid off

forces it back on the off side of the pitch in defence to the
        bowler
1.5 Caddick to Nevin, FOUR, shot! short rising ball outside off stump,
Nevin uppercuts powerfully, flies high over backward point, just
pitches inside the rope and trickles across, third man can't cut
        that one off
1.6 Caddick to Nevin, wide: no run, full and wide angling down the leg
side, swing and a miss, through to the keeper
1.6 Caddick to Nevin, one run, shortish lifting ball on off stump,
jumps on the crease to squeeze it away backward of point, Nevin is
guilty of ball-watching as there's a diving attempt at a save,
sneaks just past the fielder and an easy run results

bowlers look to continue digging it in short to the two short
        opening batsmen
2.2 Gough to Nevin, FOUR, shot! short rising ball just outside off
stump, uses the pace and the height, uppercutting high over the
slips, just bounces inside the rope, third man far too wide,
didn't even move as it bounced over the rope
2.3 Gough to Nevin, one run, shortish, straight ball, hops on the
crease to tuck it down in close on the leg side, good quick single
taken as square leg comes in to field
2.4 Gough to Astle, one run, shortish lifting ball angling on leg
stump, stands on one leg, pulling it fine, down to Giles at fine
        leg
2.5 Gough to Nevin, no run, oooh! shortish ball outside off stump,
Nevin sways back to give himself a little extra room just outside
off stump, but not enough as he plays a dangerous dabble at it,
        beaten through to the keeper
2.6 Gough to Nevin, one run, fullish ball outside off stump, strongly
square driven to point, good partial stop made there, but it's
parried away by Collingwood towards cover to allow an easy single

it when there was a catching chance over the shoulder, fortunate
        escape

shortish ball on off stump, played straight into the deck, back to

firmly clipped away straight to White roaming across to his left
        at midwicket

jumps on the crease to force it away towards point, good fielding
by Collingwood to prevent it getting any further
3.6 Caddick to Astle, no run, oooh! Astle has an impetuous swing,

4.3 Gough to Astle, one run, shortish lifting straight ball, Astle
tries to pick it up off his hip, just lobbing it safely clear over
midwicket, pitching outside the circle, not overly convincing
4.4 Gough to Nevin, two runs, dropped! fullish ball outside off stump,
scoops up a catch straight up to Hussain at head height at extra
cover, he seemed to pick it up very late, grabs at it belatedly
with his right hand, and goes straight through him for a couple,
        very strange miss
4.5 Gough to Nevin, no run, fullish, straight ball, firmly defends back
on the off side of the pitch
4.6 Gough to Nevin, no run, similar again, firmly pushes up towards mid

9.2 Caddick to Nevin, one run, shortish ball just outside off stump,

around from third man to smartly field and prevent a second
9.3 Caddick to Astle, no run, shortish ball just outside off stump,
jumps on the crease to cut, played straight to backward point on

10.4 Flintoff to Astle, no run, bouncer! not a bad'un either, Astle

there is a deep backward square leg in place, but there was

big over for New Zealand, a real reliever with 12 coming off it,

ago when run-a-ball required was encroaching, we're back to a
simple game of wickets and runs again
White returns, replacing Giles at the Hadlee Stand End
26 needed from 42 balls, 4 wickets in hand is the basic equation
35.1 White to Adams, two runs, fullish ball outside off stump, Adams
tees off again, lofting strongly over extra cover, mistimes it a
little, pitches in the deep and allows Giles to chase it down from
        inside the circle
Astle has a word to Adams, perhaps telling him to try not to play
so many aerial shots with the equation coming back in their favour
again! but whatever Adams is doing right now is definitely
working, the job is half done
Hussain may have mucked up his bowling changes, as someone fresh is
going to have to bowl 2 overs if this goes down to the wire, and
the options available are marginal at best
35.2 White to Adams, one run, oooh! Adams doesn't heed the advice, if
that's what it indeed was, coming down to a shortish, straight
ball, nips back off the seam, drags an inside edge down to fine
        leg along the ground, streaky
35.3 White to Astle, one run, and similar! tight shortish ball on off
stump, cuts and gets a thick bottom edge just down past the
stumps, quick single taken as it is well short of any infielders,

