1st ODI: New Zealand v Sri Lanka at Napier, 31 Jan 2001

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match scheduled to start at 2pm local time (0100 GMT)

welcome to McLean Park in Napier for the first National Bank Series
One-Day International between New Zealand and Sri Lanka
it's an overcast afternoon here in Napier with 32 minutes until the
first ball is bowled, the forecast is mixed with a fair chance of
showers later in the day which could disrupt play
with the new rules in place for ODIs played in New Zealand this
season, we can carry over play into the reserve day if necessary,
if play today is curtailed at a point before Duckworth/Lewis could
        decide the outcome
the pitch in use is brand new, adjacent to the slightly sluggish
one used for the first Shell Cup final a week ago today, which
wasn't quite a typical McLean Park track - hard, fast and plenty
of bounce and carry and quite batsman-friendly
Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya, resplendent in another
variation of the team pyjamas, has won the toss and elected to bat
        first
from the touring squad of 16 for Sri Lanka, Kaushalya Weeraratne
(injured, replaced by Indika Gallage who arrived this morning),
Romesh Kaluwitharana, Chaminda Vaas (still getting over a groin
injury) and Ruchira Perera have been left out of the 12 today
Avishka Gunawardene has been named 12th man, with Kumar Sangakkara
acting as keeper, Kalu's back-up, while New Zealand have left out
home provincial captain and hero Jacob Oram, after leading Central
Districts to Shell Cup victory over Canterbury three
days ago, though the winning team, including Oram and fellow Black
Cap Mathew Sinclair, will get to parade the Shell Cup around the
        ground during the interval
out on to the field come the players, with the Black Caps flanked
by 11 kids who are the 'shadow 11' as part of a new promotion for
all the One-Day Internationals, getting to walk out with a
designated player and receive their signature before taking
free seats in the crowd - the first 11 has been selected from the
New Zealand Cricket Club - online at nzcricket.co.nz
the Sri Lankan openers are Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu,
with Chris Martin to bowl from the Embankment End to Jayasuriya
two slips, third man, gully, point, cover, mid on, square leg and
long leg in place for the left-hander on strike to the right arm
        over the wicket bowler
0.1 Martin to Jayasuriya, no run, short rising ball outside off stump,
well left alone through to the keeper
0.2 Martin to Jayasuriya, no run, shortish ball on a good length on off
stump, defended watchfully down in close on the off side from the
        crease
0.3 Martin to Jayasuriya, no run, super quick rising ball from Martin,
Jayasuriya fends down at it but it sharply comes up into his ribs,
immediately hurting Jayasuriya who haunches over, and walks away
        behind the stumps
he's a very looking captain, that was a very useful sharp delivery
from Martin, tickled him up nicely, now on comes the physio, he's
on the ground receiving a fair bit of attention, and after a long
break he bravely returns to his feet and says he'll
soldier on, admirable stuff from the captain, on whom the team so
        often relies upon for inspiration
0.4 Martin to Jayasuriya, no run, good rising ball outside off stump,
Jayasuriya very watchfully lets this pass through outside off
        stump
0.5 Martin to Jayasuriya, no run, shortish straight ball, forces
Jayasuriya to hop back into his crease, defending away from the
body towards Harris at cover point
0.6 Martin to Jayasuriya, no run, fuller ball outside off stump,
strongly cracked square but not past Harris at point, Martin
competes a nice tidy opening over to the match

