Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled at 14.30 local time (9am GMT)

       Good Afternoon!
Welcome to the Exclusive Live Coverage of the third ODI match
between India and England from the MA Chidambaram Stadium in
        Chennai.
The ODI series is tied at 1-1, India winning at Kolkata and England
        coming back strongly in Cuttack.
It is quite a hot afternoon in Chennai and the humidity is quite
        high indeed.
It is about the 90 F or just about 32 degrees celsius.
This is going to be a very exciting match, the day-night encounter.
The outfield is simply superb, looks lush and green.
The pitch should be a very good one for batting and the team
winning the toss might want to bat first.
Sourav Ganguly is not playing in this match and Anil Kumble will
        lead the team.
Ganguly has a pulled hamstring and is giving it a rest.
Chennai, earlier known as Madras, is a port city by the Bay of
        Bengal.
This is also the Cinema capital of South India, the huge movie
        industry is based here.
There are some 80 cinema theatres in an around Chennai!
The population of Chennai is just above the 11 million mark.
The English skipper was born in Chennai and wouldn't be new to the
        city and its weather.
As for cricket, Chennai is by all means the headquarters of
        cricket in South India.
A highly efficient and competitive professional cricket league is
        in place in Chennai.
S Venkatraghavan, the former India Test off spinner and a current
ICC Panel Test Umpire is from Chennai.
The man who changed the face of One Day cricket in India, Krish
        Srikkanth is also from Chennai.
Hemang Badani is the only local player in the Indian side for
        today.
Chennai also has the MRF Pace Academy, which has produced a lot of
        fast bowlers.
India has played three ODIs in Chennai so far, losing to Australia
by one run in the first match ever.
India beat West Indies by four wickets and then in the previous
        match, India lost to Pakistan.
a match in which Saeed Anwar set the highest Individual score in
        ODIs, 194
England has won the toss and elected to bat first
Anil Kumble is the Indian skipper
       The teams are as follows
India team: SR Tendulkar, V Sehwag, D Mongia, VVS Laxman, HK
Badani, S Bangar, +A Ratra, AB Agarkar, *A Kumble, Harbhajan
        Singh, J Srinath.
England team: ME Trescothick, NV Knight, *N Hussain, MP Vaughan, BC
Hollioake, PD Collingwood, A Flintoff, JN Snape, +JS Foster, MJ
        Hoggard, D Gough.
India's best ODI batsman, Sachin Tendulkar does not have a good ODI
        record at this venue
scoring just 12 runs in two matches, with a highest score of 8. His
Test record at Chennai is amazing enough.
All-rounder Sanjay Bangar makes his ODI debut today
England fielding has been exceptional in this series. Paul
Collingwood and Jeremy Snapes are outstanding fielders
If it was Mark Ramprakash who impressed everyone with his fielding
during the Test series, these two players have been simply too
        good.
To add to that, India's poor running between the wicket, helped the
english to pull off a win in Cuttack
It is quite strange that Graham Thorpe can't find a place in the
team. One wonders what wrong Ramprakash did in the Test series
He was quite aggressive with the bat in the Test series, taking the
attack to Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.
It is a brand new day today, the umpires and players are in the
        middle.
Javagal Srinath will bowl, right-arm over the wicket.
It is quite a sticky afternoon, Humidity around the 90% mark
Just the two slips as the umpires wait for the clock to tick over
        past the 1430 mark.
Here we go, Srinath running in to bowl, Trescothick waits...
0.1 Srinath to Trescothick, wide: no run, well wide outside the off,
through to the keeper, called a wide
0.1 Srinath to Trescothick, wide: no run, once again, fired way down
the off side, through to the keeper, the umpire spreads his arms
        to signal a wide.
0.1 Srinath to Trescothick, no run, not too fast, on target, full in
        length, pushed firmly to mid-off
0.2 Srinath to Trescothick, no run, just about medium pace, looking for
the line and length, on target, played back to the bowler.
0.3 Srinath to Trescothick, one run, outside the off, opens the face of
the bat, runs the ball down to third-man

        side, helped around the corner
1.2 Agarkar to Trescothick, no run, keeps the ball well up to the
batsman, just abouton off and middle, forward in defence
Some problems with the sight screen, the perennial problem of the
        advertising stuff not disappearing
We have lost a coupl;e of minutes of the game

2.2 Srinath to Trescothick, FOUR, pitched well up on the leg, hits the
ball through the line and over the fielder at mid-on, four runs!
Badani is the local lad. Robin Singh is definitely the most popular
player in this part of the world, he is leading Tamil Nadu in the
Ranji Trophy match against Mumbai, currenly being played in
        Chennai
2.3 Srinath to Trescothick, one run, opens the face of the bat, runs it

