2nd ODI: New Zealand v Zimbabwe at Wellington, 4 Jan 2001

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match scheduled to start at 2pm local time (0100 GMT)

welcome to CricInfo's coverage of the second National Bank Series
One-Day International between New Zealand and Zimbabwe at
        WestpacTrust Stadium in Wellington
it's a fair afternoon weather-wise here, with light cloud
surrounding, but with a strongish breeze coming from the north
        bringing blue skies with it
no immediate threat of rain, but the last 4 One-Day Internationals
in Wellington have all been affected to varying degrees - only one
has managed a complete result, and that took two days to be
        reached
New Zealand are debuting Jacob Oram today, in place of Chris Cairns
in the middle order, while Brooke Walker comes in for Chris Martin
        on this slower looking track
just the one change to the Zimbabwe line-up, with Angus Mackay to
make his One-Day International debut, replacing Travis Friend
Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak has won the toss and elected to bat
first, hoping to exert pressure on the home side again by racking
        up a large total
it's do or die today for New Zealand, a loss today would mean the
ignominy of conceding the first away series win (head-to-head) in
One-Day Internationals for Zimbabwe, with a game to spare
out come the players, to a fair round of applause from this pretty
paltry crowd at this stage, somewhere in the order of two to three
        thousand
it's James Franklin to open the bowling, to Alistair Campbell, with
Trevor Madondo at the non-striker's end
slip, gully, point, cover, mid off, mid on, square leg, long leg
and third man in place for the left arm over the wicket bowler to
        the left handed Campbell
0.1 Franklin to Campbell, no run, good length rising ball outside off
stump, shapes to play but then shuffles back to leave alone
        through to the keeper
big delays as they try to get things sorted behind the bowler's
arm, some photographers have moved a bit too close near the
        sightscreen
0.2 Franklin to Campbell, no run, shortish ball, guided down to Oram at
gully, his first touch of the ball in the international game
0.3 Franklin to Campbell, no run, shoulders arms to a good rising ball
        outside off stump
0.4 Franklin to Campbell, no run, shortish ball, squared around trying
to work it to leg, drops down at his feet, Franklin charges
        through to field
0.5 Franklin to Campbell, two runs, shortish ball outside off stump,
cut down backward of point, Styris around to field from third man
0.6 Franklin to Campbell, FOUR, overpitched, Franklin's over is ruined
with a great lofted shot back over his head, down to the straight
        long on boundary

Scott Styris gets a promotion like Franklin, opening the bowling
        from the City End
1.1 Styris to Madondo, no run, good straight ball on off stump,
watchfully pushed back down the track to Styris
1.2 Styris to Madondo, no run, good rising ball outside off stump,
Madondo tried to force it through the covers from the crease,
deviated away from the edge a long way, very lucky to get away
        with it
1.3 Styris to Madondo, one run, hops on the crease to a short ball,
guiding it down to Franklin at third man
1.4 Styris to Campbell, no run, pushing forward in defence, stroked
away to Sinclair at extra cover
1.5 Styris to Campbell, no run, driven strongly straight up to Astle at
        mid off

ball down forward of square leg, an easy single ambled with the
shot as McMillan fields from squarer

End of over 2 (2 runs) Zimbabwe 8/0 (RR: 4.00)
SB Styris 1-0-2-0
ADR Campbell 7* (9b 1x4) TN Madondo 1* (3b)

2.1 Franklin to Campbell, no run, shortish ball, guided down to Oram in
        the gully
2.2 Franklin to Campbell, no run, cuts and misses outside off stump,
tried to run it away down to third man but it got a bit tight on
        him
2.3 Franklin to Campbell, FOUR, too short outside off stump, strongly
cut down into the ground, the bounce beats Oram in the gully, no
chance for Styris down at third man to field
there wasn't all that much room to play the shot but he got over it
        very well
2.4 Franklin to Campbell, no run, full ball, firmly driven straight up
        to Twose at mid on
2.5 Franklin to Campbell, no run, full and wide outside off stump,
uppishly driven into the covers, mistiming the stroke, Sinclair
makes a superb dive to his right at extra cover to stop it,
bouncing just short, saved a certain four
2.6 Franklin to Campbell, one run, angling on leg stup, worked down to
        Astle at long leg

        in the gully

off stump, gets a thick edge down to Franklin at third man

through the covers, Sinclair gives up the chase early
3.6 Styris to Campbell, no run, strongly driven straight up to McMillan
        at mid on

End of over 4 (6 runs) Zimbabwe 19/0 (RR: 4.75)