ex-Central Districts and now Wellington medium quick Andrew Penn to
open the bowling from the Centennial Stand End
two slips, third man, point, extra cover, mid off, mid on, square
leg and long leg in place for the right handed Atapattu on strike
to the right arm over the wicket Penn
1.1 Penn to Atapattu, no run, good full ball takes Atapattu low down on
the pads angling down leg, looking to turn it away
1.2 Penn to Atapattu, two runs, overpitched a little, Atapattu plays a
sweet shot digging it out from his toes, all timing, straight down
the ground on the leg side to open Sri Lanka's account with a
couple as McMillan chases from mid on
1.3 Penn to Atapattu, one run, shortish ball on leg stump, tucked down
off the hip to Twose at long leg
1.4 Penn to Jayasuriya, no run, shortish ball on off stump, Jayasuriya
hops on the crease with uncertainty in defending it down on the
leg side of the pitch, came back a bit on him, inside edging it
1.5 Penn to Jayasuriya, two runs, too full outside off stump,
Jayasuriya squeezes down on it, steering it between backward point
and cover point fielders, overhauled two third of the way to the
rope as there was no great power in it, but he's underway
1.6 Penn to Jayasuriya, no run, again a bit too full outside off stump,
strongly driven straight up the ground to mid off

End of over 2 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 5/0 (RR: 2.50)
AJ Penn 1-0-5-0 - Centennial Stand End
MS Atapattu 3* (3b) ST Jayasuriya 2* (9b)

2.1 Martin to Atapattu, no run, good full straight back interestingly
draws Atapattu back in his crease, defending down on the leg side
        of the pitch
2.2 Martin to Atapattu, no run, squared around in defence by a shorter
ball on off stump, misplays it down behind point, looking to work
it on the leg side, neither batsman is reading Martin so far
2.3 Martin to Atapattu, one run, a bit too full on the legs, low full
toss mistimed away towards vacant wide midwicket, first run off
Martin's bowling as McMillan fields from straighter at mid on
2.4 Martin to Jayasuriya, no run, lovely ball! quick rising ball has
Jayasuriya totally misjudging another, up into the thigh pad and
balloons away on the off side of the pitch
2.5 Martin to Jayasuriya, wide: no run, full, quick and wide down the
leg side, has a big swing trying to whip it away but misses, boos
from the crowd as umpire Bowden spoils Martin's fun by calling it
        a wide
2.5 Martin to Jayasuriya, two runs, overpitched on the toes, firmly
clipped out through wide midwicket, Twose scurries after it from
mid on and prevents thoughts of a third with a quick return
2.6 Martin to Jayasuriya, OUT: Jayasuriya's battling through the pain
doesn't last long, pushing forward in defence at a lovely ball
seaming and angling away from the left hander outside off stump,
got a regulation edge through to Fleming low down at first slip
        falling back,

he can't take it cleanly and it pops straight back out, but
vigilant keeper Parore was right there to scoop it up before it
hit the turf, a two-man catch to remove the captain!
wicket-keeper for today, Kumar Sangakkara is the new batsman, at
        the non-striker's end
3.1 Penn to Atapattu, wide: no run, quick, full and wide down the leg
side, umpire Hill duly awards the free run
3.1 Penn to Atapattu, no run, quick and full again, but this time much
straighter, Atapattu drives but it comes back in, inside edging
into the front pad, rebounds towards point, appeal for lbw quickly
turned down by umpire Hill who spotted the obvious edge
3.2 Penn to Atapattu, wide: no run, another one too full and wide down
the leg side, Penn's line is mixed so far
3.2 Penn to Atapattu, wide: no run, dear oh dear, Penn strays a mile
down the leg side once more
now captain Fleming comes down and has a chat with his bowler,
        trying to settle him down
3.2 Penn to Atapattu, wide: FOUR, oh dear, but it's even worse this
time! terribly wide and too far for Parore to get across to, down
to the boundary for 5 bonus runs
3.2 Penn to Atapattu, FOUR, he gets it straighter, but it's a low full
toss, picked off through vacant midwicket, and already 12 runs
from the over with only 2 legitimate balls bowled!
3.3 Penn to Atapattu, three runs, and overpitched on the legs again,
turned away through midwicket, McMillan chases from mid on and
just overhauls inside the boundary as it wasn't quite as well
        timed
15 runs from 3 legitimate deliveries this over, and requires the
captain to come down from the slips to have another long talk with
        his bowler
3.4 Penn to Sangakkara, two runs, overpitched outside off stump this
time, Sangakkara steers away his first delivery nicely through
backward point, looks set to hit the rope again but Twose makes
tremendous ground around the boundary at third man to slide and
        save inside the rope
he scooped it back to Harris chasing from backward point, and the
teamwork keeps it down to just two
3.5 Penn to Sangakkara, no run, much straighter this time, worked away
towards midwicket, Sangakkara looks for the single but with
uncertainty, and says no as Sinclair scoots across to field from
square leg to cut it off
3.6 Penn to Sangakkara, two runs, overpitched outside off stump again,
strongly square driven, Harris misfields at backward point,
straight through his legs and Twose has to field in the deep again
        from third man