3.1 Agarkar to Knight, no run, on leg and middle, played straight to
        mid-wicket
Prasanna has been writing regularly that Indian bowlers should bowl

        damage done

what the batsman expected it to, tries to play at it and gets a
        thick edge on it

Match State: Innings Break

England not managing to last the 50 overs, they started off
positively with some good shots being played by Knight and
        Trescothick
Nick Knight played an outrageous shot to get out, almost in a hurry
to get back in to the pavilion.
Trescothick fell to a short pitched ball from Agarkar, caught
        behind by Ratra
Hussain mistimed an ambitious pull off the debutant Bangar
Collingwood edged the 'doosra' from Harbhajan Singh to Laxman at
        first slip.
Andrew Flintoff just can't score runs in India and Anil Kumble
        enjoys taking Flintoff's wicket.
Vaughan and Hollioake had trouble in dealing with the spin
Vaughan (43) was caught at point by Tendulkar, trying to cut Kumble
Jeremy Snape (38) played a good hand, before playing across the
line to straight delivery from Agarkar
Hollioake looked completely out of sorts, not picking the spin at
all, still he managed to hang around to make 37 runs.
He was finally dismissed by Agarkar, who went on to clean up Gough
        too to finish with 4/34
Agarkar would be happy to be back in form with the ball.
Last man Hoggard was run out and England were bowled out for 217.
India will have to make 218 runs off 50 overs at 4.36 per over
The Indian fielding was not up to the mark. The field placements
        were not good at all.
Kumble cannot afford to take time to settle in as a skipper.
Javagal Srinath put up a dismal show with the ball, trying to bowl
        too many slower deliveries.
Srinath is struggling to keep up with the game
It was a sad site to see the senior bowler struggle in the field as
the English batsmen took easy runs, playing the ball past him.
Forgive me, it was a sad sight...
Kumble too looks a bit slow on the field, and due to some strange
reason positioned himself a bit too deep at mid-off, allowing easy
        runs away
When, Indians could have applied more presure and kept the English
        score well below 200.
England will look forward to put some pressure on the Indians. They
have the fielders who could do the job for Hussain.
Tendulkar does not have a good record in ODIs played in Chennai
He would look forward to set the record straight.
It is going to be an interesting run chase, we will be back with

We will be back with you shortly, with the wrap up of the India
innings and the Man of the Match award.
       Welcome back.
what an evening of cricket here in Chepauk! India win by four
wickets. They go up 2-1 in the series.
Needing to make 218 for a win, India got off to a cracking start.
There were a lot of great shots played on both sides of the wicket.
Virender Sehwag came out to open the innings with that one man
        called Sachin Tendulkar.
Shots all over the park, Darren Gough going for 31 runs in just
        three overs
The two batsmen put together 107 runs for the first wicket.
Sehwag (51) holed out to Trescothick at mid-wicket off that slow
        offie Snape.
Jeremy Snape was in the act soon, trapping the little master lbw,
who was going for yet another ODI hundred
Tendulkar made 68, and has been chosen as the Man of the Match by
        Lindsay, the match referee.
Agarkar must consider himself very unlcuky indeed, picked up four
wickets giving away just 34 runs.
The Man of the Match: Sachin Tendulkar
VVS Laxman struggled for a long time, struck a few boundaries to
make 26 runs off 53 balls and was cleaned up by Hoggard.
Laxman has been running through a bad phase, completely out of
touch and the bad news came to him soon
dropped for the remaining three ODIs, to be replaced by Mohd Kaif.
Hoggard struck again in the same over, dismissing Mongia (21)
        caught behind.
Andrew Flintoff too bowled very well (10-0-27-0).
These two fast bowlers have done so well in India, it has been a
long time, a very long time that any foreign fast bowlers have
        done so well in India.
Hoggard was not done yet, he dismissed the debutant Bangar (1),
        caught behind by Foster.
Then the twist in fortune happened. Foster dropped Badani. Then
Owais Shah let a ball go through his legs at fine leg, to give
        away four all important runs.
In the meanwhile Hollioake went off the field after bowling just
four overs. England were going to struggle without the extra
        bowler and they did.
Badani too never looked in good form, the pressure clearly told as
he struggled to strike the ball cleanly.
Badani (12) was caught behind off Gough
The hero of the Indian chase was Ajay Ratra, enjoying good fortune,
he played a cameo to see India through.
Ratra made an unbeaten 29 off 32 balls and proved that he has it in
him to do well at the highest level.
Ajit Agarkar remained unbeaten on six.
India went past the England score with 3.2 overs to spare.
Talking after the match, Hussain said that he felt that his team
did not put up enough score on the board.
He also suggested that they were undone by the bounce in the track.
All said and done, Kumble won a match on his debut as a ODI
        captain.
He was quick to commend Agarkar's bowling and Ratra's effort with
        the bat.
The next match of the series will be played in Kanpur on the 28th,
        Monday.
