5th ODI: New Zealand v Sri Lanka at Christchurch, 11 Feb 2001

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match scheduled to start at 10:30am local time (2130 GMT)

welcome to Jade Stadium in Christchurch for the fifth and final
National Bank Series One-Day International between New Zealand and
        Sri Lanka
it's a fairly fine day, with a thin light cloud cover across the
whole sky, but otherwise it's quite bright and clear, and it's
unlikely we'll have (m)any interruptions today, at worst one would
        suspect a passing shower later
the pitch looks in good nick, with just a light, even covering of
grass, but it's not green grass, so it shouldn't do anything
alarming and the bounce and carry should be very consistent
the outfield looks a picture, today's mowed pattern being a
psychedelic swirl from the centre, should be pretty darn quick
Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya has won the toss yet again,
and elected to bowl first again, backing his chasing side to do it
four times in a row in an attempt to win the series 5-0
Sri Lanka have made just the one change, with poor Romesh
Kaluwitharana back out of the side again after his single innings
of 34 from 31 balls at Hamilton, in favour of rested opener Marvan
        Atapattu
Avishka Gunawardene will again play as specialist 12th man
New Zealand have made two changes, with Craig Spearman recalled to
take the place of Nathan Astle at the last minute, who is
suffering from food poisoning, and James Franklin returns,
replacing Chris Martin who will be 12th man
it'll be Nuwan Zoysa to bowl from the Port Hills End, to Adam
Parore, with Craig Spearman at the non-striker's end
two slips, third man, point, cover, mid off, mid on, midwicket and
long leg in place for the left arm over the wicket bowler to the
        right handed Parore
0.1 Zoysa to Parore, FOUR, angling down the leg side, New Zealand off
to a cracking start as Parore glances it very nicely fine, too
fine for Gallage at fine leg, and gets his first runs as an opener
        for New Zealand
0.2 Zoysa to Parore, no run, forward, defends firmly straight up to
        Jayasuriya at mid off
0.3 Zoysa to Parore, one run, forward, drifts slightly into the legs,
drops it down quietly in close on the leg side, well taken quick
single as Dharmasena's too slow in to it from midwicket
0.4 Zoysa to Spearman, no run, beaten! good lifting ball seaming past
the outside edge straight through to the keeper, Spearman keeps
the blade just inside the line
0.5 Zoysa to Spearman, one run, forward, guides it off the face down
        towards third man
0.6 Zoysa to Parore, one run, and more down to third man, run down off
the face to Fernando at third man

End of over 1 (7 runs) New Zealand 7/0 (RR: 7.00)

Indika Gallage to open up from the Hadlee Stand End
two slips, wide third man, point, cover, wide mid off, mid on,
forward square leg and long leg in place for the right handed
Parore facing the right arm over the wicket Gallage
1.1 Gallage to Parore, one run, full and straight, driven straight up
on the leg side of the pitch, time for a comfortable quick single
as Fernando's a bit wide at mid on
1.2 Gallage to Spearman, no run, full on off stump, well forward and
driving firmly straight up to Jayasuriya at wide mid off
1.3 Gallage to Spearman, no run, angling on leg stump, tucked nicely
off the hip but can't get it past a good diving save by de Silva
to his right at forward square leg
1.4 Gallage to Spearman, no run, forward, defends a straight ball back
down the pitch on the off side
1.5 Gallage to Spearman, two runs, full outside off stump, Spearman
into a trademark strong lofted on drive, but chips it a bit too
much, as it pitches in the outfield and pulls up just inside the
boundary, only two as he didn't run them hard
1.6 Gallage to Spearman, no run, oooh! good quicker ball comes through
on him, only just defends with bat/pad from the crease and it
drops down at his toes, lucky it doesn't roll back towards his
        stumps, unconvincing

End of over 2 (3 runs) New Zealand 10/0 (RR: 5.00)
IS Gallage 1-0-3-0 - Hadlee Stand End
AC Parore 7* (5b 1x4) CM Spearman 3* (7b)

2.1 Zoysa to Parore, no run, drives and misses from the crease, never
to it with the feet, playing well inside the line as it slanted
        across him
2.2 Zoysa to Parore, no run, and another, this one moves further and
wider outside off stump, Parore again pushing at it inside the
        line
2.3 Zoysa to Parore, one run, and again! but this time he manages to
run a thick edge wide of the slips down to Fernando at third man
2.4 Zoysa to Spearman, no run, tight ball on off stump, defends away
        straight to Muralitharan at point
2.5 Zoysa to Spearman, two runs, shortish ball, tucked off the hip in
the air through the gap at midwicket, Jayasuriya gives chase from
mid on as it doesn't travel quickly
2.6 Zoysa to Spearman, legbye: FOUR, full down the leg side, tries to
swing it over square leg but misses, but will gladly accept the
four leg byes that come from the fine deflection off the pad just
wide of the keeper, Gallage struggles around from long leg but
        can't stop it