AJ Penn 2-0-24-0 (4w) - Centennial Stand End
MS Atapattu 11* (9b 1x4) K Sangakkara 4* (3b)

       Penn ends a 10-ball, 19-run over, Sri Lanka's run rate receiving a
healthy boost after the early loss of the captain, he's unlikely
to get another in this spell
4.1 Martin to Atapattu, wide: no run, now Martin gets in on the act
with his width, this one judged to be a bit too wide outside off
stump as Atapattu leaves it alone
4.1 Martin to Atapattu, no run, full and straight, driven straight up
        to McMillan at mid on
4.2 Martin to Atapattu, no run, good tight full ball, squeezed out up
towards McMillan coming in to field from mid on again
4.3 Martin to Atapattu, no run, props well forward outside off stump,
dead batting it in defence in close on the off side
4.4 Martin to Atapattu, one run, full on the legs, clipped away through
backward square leg, Penn around from long leg to field, firing
back a strong return from the deep directly over the stumps to a
strong round of surprisingly genuine applause, given his last
        over!
4.5 Martin to Sangakkara, no run, good straight full ball, pushes back
watchfully in defence on the off side of the pitch
4.6 Martin to Sangakkara, one run, short ball angling on leg stump,
turned away effortlessly down to Franklin at long leg

James Franklin replaces Penn at the bowling crease as expected,
after a spell of 2-0-24-0 (4 wides) at the Centennial Stand End
5.1 Franklin to Sangakkara, no run, props forward to a good accurate
opening delivery on off stump, defends away towards point where
Vettori and Harris converge to field it
5.2 Franklin to Sangakkara, no run, shortish rising ball outside off
stump, guides it down from a reasonable height to backward point
        where Harris fields
5.3 Franklin to Sangakkara, no run, short rising straight ball, tucked
down towards midwicket, Sangakkara calls 'no!' as Sinclair's
quickly across to field from square leg
5.4 Franklin to Sangakkara, no run, forward to a fuller ball outside
off stump, firmly stroking it along the ground directly to Vettori
        at cover point
5.5 Franklin to Sangakkara, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump, duly
punished by Sangakkara, strongly driven straight through vacant
cover, taking up the welcome invitation more than eagerly
5.6 Franklin to Sangakkara, two runs, short rising ball outside off
stump, slashes it hard and wide of the slips, Twose makes quick
ground down at third man, making a fine diving stop inside the
rope and firing back a strong return, saving two runs

6.1 Martin to Atapattu, no run, full ball outside off stump, firmly
driven into the covers, Vettori slides across to field to his left
6.2 Martin to Atapattu, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump, this time
Atapattu works it wide of Vettori, strongly through the covers and
it's a collection job for the two chasing fielders
6.3 Martin to Atapattu, one run, shortish straighter ball, hops on the
crease to work it away forward of square leg for an easy single,
Sinclair fields to his left as they jog through easily
6.4 Martin to Sangakkara, one run, quick and full on the legs, strongly
clipped away fine, but Franklin is solid down at fine leg, no more
        than a single on offer
6.5 Martin to Atapattu, no run, forward, defends straight back down the
pitch, Martin partially stops low down on his follow through
6.6 Martin to Atapattu, no run, forward, defends down into the covers
        where Vettori fields

7.1 Franklin to Sangakkara, OUT: good length ball outside off stump,
shapes away, Sangakkara gropes for it, perhaps a little
unnecessarily, guiding it straight down to Astle at slip low down,
        taking a safe catch