4.1 Franklin to Madondo, no run, shortish ball on off stump, hops back
on the crease to defend down to Harris at point
4.2 Franklin to Madondo, one run, driving at a full ball from the
crease, gets it down to Astle at third man
4.3 Franklin to Campbell, one run, firmly worked through midwicket,
great work by Walker from square leg to chase after it, firing
back at the bowler's end, preventing the second run
and just to finish it off, he jogs back over the wicket for the
right handed Madondo on strike to get to square leg, and ties up
        the helpless batsman's shoelaces, a true all-rounder
4.4 Franklin to Madondo, no run, driving and missing outside off stump
at a fine rising ball seaming away from the outside edge
4.5 Franklin to Madondo, no run, shortish ball, hops on the crease,
fending it down in defence in close on the leg side, Walker in to
        field from square leg
4.6 Franklin to Madondo, one run, shortish ball, forced off the back
foot down towards point, Harris makes a superb diving save to his
right, then quickly recovers and fires at the bowler's end as

it flicks the stumps, or so some players think, everyone with hands
on head, as the bails were already knocked off by Franklin on his
run-up to the crease, belatedly the third umpire is called for by
        umpire Hill
it's very close, but benefit of the doubt goes Madondo's way
rightfully, suggestions that the stump had to be knocked out of
the ground anyway, because the bails were off
a brilliant piece of fielding, in or out, either way
5.1 Styris to Madondo, no run, full ball outside off stump, strongly
driven straight up to McMillan at mid off
5.2 Styris to Madondo, no run, full again, firmly driven into the
pitch, Styris tries to take the return above his shoulder, just
letting it slip through the fingers, tidied up by mid off and mid
        on
5.3 Styris to Madondo, no run, shortish ball on leg stump, fends away
around the corner, ballooning away just short of Twose at short
        fine leg
5.4 Styris to Madondo, one run, stroked up towards Astle at mid on,
easy quick run taken with the shot
5.5 Styris to Campbell, no run, steps forward, looking to play
assertively, but is forced to wait for a slower ball, drops it
tamely in close on the off side in defence
5.6 Styris to Campbell, no run, stretches well forward, compactly in
defence with bat/pad together, playing it away into the covers

End of over 6 (1 run) Zimbabwe 23/0 (RR: 3.83)
SB Styris 3-0-9-0
TN Madondo 5* (13b) ADR Campbell 18* (23b 3x4)

6.1 Franklin to Madondo, FOUR, quick rising ball, Madondo tries to
hook, it climbs too quickly on him, ends up getting a lucky back
edge flying over first slip and down to the boundary
6.2 Franklin to Madondo, no run, good length ball forces Madondo back
in his crease, watchfully stroking away forward of point, Harris
across to field to his right
6.3 Franklin to Madondo, no run, straight ball, stretches well forward,
playing back down the pitch, Franklin fields on his follow through
6.4 Franklin to Madondo, OUT: goes for a big shot over the top down the
ground, paying the price, it climbed too much on him, never had
the leverage on it, spoons it straight up to Twose who goes back a
couple of paces, taking an easy catch at mid off

       Stuart Carlisle the new batsman
6.5 Franklin to Carlisle, no run, shapes to defend a quick ball outside
off stump, holds the bat back out of the road late
6.6 Franklin to Carlisle, no run, lovely ball rising from a length,
Carlisle foolishly tries to force it through the covers from the
crease, plays and misses, it really did a lot from the deck,
rising and miving away from the right hander

into his crease, pushing back down the wicket to Franklin

9.4 Styris to Campbell, no run, well forward, firmly drives but
straight up to Astle at mid off
9.5 Styris to Campbell, FOUR, full ball outside off stump, clunk!
powerfully driven over the head of Astle leaping at mid off, just
unable to drag it back in - New Zealand needed the 6'7" Oram
        there, would've taken it easily!
9.6 Styris to Campbell, three runs, angling down the leg side, turns it
away past short fine leg, a poor misfield concedes an extra couple
of runs as it's pulled in just inside the boundary

10.4 Franklin to Campbell, FOUR, too short, sits up like a tennis ball
on leg stump, easily turned away with the pace through backward

and the first bowling change, it's debutant Jacob Oram on to bowl,
more noted as a batsman, but can send through a few handy overs on
occasion, very similar to McMillan in his role
12.1 Oram to Carlisle, one run, pushes through one quite quick and full
outside off stump, Carlisle immediately plays a big drive, getting

14.3 Oram to Carlisle, one run, jumps down the track, looking to break
up Oram's length, scoops it up in the air over midwicket, not

        from the deep midwicket boundary
that brings up Zimbabwe's 50 off 87 balls
14.4 Oram to Campbell, FOUR, short and wide outside off stump, cracking

Chris Harris on to bowl from the City End, replacing Styris after a
        tidy opening spell
Zimbabwe just 55/1 after the first 15 overs, compared with 92/2 at
Taupo, a much tighter bowling effort from the home side, but with
Harris conceding 41 off 5 overs at Taupo, we'll see how much
        longer that lasts
15.1 Harris to Campbell, no run, shortish ball on off stump, tapped down
        to point
15.2 Harris to Campbell, one run, low full toss, driven down to Styris