3.1 Gallage to Parore, no run, full outside off stump, driven firmly
straight up to Jayasuriya at mid off
3.2 Gallage to Parore, no run, short ball angling down the leg side,
Parore tries to whip it away but can't catch up with it, lucky not
to be called wide by umpire Quested
3.3 Gallage to Parore, one run, angling down the leg side, turned away
        nicely down to long leg
3.4 Gallage to Spearman, no run, tight ball on middle and leg, forced
up towards mid off from the crease, Arnold intercepts from short
        cover
3.5 Gallage to Spearman, no run, half forward in defence, Gallage gets
one to seam sharply back in, taking him just above the knee roll,
big appeal mostly fuelled by the bowler, but just turned down by
umpire Quested, not a bad shout
3.6 Gallage to Spearman, OUT: Spearman doesn't make the most of his
good fortune, trying to smash one over the top on the up, but gets
far too far underneath it, goes a long, long way up in the air,
Jayasuriya goes back, to take a fine catch

AC Parore 9* (11b 1x4)

a very solid catch from Jayasuriya, running back and across from
mid off towards extra cover on the circle edge, kept his cool and
bucketed it cleanly, tosses in the air in front of the section of
Sri Lankan fans in the crowd in celebration
Spearman's stop-gap role as last minute replacement for Astle is
        short-lived

length ball, played straight up towards Jayasuriya at wide mid on
4.1 Zoysa to Fleming, no run, good tight ball on off stump, defends
away towards cover point where de Silva hovers across to field
4.2 Zoysa to Fleming, one run, angling on leg stump, well helped on its
way down to Fernando at long leg to get off the mark
4.3 Zoysa to Parore, no run, short ball angling quite wide and further
away outside off stump, left well alone by Parore
4.4 Zoysa to Parore, one run, tight ball on off stump, Parore tried to
guide it away off the face but it seamed back and clipped the
front pad first before dropping off the bat towards vacant short
        third man, quick single taken
direct hit at the keeper's end but Fleming slides safely home well
        in time
4.5 Zoysa to Fleming, no run, dropped! good tight ball on off stump,
Fleming tries to drive strongly down the ground but just picks up
low in the air back down the pitch, Zoysa thrusts out a hand but
can't hold on to it cleanly, dropping it out back towards the
        stumps at his end
4.6 Zoysa to Fleming, no run, good nut! quick rising ball from a
perfect length, Fleming is left to grope well inside the line as
it seams away from the outside edge

prevent them thinking of a quick single
5.3 Gallage to Parore, no run, charges down the track and plays a
powerful cover drive, but Arnold saves a certain four by stopping
it well at short cover as it played almost directly at him
5.4 Gallage to Parore, no run, angling on leg stump, whipped off the
legs straight down to de Silva at square leg
5.5 Gallage to Parore, no run, good tight ball on off stump, defends
        down towards point
5.6 Gallage to Parore, one run, quicker ball on middle and leg, Parore

punished, slashing cut down through backward point, too good for
Fernando running around from wide third man
6.3 Zoysa to Parore, (noball) no run, quick rising ball from a back of
a length, Parore has to sway right back out of the way as it zings

drops it down into the pitch with the bat presented in front of
        the pad on off stump
7.6 Gallage to Parore, no run, charges down the pitch again, but this

16.2 Fernando to Fleming, one run, shortish ball on off stump, is a bit
hurried on as he tries to pull it through vacant midwicket, drops

midwicket for a quick run, Jayasuriya up to field quickly from mid

16.3 Fernando to Parore, one run, super quick rising ball outside off
stump, Parore jumps right up to play at it and ends up being
struck under the armpit, Fleming sharply calls him through for a
very tight single, Parore is slow to start and scrambles to the
        bowler's end, the throw
from Arnold just misses, otherwise he was long gone, as it was
fired from just forward of point
16.4 Fernando to Fleming, FOUR, driving at a full ball outside off
stump, gets a thick edge through the vacant slips, racing down to
the boundary, no chance for Gallage at third man, though non-
selected player Ruchira Perera fields it at the player's area
        behind the rope, and almost

