2nd ODI: New Zealand v Sri Lanka at Wellington (WTS), 3 Feb 2001

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match scheduled to start at 2pm local time (0100 GMT)

welcome to WestpacTrust Stadium in Wellington for the second
National Bank Series One-Day International between New Zealand and
        Sri Lanka
it's a magnificent day here in Wellington, only a smattering a
light cloud in the far blue yonder, otherwise it's perfect cricket
playing and watching conditions, with a nice cooling breeze to
        keep things from overheating
the pitch conditions are fair, may not be lightning fast but should
be good for a 230+ score, with a pretty trim looking outfield
the crowd is quite disappointing at this stage, with pre-sales not
high at all, not aided by the home team's performance in the first
match at Napier, but there were plenty of people streaming up to
the ground in the half hour before the start, so a
New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has won the toss and elected to
bat first, with the home team naming just one change - Jacob Oram
back in for the wayward Andrew Penn who is demoted to 12th man
duties, while Sri Lanka have stuck with their winning XI
it'll be Mathew Sinclair to face Nuwan Zoysa to bowl from the
Harbour End, with Nathan Astle at the non-striker's end
0.1 Zoysa to Sinclair, two runs, immediately underway, tucking a
shortish ball angling in on leg stump down backward of square leg
for a comfortable two as long leg has a fair run in to field
0.2 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, tighter straight ball on a back of a
length, defends down from the crease towards cover point
0.3 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, shortish ball outside off stump, defends
down backward of point, Atapattu across to his left to field from
        squarer
0.4 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, stretches well forward, shapes to play
but quickly raises the bat high out of the way to let one through
to the keeper outside off stump
0.5 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, well forward, shoulders arms outside off
        stump once more
0.6 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, stretches well forward once more,
shoulders arms to a shortish rising ball outside off stump

End of over 1 (2 runs) New Zealand 2/0 (RR: 2.00)
DNT Zoysa 1-0-2-0 - Harbour End
NJ Astle 0* (0b) MS Sinclair 2* (6b)

Eric Upashantha to open the bowling from the City End
1.1 Upashantha to Astle, one run, shortish ball outside off stump,
Astle back in towards it, nudging away down backward of point for
a quick single with the shot, underway immediately also as
Atapattu fields to his left and has a throw at the keeper's end
        for the sake of it
1.2 Upashantha to Sinclair, no run, beaten! lovely delivery climbing
off a length, Sinclair pokes forward in defence but it slides up
past the outside edge, lovely stuff from Upashantha
1.3 Upashantha to Sinclair, two runs, overpitched and angling down the
leg side, Sinclair gets one back, clipping away firmly through
backward square leg, Zoysa around from long leg to field
1.4 Upashantha to Sinclair, no run, a better short rising ball outside
off stump, Sinclair shapes to fend forward at it but just holds it
back at the last moment, not quite pushing to the line of the ball
        to gain the edge
1.5 Upashantha to Sinclair, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
strongly cracked on the up from the crease up to Jayasuriya at mid
        off on the bounce
1.6 Upashantha to Sinclair, wide: no run, short ball angling wide down
the leg side, Sinclair tries to whip it away but it's too wide
1.6 Upashantha to Sinclair, no run, full and straight outside off
stump, firmly driven straight back down the pitch to Upashantha
        fielding on his follow through

End of over 2 (4 runs) New Zealand 6/0 (RR: 3.00)
KEA Upashantha 1-0-4-0 (1w) - City End
NJ Astle 1* (1b) MS Sinclair 4* (11b)

