2nd ODI: South Africa v Australia at Centurion, 24 Mar 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 10am local time (08:00 GMT 19:00 AEDT)

Good morning from a warm Centurion where South Africa have won the
toss and have asked Australia to bat
Australia have brought in Watson and Maher for the injured Harvey
        and Bevan
A minute silince has just been observed for Ben Holioake
at the moment both teams are on the fieldfor the National Anthems
South Africa are unchanged from the first ODI
Allready a packed Centurion with many more outside the gates
An important toss for South Africa to win, and attempt to level the
        7 match series
Surprise chopice is that Telemachus has been included after a poor
        showing at the Wanderers
Some low clouds in the heavens, but expected to be a boiler again
        today
A pitch that looks very hard and firm, some cracks are evident, but
looks to be a great one day pitch
Centurion pitch of course one of the quicker pitches in South
        Africa
Play is still about 15 minutes away, but not much room available
for those outside the ground, must be close to 20,000 in the
        ground
Umpires come out to the middle, followed by Pollock and the South
        African team
Gillcrhist and Hayden come onto the field with a warm welcome from
        this full house
Pollock 2 slips, 3rd man, bwd point, cover, mid off, mid on, sq leg

0.3 Pollock to Gilchrist, no run, on the back foot, alomost from the

clapping, clipped off the toes just past Pollock at mid on

away from the body past cover, week ball from Ntini, well put away

straight drive out the middle past and inside mid off
1.6 Ntini to Gilchrist, three runs, again too full, this time not as
well timed, Klusener races after it from mid off and brings off a

Another polished performance from the Australians
Winning by 45 runs and taking that 2 - 0 lead in this 7 match
        series
The South Africans will have to try and do something with their top
order who have now failed twice in two matches
The bowlers have done their bit, but have been let down by a
        failing top order
For the Australians, not much to do, winning easily with a weakened
side, and they are going to be a force to reckon with in this
        coming world cup
Man of the match will not be to difficult and Jimmy Maher should
        easily take that award
Presentations coming up in a few minutes

confident of going 3 up at this rate
Some excellent fielding by Ponting must not be forgotten, he led
from the front and set a very high standard for his players to
        follow
His bowlers backed him up and all of them kept it tight, apart from
those bowling to Klusener, but that is difficult enough when he is
        in this mood

        and batting award for Klusener

       Ponting
Yes it is nice winning and we played well, bowling and fielding was
        brilliant
The early wickets are cricticasl and it adds to the pressure in the
        middle of the innings
I was pleased hitting the stumps for a change again,
The new players again did well and they will learn as the series
        goes on
We look forward to go to Potch to get used to the area bfore the
        WC,
Maher took his chance today and he batted very well after making a
        lot of runs back home
Man of the Match = Jimmy Maher