35.4 White to Adams, one run, fullish, straight ball, Adams gets in
behind it, firmly pushes up the ground on the leg side, happens to

the only other real options after those two and White are
        Collingwood and then possibly Trescothick
36.1 Flintoff to Adams, no run, dear oh dear! Adams recklessly charges

36.2 Flintoff to Adams, no run, shortish, straight ball, has a bit of a

36.3 Flintoff to Adams, one run, has another go at a similar short

there's only Caddick of the current bowlers who can bowl 1 more at
        the Port Hills End now
37.1 White to Astle, no run, shortish, straight ball, firmly turned off
the legs straight to Thorpe at wide midwicket
37.2 White to Astle, no run, good tight shortish ball on off stump,
forced from the crease straight up to Giles at mid off
37.3 White to Astle, no run, another good tight ball, cutting back off
the seam to cramp Astle, forces it back down the pitch on the off
        side back to White
37.4 White to Astle, FOUR, Astle advances down the track, turns a fair
length ball into near half-volley length, drives it away through
wide mid on, wide of Gough there, gives chase as it's not
perfectly timed, but it just beats his slide into the rope

38.3 Caddick to Adams, SIX, shot! Adams comes down the track to a
fullish ball outside off stump, launches it hard and flat over
extra cover, just pitches inches over the rope, umpire Watkin
checks with the third umpire, and it shows it just pitching over
        the rope
the six is signalled and the crowd go up in jubilation, New Zealand
have pulled off a tight 4-wicket win with 21 balls to spare
a remarkable game for its twists and turns throughout, firstly
England folding from a position of power at 156/2 into the 27th
over to be all out for 196 inside their allotted overs
then New Zealand came out with an impressive opening stand between
the dominator Nevin and the supporting partner Astle, they carried
on to a position of relative comfort at 136/2 into the 29th over,
but that's when the wheels started falling off as a
succession of silly shots by the middle order saw a mini-
capitulation and suddenly victory was looking a long, long way off
with 53 needed and only 4 wickets in hand - three of whom could be
classified as only occasionally useful with the bat
but it was Adams who decided it was time to 'carpe diem', playing a
sometimes calculated, sometimes cold-blooded, sometimes happy-go-
lucky and very streaky knock, but he made his own luck and it all
        came together
the rock was unquestionably Astle, batting through the entire
innings in different fashion to normal, very slow for much of it,
but he didn't throw his wicket away and the rock held the side
together, particularly through the worrying middle portion of
       the innings
the wrecker was Gough, he had a number of chances in his first
spell not quite go his way due to all sorts of things, but he kept
his head and brushed off the misfortune and tore through the likes
of McMillan, Cairns, Vincent and Harris in an 11-ball
burst of fire, but it wasn't quite enough at the end of the day as
he lacked support from a couple of other bowlers - Caddick and
White being taken to - with only Flintoff and Giles able to keep a
tight rein on things with the ball otherwise
the unbroken 7th wicket stand was worth 54 from just 46 balls,
amazing considering the situation they came together at, and New
Zealand break a losing streak of 5 ODIs in a row - England miss
out on a third win in a row in the process too
and Nathan Astle is named Man of the Match for his gritty anchor
knock, finding a semblance of form after completely losing it in 5
successive innings after succumbing to exhaustion in his return
knock after injury, when he made 95 against Australia at
Adelaide, he fights off some strong contenders in Daniel Vettori,
Andre Adams, Darren Gough and Nick Knight, but in this sort of
game it really had to go to someone from the winning side, and
Astle's hand has been looked up well above the rest
New Zealand gain a crucial edge in this 5-match series, as they now
head to Wellington for the second game at the WestpacTrust Stadium