2.1 Zoysa to Astle, no run, quick shortish straight ball tucks Astle up
nicely, trying to work it down to leg but hurried on for pace,
taken high on the body and drops down dead in close on the leg
        side of the pitch
2.2 Zoysa to Astle, no run, stretches well forward, defending compactly
with bat/pad up towards Jayasuriya at mid off
2.3 Zoysa to Astle, no run, shortish ball angling in on middle and leg,
drops it down to Dharmasena fielding at forward square leg
2.4 Zoysa to Astle, no run, shortish ball, hops back on the crease,
defending down towards midwicket where Dharmasena's across to
        field again
2.5 Zoysa to Astle, no run, shortish ball, tucked up by a rising ball,
drops it down dead in close on the leg side
2.6 Zoysa to Astle, two runs, full outside off stump, strongly driven
through the gap at extra cover, the outfield isn't quite as
conducive to the fast ball rolling along it as expected early, and
is well overhauled inside the rope

End of over 3 (2 runs) New Zealand 8/0 (RR: 2.67)
DNT Zoysa 2-0-4-0 - Harbour End
MS Sinclair 4* (11b) NJ Astle 3* (7b)

3.1 Upashantha to Sinclair, FOUR, shortish ball outside off stump,
powerfully square driven but streakily in the air through point,
quite safely though as Atapattu is fielding backward of square
Arnold comes in to field at short cover point as a result of the
        previous stroke
3.2 Upashantha to Sinclair, no run, much tighter ball on off stump with
no width, respectfully defended into the pitch back towards the
        bowler
3.3 Upashantha to Sinclair, two runs, shortish ball angling in on his
hips, well tucked away down through vacant square leg, Dharmasena
        gives chase from midwicket
3.4 Upashantha to Sinclair, one run, full outside off stump, firmly
driven up towards Jayasuriya at wide mid off, easy quick run taken
with the shot as the Sri Lankan captain fumbles it behind him
        trying to pick up
3.5 Upashantha to Astle, legbye: one run, shortish ball angling down
the leg side, tries to pull it away but settles for it dropping
down to vacant backward square leg from the thigh pad for a single
        instead
3.6 Upashantha to Sinclair, no run, forward, shoulders arms outside off
        stump through to the keeper

End of over 4 (8 runs) New Zealand 16/0 (RR: 4.00)
KEA Upashantha 2-0-11-0 (1w) - City End
NJ Astle 3* (8b) MS Sinclair 11* (16b 1x4)

4.1 Zoysa to Astle, FOUR, cracking blow! just back of a length outside
off stump, Astle carves it away through vacant cover on the up,
        imperiously driven from the crease
4.2 Zoysa to Astle, no run, comes forward into a shortish straight ball
that tickles him up as he closes the face and gets an inside edge
into the body, near the 'delicate region', a bit tender for a
couple of moments before he recomposes himself
4.3 Zoysa to Astle, no run, shoulders arms to a short rising ball
        outside off stump
4.4 Zoysa to Astle, no run, stretches well forward with bat/pad in firm
defence up towards Jayasuriya at mid off
a hold up in play for a few moments as the Sri Lankans want to have
the shape of the ball checked out, a quick inspection is done and
the umpires are satisfied it hasn't warped just yet
4.5 Zoysa to Astle, no run, shoulders arms to a rising ball outside off
        stump
4.6 Zoysa to Astle, one run, shortish ball on middle and leg, pulled on
one leg around the corner down to Upashantha at deep backward
        square leg

End of over 5 (5 runs) New Zealand 21/0 (RR: 4.20)
DNT Zoysa 3-0-9-0 - Harbour End
NJ Astle 8* (14b 1x4) MS Sinclair 11* (16b 1x4)

5.1 Upashantha to Astle, FOUR, shortish ball sits up outside off stump,
an open invitation for Astle who gladly takes it, slapping it down
through the narrow gap at point, the crowd urging the ball on to
the rope and it duly beats Atapattu in the rase
5.2 Upashantha to Astle, no run, widish short ball outside off stump,
left well alone by Astle through to the keeper
5.3 Upashantha to Astle, no run, drawn well forward in defence by a
good full ball outside off stump, pushes straight up to Jayasuriya
        at mid off
5.4 Upashantha to Astle, wide: no run, stretches well forward in
leaving alone a wider delivery than the one two balls prior, this
time requiring umpire Quested to penalise Upashantha
5.4 Upashantha to Astle, no run, Astle pushes tentatively forward in
defence, just withdrawing the bat back as he looked to defend,
could've spelt danger otherwise as it just slid past the shoulder
of the bat through to Sangakkara
5.5 Upashantha to Astle, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump, don't
bowl there to Astle if you want to maintain tidy figures, smacked
away through extra cover, a collection job
5.6 Upashantha to Astle, no run, shortish ball reasonably wide outside
off stump, left well alone by Astle who's happy to take the 9 runs
        from that over