New Zealand end up with a fine 282/6 from their 50 overs, which
they were always heading towards in the early stages, but after a
bit of a stumble towards the 40 over mark, that was in jeopardy
but Harris and Vincent saw them all the way through thereafter
the top scorer, Oram, only made 59, but handy contributions right
through the order is what saw them to the strong total, with a
        quick 50 from Harris, a steady 49 from Parore, a free-flowing 40
from Fleming and a handy cameo of 31 not out from Vincent
the bowlers were pretty uniformly taken to in a fairly consummate
performance by the New Zealand batting order at last this series,
though Muralitharan came back well after his early pasting from
        Oram
Sri Lanka face their sternest test of the series, one which will
prove them truly worthy of the clean sweep if they manage to
achieve it, and their chase for 283 runs at a required rate of

47.2 McMillan to Zoysa, one run, plays inside out, scooping it down the
ground to Oram on the second bounce at long off
47.3 McMillan to Arnold, wide: no run, a leg spinner from McMillan, but
ill-directed, down the leg side, and that brings up the 50
        partnership
47.3 McMillan to Arnold, OUT: tries to swing a full ball outside off
stump across the line over midwicket, but only succeeds in getting
a thick edge to fly high up towards Twose running back at backward
        point to take the catch

DNT Zoysa 31* (17b 3x4 1x6)

the non-traditional death bowler McMillan picks up two in a cheap
48th over, now suddenly it's 23 runs needed off the final 12 balls
Mutiah Muralitharan the new batsman, coming out with runner Russel
Arnold after straining his groin in the field earlier

Lanka's serious hopes of challenging for victory now, full ball
picked up strongly, but straight down the throat of Vettori at
        long on

DR Tuffey 10-1-51-2 (2nb) - Port Hills End
IS Gallage 2* (2b) M Muralitharan 4* (3b)

we're down to the final over of the series, Sri Lanka need 15 for a
clean sweep, New Zealand need to take a wicket or concede 13 runs
or fewer to salvage some lost pride
49.1 McMillan to Gallage, one run, full outside off stump, drags an
inside edge into the pad, drops down in close on the off side and
they grab a quick single easily as McMillan jogs up to field, 14
        to win off 5 balls
49.2 McMillan to Muralitharan, OUT: McMillan finishes it off, a yorker

Sri Lanka 269/10, Partnership of 6
       M Muralitharan b McMillan 4 (4b 0x4 0x6)
       IS Gallage 3* (3b) CD McMillan 8.2-0-44-3 (2w)

McMillan stands mid-pitch and pumps his arms in the air delight,
finishing with 3 wickets in his final 6 balls to clean up the
tail, New Zealand running out victorious by 13 runs with 4 balls
        left unbowled
a consolation victory in every sense of the term, but one which
must give the home side some heart after a horrid run since the
ICC KnockOut triumph, as they head into a 5-match series against
the more formidable Pakistan next week
this win averts the possibility of losing their 12th game of their
last 13, while it also breaks Sri Lanka's mini-run of five wins on
the trot, starting with their own consolation win in the last game
of a 5-match series, in South Africa
Atapattu, Jayawardene, Arnold, Dharmasena and Zoysa all looked at
various stages of the innings capable of seeing Sri Lanka through
to a fantastic victory, after slumping to 21/3 in the 7th over
the wickets were well spread around, with Franklin and McMillan
snaring three apiece, and backed up by a solid Tuffey performance
at both ends of the innings
but despite all this, it takes very little away from Sri Lanka's
dominance of the series, wrapping it up 4-1, and they probably
won't dwell on missing out on a golden chance for a clean sweep,
with the big ticket England series back at home to think about
Time for the presentations, with firstly New Zealand Cricket chief
executive Christopher Doig coming forward to say a few words, in
particular congratulating the Sri Lankans for their fine
performance in the brief series on these shores, wishing them well
for their next assignment - England at home, and all the best for
Muralitharan's recovery from the groin injury
New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is invited up to say a few
words also, and congratulates the Sri Lankans as well, but is
heartened by his young team's performance today in difficult
        circumstances this season
Jacob Oram is announced as man of the match for his fine 59,
including four magnificent sixes, and a brilliant direct hit run
out from the deep of match top scorer Marvan Atapattu
and finally, Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya comes forward to
receive the National Bank One-Day International Series trophy, and
thanks the crowd, and their opposition for the competition, and
        that concludes the presentations
from here Sri Lanka return home to face England in a Test series
starting in 11 days, while New Zealand's next assignment is the
National Bank One-Day International Series against Pakistan, both
covered live and in full, ball-by-ball on CricInfo.com
the first of these New Zealand matches is a day/night affair at
Eden Park in Auckland, starting at 2pm local time (0100 GMT) on
Saturday the 17th, but until then it's goodbye from CricInfo at
Jade Stadium in Christchurch on a lovely Sunday afternoon