15.4 Harris to Carlisle, no run, angling down the leg side, straightens
on Carlisle, flicking the pad through to Parore, big appeal for

their good build up in the first half of the innings, meandering
through the last 25 overs at a pace that won't have satisfied them

Rennie played a fair hand at the end, along with Streak's useful

a big pull shot, gets a huge top edge as it hurries on to him,
flies a long way over Madondo's head running back at short fine
leg, just pitching inside the boundary rope
39.4 Mackay to Styris, SIX, too full and punished, sent sailing back
over the head of long on, Styris has come in and done the job as
pinch-hitter, the run rate required is slipping down at an
        alarming rate
Zimbabwe's faint hopes are becoming fainter and fainter
39.5 Mackay to Styris, two runs, forward, runs it away deftly backward
of point, well placed to get back for the second as Strang has a
bit to chase around from third man
39.6 Mackay to Styris, one run, full ball on the legs, turned out to
Whittall at deep square leg, a highly useful 15 run over

        to Whittall at wide midwicket
40.4 Murphy to Astle, no run, goes for a big shot straight back down the
ground, plays and misses, Flower quickly whips off the bails, and
belatedly umpire Dunne calls for the replay - the scoreboard
lights flash green a bit prematurely! but he's still shown to be
        officially no
not out by the real third umpire
40.5 Murphy to Astle, no run, cut down straight to backward point
40.6 Murphy to Astle, one run, laps it fine down the leg side, appeal

Guy Whittall returns to the bowling crease, Streak looking for a
miracle now to extract a win from this one now
41.1 Whittall to Astle, one run, firmly driven through extra cover, easy
run with the shot at Marillier fields from wide mid off
41.2 Whittall to Styris, SIX, full ball, Styris with a mighty heave,
drags it hard and high over wide midwicket, we may be in for a
slightly early finish at this rate
that brings up Styris' highest score in ODIs in style, beating the
43 he made against India at Hyderabad in 1999/00

        to Murphy at point

good diving stop by Streak to his right at extra cover prevents a
        run
42.4 Murphy to Styris, OUT: shortish ball on off stump, turns away a
little, looking to cut but drags it back on to his stumps, there
ends a fine cameo from Styris

43.1 Whittall to Fleming, one run, full outside off stump, driven firmly
up towards Carlisle at extra cover, Astle looking for a run but

hard into the ground, straight to Murphy at point
43.4 Whittall to Astle, FOUR, too full outside off stump, carved in the
air over extra cover, too well struck for Rennie at deep cover to
get across to, good clean blow
43.5 Whittall to Astle, FOUR, and he does it again! this one isn't all
that full, but Astle confidently belts it on the up, a bit
straighter, and well clear of the infield
43.6 Whittall to Astle, FOUR, short and wide, this time back cuts
through backward point, three in a row, Strang can't reach it from
        third man

still mathematically possible for Astle to get his 100 now, but
would need to score all the next 11 runs, and then hit a six for
the win with the scores level - a reasonably tall ask!
Bryan Strang returns to the bowling crease
44.1 Strang to Fleming, FOUR, what a shocker! loopy full toss outside
off stump, smacked over extra cover, Zimbabwe completely off their
game with ball and in the field now
that ruins any remote hopes for Astle's 9th ODI ton!

Marillier gets a bowl from the City End, replacing Whittall
45.1 Marillier to Astle, no run, what an awful opening ball! takes Astle
completely by surprise, loopy full toss, can only manage to slap
it into the pitch back to the bowler
45.2 Marillier to Astle, FOUR, overtossed outside off stump, carved away
through the covers to the boundary, and New Zealand complete a
confident win by 8 wickets with 28 balls to spare
the National Bank One-Day International Series is squared at 1-1
going into the deciding match at Eden Park in Auckland, starting
at 10:30am on Saturday the 7th, it should be a good tussle as the
New Zealanders have suddenly started to find a bit of form
Astle was the sheet anchor, facing far fewer deliveries than his
partners at the other end, while Sinclair and Styris scored freely
        at the other end
a breakthrough innings for Sinclair in ODIs, after struggling so
much in four previous innings at this level, and his place must've
been under close scrutiny with Chris Nevin a bit contrversially
        left out for him
the injection of Styris did the trick, ensuring that the rare fine
start by the New Zealand openers prevented things slipping away,
dragging the run rate required down from around five and a half to
        closer to four per over
until Auckland, it's goodbye from CricInfo at the WestpacTrust
Stadium in Wellington - the first match to be completed here
without a rain interruption and the lights in full flow!