End of over 6 (9 runs) New Zealand 30/0 (RR: 5.00)

6.1 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, forward, shoulders arms outside off
stump to a reasonably full ball
6.2 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, shortish straight ball, turned on the
crease to play it down defensively to Dharmasena at forward square
        leg
6.3 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, shortish rising ball on off stump,
Sinclair does well to get over the top of it, forcing down into
the ground, Arnold fielding sharply to his right on the bounce at
        short cover point
6.4 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, back of a length ball on off stump,
defends down towards backward point, Arnold swoops across to field
        once more
6.5 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, quicker short rising ball outside off
stump, Sinclair spies the extra width and tries to slash it away
through the covers off the back foot, but the angle across him
from the left hander and the height get too much from him, playing
        and missing
6.6 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, much fuller outside off stump, firmly
        driven straight to extra cover

End of over 7 (maiden) New Zealand 30/0 (RR: 4.29)

Zoysa completes the first maiden of the innings
7.1 Upashantha to Astle, no run, full ball angling down the leg side,
tries to whip it away but taken on the pad, rolls through to the
        keeper
7.2 Upashantha to Astle, wide: no run, short rising ball but well down
the leg side, wided for the third time already today
Upashantha not quite finding it as much fun as at Napier where he
snared four top order batsmen in a fine burst
7.2 Upashantha to Astle, no run, full outside off stump, powerfully
driven straight back down the pitch, Upashantha fields very
sharply to grab it on his follow through to his right
7.3 Upashantha to Astle, no run, stretches well forward, shouldering
        arms outside off stump
7.4 Upashantha to Astle, one run, driving at a good length ball outside
off stump, gets a thick edge that flies fast to the right of
Jayawardene at slip, gets two hands to it but can't hold it
cleanly, dropping it away behind him and they grab the single
a half let off for Astle, it was a chance, but a tough one,
Jayawardene did well to dive as quickly to it as he did
7.5 Upashantha to Sinclair, one run, full and a bit straight, driven up
towards wide midwicket for an easy single with the shot
7.6 Upashantha to Astle, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
shapes to play but thinks better of it, lifting the bat back and
clear as it passes through to the keeper

8.1 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, walks forward into a defensive guiding
shot to a full ball outside off stump, steered away towards
Atapattu at backward point, looking for the single but Sinclair
says no to Astle before there's a mix-up
8.2 Zoysa to Sinclair, one run, shortish ball on leg stump, hops on the
crease to turn it away down to Upashantha at long leg
8.3 Zoysa to Astle, no run, forced back on the crease looking to come
forward to a shortish ball, defends it straight down to Arnold at
        short cover point
8.4 Zoysa to Astle, OUT: amazing! short climbing ball outside off
stump, Astle rocks back to pull but it hurries on a bit much,
mistiming it somewhat, lobbing up towards mid on, de Silva almost
misjudges it trying to line it up but leaps up and back and plucks

ground from mid air and does well to control the ball as he hit the
deck, his team-mates race over to congratulate him and make sure
he's OK at the same time!
New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming the new batsman
8.5 Zoysa to Fleming, no run, stretches well forward to a full ball
outside off stump with the bat raised high, no intention to play
that one, half-hearted appeal from the bowler for the sake of it
8.6 Zoysa to Fleming, no run, shortish ball on leg stump, hops on the
crease to defend down towards square leg

9.1 Upashantha to Sinclair, (noball) no run, oversteps, full ball on
off stump, firmly driven straight up to Jayasuriya at mid off
9.1 Upashantha to Sinclair, no run, leaves alone a fairly wide full
        ball outside off stump
9.2 Upashantha to Sinclair, no run, full ball on the legs, strongly
clipped away forward of square leg but can't get it past a good
diving save by Dharmasena from midwicket, both batsmen hovering
out of their creases looking for the run before they have to stay
        at home
9.3 Upashantha to Sinclair, FOUR, slower ball outside off stump,
Sinclair picks it and plays a consumate drive through extra cover
with lovely timing which beats the attempts of the outfield to
slow it up and Jayasuriya chasing it
9.4 Upashantha to Sinclair, two runs, overpitched on the legs this
time, turned into a low full toss and worked out through vacant
wide midwicket for Fernando and Dharmasena to chase
9.5 Upashantha to Sinclair, no run, full ball on the toes, firmly
clipped along the ground straight to Dharmasena at midwicket
9.6 Upashantha to Sinclair, no run, well forward, defends down to

off stump, Zoysa gets one to slide on through, taking the outside
edge straight to the keeper and off the captain goes

Fleming's not having a very enjoyable series so far, a second-ball
duck at Napier and now a third-ball duck to go with it
a huge cheer for local favourite Roger Twose, as per usual, walking
to the crease to the distinct tune of the Braveheart movie theme
Zoysa's quick double strike sets the home team back on their heels
once more, simply umable to gather sufficient periods of momentum
to sling themselves towards a likely big total
10.2 Zoysa to Twose, no run, shoulders arms to a shortish ball outside
        off stump
10.3 Zoysa to Twose, no run, full ball on off stump, stretches well
forward to firmly defend with bat/pad up towards Muralitharan
coming in to field from extra cover

raises the bat up out of the way as it passes through outside off
        stump
10.5 Zoysa to Twose, no run, shortish rising ball outside off stump,
left well alone through to the keeper once again
10.6 Zoysa to Twose, no run, props well forward in defence, dead batting
it down in close on the off side of the pitch

Sri Lanka bring Mutiah Muralitharan into the bowling attack early,
he'll bowl the 12th over of the innings from the City End,
replacing Upashantha after 5 expensive overs
11.1 Muralitharan to Sinclair, no run, flighted up full, Sinclair stabs
forward to defend, turning into the front pad and dropping down in
close on the leg side, half shout from the keeper alone
11.2 Muralitharan to Sinclair, no run, flighted up very full, Sinclair
comes well forward to clamp down on the spin, defending to
Jayawardene under the helmet at silly mid off
11.3 Muralitharan to Sinclair, no run, flighted full outside off stump,
Sinclair lunges after it, playing a confident square drive
straight to de Silva at backward point
11.4 Muralitharan to Sinclair, no run, well forward to one turning in
from well outside off stump, fair appeal for lbw quickly turned
down as it strikes in line but doing too much
11.5 Muralitharan to Sinclair, no run, flighted up on middle and leg,
turned away to Dharmasena at midwicket
11.6 Muralitharan to Sinclair, no run, reaches well forward in defence
outside off stump, pushing away towards point, looking for a
single but quickly being denied by de Silva scooting to his right
        to field

consecutive maidens see the New Zealand run rate plummet as the
breaks are well and truly applied thanks to the two quick Zoysa
        wickets
12.1 Zoysa to Twose, no run, stretches well forward, shouldering arms
        outside off stump
12.2 Zoysa to Twose, no run, good quick rising ball outside off stump,
Twose half looks to play at it before quickly raising the bat well
out of the way to let it pass through unchallenged
12.3 Zoysa to Twose, FOUR, short rising ball, Twose climbs into it,
pulling hard and high over wide midwicket to get underway with
style, pitches in the outfield before rolling over the rope to
        just beat two chasers
that breaks the shackles a little, with that being the first runs
        for 17 balls
12.4 Zoysa to Twose, no run, shortish straight ball, hops back in the
crease to defend respectfully back down the pitch
12.5 Zoysa to Twose, one run, full ball worked up towards widish mid on,
quick single taken with the shot, the crowd panic a little as they
think Twose is struggling to make his ground at the bowler's end
as the shy comes in, but he was well home and it misses in any
        case
12.6 Zoysa to Sinclair, no run, good shortish straight ball forces

        side of the pitch

the crowd has built up rather well in the first hour's play, one
suspects many of the people streaming towards the ground as the
first ball was being bowled at 2pm in fact thought it was a 2:30pm
start, as has been in the tradition up until this year
13.1 Muralitharan to Twose, one run, stretches forward, nudging a
shortish ball away just backward of point, Sinclair calls him
through for a very sharp single and does it well as the throw
comes in, just wide of the mark, but hits Sinclair in a very
sensitive region of the body as he's
sprinting through, and he falls to the ground and gets up, hopping
all over the place to get over the intense pain before recovering
        sufficiently to bat on
13.2 Muralitharan to Sinclair, no run, reaches forward, guiding it away
straight to de Silva at backward point
13.3 Muralitharan to Sinclair, no run, flatter and fuller, Sinclair
comes forward to play on the leg side but is taken low down on the
pad, loud appeal but going down
13.4 Muralitharan to Sinclair, one run, strongly swept out through
midwicket, a fielder has been placed in the deep for it, a little
straighter but gets the throw in quickly enough to prevent the
        second being attempted
13.5 Muralitharan to Twose, no run, coming around the wicket to the
left-hander, watchfully reaches forward, defending back down the
        pitch
13.6 Muralitharan to Twose, no run, reaches well forward, defending down

forward of square leg but can't get it past Arnold stopping well
low down to his right at short forward square leg
14.2 Dharmasena to Sinclair, OUT: stretches well forward in defence,
Dharmasena slides one through quicker and gets a faint edge
straight through to Sangakkara who takes a good catch low down, a

48.1 Fernando to Oram, (noball) one run, oversteps, short pitched ball,

Jayasuriya brings Dharmasena in from long off to mid off, really
opening up the long off to extra cover region in the deep
48.1 Fernando to Parore, (noball) FOUR, oversteps again, strongly driven
up towards wide mid off, Dharmasena slides to his left and makes a
terrible hash of it, letting it go straight through him and all
the way to the boundary, the gamble by the captain doesn't pay off
48.1 Fernando to Parore, one run, shortish ball, swivels on the crease
trying to pull but only manages a bottom edge into the pad, drops

New Zealand end up with a very middle of the road total of 205,
possibly defendable in the conditions, which are reasonable with
the pitch, but the outfield is a little on the slow side despite a
        tidy trim
Twose's x-ray at the hospital has shown there is no fracture of the
thumb, but given he didn't return to bat, it's equally as unlikely
he'll be seen again in the field
New Zealand's innings was a bit stop-startish, with the opening
pair threatening to get them off to a cracker before falling in
quick succession with Fleming thrown in as a bonus
McMillan, Harris and Parore rebuilt the middle of the innings, when
too many times before they had gone for a big shot and got out
        cheaply
and while their contributions weren't massive today, they were
collectively very useful and gives the bowlers something to bowl
with, a total not dissimilar to what the managed to hold Sri Lanka
        to at Napier
Zoysa was the stand out for the visitors, bowling a very tight
opening spell and not being taken apart in his final two over
spell at the death, while Fernando again proved rather quick and a
handful at times but was all over the show with his front foot
       and lateral accuracy
the spinners shared 30 overs between them today, so we're likely to
see Vettori and Harris play a big part for New Zealand's hopes
through the middle portion of the chase
with the New Zealand innings running 26 minutes overtime, thanks to
various stoppages for sightscreen moves and Twose's injury, so Sri
Lanka are very unlikely to be docked any overs
it means play will resume in just over 10 minutes time at 6:15pm

41.5 Harris to Dharmasena, one run, short ball sits up to be pulled, out
        to Martin at deep midwicket
41.6 Harris to Arnold, one run, props forward in defence, quietly
dropping it down in close on the off side, well played for the
quick single as the only player who's close enough to it is Parore
        from behind the stumps

End of over 42 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 158/5 (RR: 3.76 RRR: 48/7 = 6.86)

RP Arnold 42* (67b 2x4) HDPK Dharmasena 4* (9b)

Harris and Vettori finish their 10 over spells in tandem, so a
double bowling change will be required as we head into the final 7
overs, with 48 needed for victory
interestingly, it's McMillan Fleming turns to, while Martin,
Franklin and Oram each have 4, 4 and 5 overs respectively at their
disposal, a bit of a gamble
42.1 McMillan to Arnold, no run, good full ball angling in on the toes,
can only manage to squeeze it away directly to Astle at wide
        midwicket
42.2 McMillan to Arnold, one run, similar delivery but worked much
straighter up the ground through mid on, they look for a possible
second but Oram's quickly in from the deep to prevent them going
        through with it
42.3 McMillan to Dharmasena, no run, McMillan getting his length right
so far, Dharmasena turns a very full ball away to Sinclair at wide
        midwicket
42.4 McMillan to Dharmasena, legbye: one run, quick and full, taken very
low down on the pad which draws a loud shout from the bowler,
quickly turned down by umpire Dunne, rebounds away towards
        midwicket for the quick run
42.5 McMillan to Arnold, one run, very full, worked away towards
midwicket, a very tight single is taken as Astle fires from wide
midwicket, bouncing over and wide of the stumps, otherwise
        Dharmasena was in considerable trouble
this pair now starting to take on anything in the desperate hunt
        for runs
42.6 McMillan to Dharmasena, no run, McMillan rounds out a very good
over with another ball right on that same full length right at the
batsman, can only squeeze it out to Sinclair at wide midwicket

End of over 43 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 161/5 (RR: 3.74 RRR: 45/6 = 7.50)
CD McMillan 4-0-14-0 - Harbour End
RP Arnold 44* (70b 2x4) HDPK Dharmasena 4* (12b)

Franklin returns, replacing Harris at the City End
43.1 Franklin to Arnold, three runs, short rising ball outside off
stump, slashes it away in the air over vacant gully, Oram sprints
around from third man, sliding to field just inside the rope,
scoops it back towards Martin running around from deep backward
square, firing it in hard as
they take off for a very tight third, Dharmasena could've been in
real trouble had it been closer, but safely through, the replay is
called for to see if Oram touched the rope with ball in hand but
just given benefit of the doubt
43.2 Franklin to Dharmasena, no run, full ball on the toes worked away
towards midwicket, quick single taken off, very, very tight,
taking on Fleming who picks up and shies at the bowler's end, hits
direct and the diving Dharmasena is in big trouble, umpire Quested
        plays it safe and calls
for the replay, but he's found miles short and receives the red
        light

Sri Lanka 164/6, Partnership of 19
       HDPK Dharmasena run out (Fleming) 4 (13b 0x4 0x6)

Eric Upashantha the new batsman, at the non-striker's end
43.3 Franklin to Arnold, one run, full outside off stump, driven out to
        Martin at deep cover point
43.4 Franklin to Upashantha, one run, low full toss angling down the leg
side, turned away out through backward square leg, Martin sprints
around in the deep to fire it back in, preventing thoughts of the
        second, most wanted by Upashantha
43.5 Franklin to Arnold, one run, full on the toes, driven straight up
        to Penn at long on
Fleming has a long chat with his bowler for the final delivery of
the over, the field is wide spread for Upashantha on strike
43.6 Franklin to Upashantha, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump,
can only guide it straight down to Harris at backward point

End of over 44 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 167/6 (RR: 3.80 RRR: 39/5 = 7.80)
JEC Franklin 7-1-24-0 (1nb) - City End
RP Arnold 49* (73b 2x4) KEA Upashantha 1* (2b)

39 needed from the final 30 balls, 4 wickets in hand, we've got a
right royal finish on our hands
Anold holds the trump card for Sri Lanka, get his wicket and New
Zealand have the winning of the game at their feet
44.1 McMillan to Arnold, one run, angling down the leg side, glanced
firmly straight to Fleming at short fine leg, quick single taken
with the shot, Fleming throws and misses at the keeper's end, and
that's Arnold's second consecutive 50 in the series, off 74 balls,
        2x4
44.2 McMillan to Upashantha, one run, full outside off stump, driven
down to Oram at long off
44.3 McMillan to Arnold, two runs, full outside off stump, strongly
driven from the crease out through extra cover, well worked for a
couple as Franklin has to field from around at deep cover
44.4 McMillan to Arnold, two runs, angling in to the batsman, streakily
manages to drag one away wide of Fleming at short fine leg who
        must give chase
the batsmen ask the umpires for an inspection of the ball which has
become a bit discoloured with grass stains, an inspection is made
and they're satisfied is still good enough to continue with
44.5 McMillan to Arnold, one run, full outside off stump, strongly
driven down to Vettori at long off
44.6 McMillan to Upashantha, no run, quick and full on the feet, tries
to drive but misses, drops down from the pad in close square on
the off side, McMillan closes out another useful over

End of over 45 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 174/6 (RR: 3.87 RRR: 32/4 = 8.00)
CD McMillan 5-0-21-0 - Harbour End
RP Arnold 55* (77b 2x4) KEA Upashantha 2* (4b)

32 needed from 24 balls now, still the 4 wickets in hand, of which
Arnold's is becoming more and more the prized gem to try and steal
45.1 Franklin to Arnold, FOUR, and he proves exactly why, overpitched on
the legs and superbly picked up over wide midwicket, Penn has no
chance to get around to it from long on
drags the equation right back to 28 needed off 23 balls
45.2 Franklin to Arnold, two runs, another good clean hit, this time
straight back over the bowler's head, Penn around to field
successfully this time, but not before they take another handy two
45.3 Franklin to Arnold, one run, nudged away backward of point, quick
single taken, a shy at the bowler's end comes to nought, well wide
        and easily home
45.4 Franklin to Upashantha, legbye: one run, quick and full, trying to
work it to leg, misses, into the pad and rebounds away towards
midwicket, another very tight single taken as another throw at the
        stumps misses
45.5 Franklin to Arnold, FOUR, is this the defining moment in the game?
Arnold cleanly strikes it through wide midwicket again, Penn
around to field on the boundary, amazingly lets it go straight
between his legs to the rope, a terrible attempt that costs New
        Zealand 2 or 3 crucial
       runs
45.6 Franklin to Arnold, one run, driven straight down the ground on the
leg side, Penn charges in to field just outside the circle, and
gets a huge ironic cheer for fielding this one cleanly

End of over 46 (13 runs) Sri Lanka 187/6 (RR: 4.07 RRR: 19/3 = 6.33)

Arnold retains the strike, and the equation is suddenly down to a
far more manageable 19 off 18 to win
Fleming again gives McMillan the ball, very brave move with Chris
Martin not being used at the death, after having a successful
Shell Cup run bowling at the end
46.1 McMillan to Arnold, one run, full outside off stump, driven down to
Vettori at long off, 18 off 17 needed
46.2 McMillan to Upashantha, one run, dipping full toss, has a heave
across the line and doesn't time it at all well but gets it away
for a single to midwicket, Sinclair making a fine diving stop to
his right inside the circle, 17 off 16 needed
46.3 McMillan to Arnold, no run, very full and wide outside off stump,
clubbed into the covers but no further than Sinclair as he failed
to get hold of it strongly enough, 17 of 15 required
46.4 McMillan to Arnold, one run, neatly chipped back over the head of
the bowler, hesitant running sees them not try on the second run
as long off and long on charge in to field
46.5 McMillan to Upashantha, one run, full ball, swung away out through
midwicket with little power again, Arnold looks for the second but
Upashantha sends him back as Franklin sprints in to fire it back
        at the bowler's end
46.6 McMillan to Arnold, no run, tapped away towards point, Arnold
desperate for teh strike for the next over, Harris dives in from
behind point and hits direct from side on, Upashantha out by a
        country mile

End of over 47 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 191/6 (RR: 4.06 RRR: 15/2 = 7.50)

the replay is called for by umpire Quested just to be safe, and it
confirms what the crowd and everyone else suspected, Upashantha's
        on his way

Sri Lanka 191/7, Partnership of 27
       KEA Upashantha run out (Harris) 4 (7b 0x4 0x6)

Sri Lanka may have lost a wicket, but Arnold got what he was after,
the strike, and that's the vital part for the visitors
Nuwan Zoysa joins him at the non-striker's end
Martin returns, replacing Franklin at teh City End, coming on to
bowl just one over at the death, a big call
47.1 Martin to Arnold, one run, angling on the legs, worked away through
forward square leg, Franklin in from the deep to field, 14 off 11
        needed
the umpires come together for another ball inspection, and this
time it's judged to be sufficiently dirty for the box of balls to
be called for so a replacement can be selected
this just adds to the tension for the crowd of 13,133 who may be
witnessing a relatively low scoring encounter, but hasn't lacked
for a fair few moments of drama throughout the day, particularly
        the final 1 overs
47.2 Martin to Zoysa, two runs, slightly short of a length ball, well
picked up on the up, lofted over mid on, pitches it in the
outfield for a good two as Astle has to come in and field from
long off, 12 off 10 needed
47.3 Martin to Zoysa, one run, picks it up through mid on again, this
time struck a little harder, and Astle's more quickly in to it,
just the one run this time, 11 off 9 needed
47.4 Martin to Arnold, SIX, Arnold the Sri Lankan hero! low full toss,
superbly picked up, hard and high and sent sailing over midwicket,
and the hearts of 90% of the crowd sink, while the Sri Lankan army
nearby where the ball landed explode
that one shot could very well be the winning of the game, 5 needed
        off 8 now
47.5 Martin to Arnold, one run, full ball, driven back over the bowler's
head, they look for two but stay at home as Penn fires it in
        rapidly from the deep
       4 off 7 to win
47.6 Martin to Zoysa, two runs, full on the toes, driven up the ground
past the diving Sinclair at midwicket, Penn has a long way to come
in from long on to field and they take two tremendously well

End of over 48 (13 runs) Sri Lanka 204/7 (RR: 4.25 RRR: 2/1 = 2.00)
CS Martin 7-0-35-1 (1w 1nb) - City End

just two to win off the final over, for New Zealand they must ask -
where's Chris Pringle when they need him? the man who so famously
bowled a maiden 50th over to Bruce Reid at Hobart, exactly what's
        required right now
and it'll be Craig McMillan who has the rather difficult task of
emulating that feat, with all the field but Franklin at deep
        midwicket inside the circle
48.1 McMillan to Arnold, one run, full outside off stump, strongly
driven up to Vettori at mid off, quick run taken with the shot,
the throw at the bowler's end misses and Sri Lanka ensure
themselves of at least a tie!
Zoysa to face, 5 balls to find one run
48.2 McMillan to Zoysa, no run, very full ball on the toes, can only
squeeze it back down the pitch to the bowler, who threatens to
throw down teh stumps but holds on to it
48.3 McMillan to Zoysa, one run, down the track, picks it up nicely on
the up, lofting hard and high over long on, one bounce and over
the rope but Arnold sprinted through for the run before it reached
the boundary, so just one counts
Sri Lanka win by 3 wickets with 3 balls to spare, and take an
imposing 2-0 lead in the series
no question who the man of the match is, Russel Arnold has steered
them home from a tricky situation and done it with aplomb after
looking a little shaky early on in his innings
it's time for more soul searching for the New Zealanders, down 2-0
at home and needing to win three in a row to take the series,
whilst in the midst of a trot where they've lost 9 of their last
        10 ODIs