7.2 Franklin to Jayawardene, one run, quick ball but angling on leg
stump, Jayawardene hops on the crease to work it down to Twose at
        long leg
7.3 Franklin to Atapattu, no run, good quick full ball, hurries through
on Atapattu, draws a huge appeal for lbw but umpire Hill quickly
        indicates it pitched outside leg
replays back him up perfectly, just fractionally outside the line,
but looked to be heading straight on to the stumps, the odd
uneducated portion of the crowd boo the decision upon seeing the
        replay
7.4 Franklin to Atapattu, no run, good tight ball on off stump,
watchfully defended away to backward point
7.5 Franklin to Atapattu, no run, quick and full on the legs, firmly
clipped away to Vettori at forward square leg
7.6 Franklin to Atapattu, no run, good tight ball on off stump, well
forward in defence down into the covers

DPMD Jayawardene 1* (1b) MS Atapattu 17* (22b 2x4)

8.1 Martin to Jayawardene, FOUR, props forward in defence to a fair
ball outside off stump, gets a thick inside edge that just travels
past the stumps, racing fine of Penn at fine leg, a lucky let off
        early for Jayawardene
8.2 Martin to Jayawardene, no run, props forward in defence, played
firmly up to McMillan at mid on
8.3 Martin to Jayawardene, (noball) no run, super quick rising ball to
tickle the new batsman up, Jayawardene very awkwardly fends it
down as it hurries on, dropping it down in close on the leg side,
Martin concedes the no-ball but gains plenty with that great nut
8.3 Martin to Jayawardene, no run, fuller ball quite wide outside off
stump, Jayawardene is drawn like a magnet to it, driving and
missing, just sliding it past the outside edge
8.4 Martin to Jayawardene, no run, and another! pushing forward at one
reasonably wide outside off stump on a shorter length, just
manages to withdraw the bat out of the way as he went to play at
        it
8.5 Martin to Jayawardene, two runs, rather full outside off stump,
jammed strongly into the ground and gets away past Harris a bit
backward of square at point to cut it off, Vettori chases it down
        well from cover
that brings up the Sri Lankan 50 off 54 balls
8.6 Martin to Jayawardene, no run, shortish straight ball, hops back in
the crease to defend down in close on the leg side of the pitch

End of over 9 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 51/2 (RR: 5.67)

MS Atapattu 17* (22b 2x4) DPMD Jayawardene 7* (8b 1x4)

9.1 Franklin to Atapattu, no run, props well forward in defence to a
good line ball on off stump, played down into the covers, Sinclair
        in to field
9.2 Franklin to Atapattu, no run, forward then goes back to a short
rising straight ball, defending watchfully down in close on the
leg side, Franklin charges in on his follow through to field
9.3 Franklin to Atapattu, two runs, short ball outside off stump, well
cut down through backward point, Atapattu takes on Martin's strong
throw from around at third man, but it's a little too high and
Parore drops the ball while concentrating on the whipping off of
the bails than the taking the return cleanly
but Atapattu ran it well, safely home in any case
9.4 Franklin to Atapattu, no run, full outside off stump, strongly
driven up the ground on the off side, Penn dives well to his right
at mid off to cut it off very well and prevent a single
9.5 Franklin to Atapattu, one run, superb fielding again by Penn, this
one's even better as it's played much wider to his left, beating
Sinclair at extra cover, but Penn dives athletically to stop on
the circle edge, earns a very big round of applause for the effort
9.6 Franklin to Jayawardene, one run, shortish ball outside off stump,
cut down backward of point, quick single taken with the shot as
Harris darts to his left, firing at the stumps but over the top,
may have been quite close, going by the reactions of the fielding
        side

10.1 Martin to Jayawardene, no run, full and straight, pushed up on the
leg side of the pitch in defence
10.2 Martin to Jayawardene, no run, good testing ball on a back of a
length outside off stump, drops the bottom hand off the bat in
fending forward at it in defence, dropping it down in close square
        on the off side
10.3 Martin to Jayawardene, five runs, dear oh dear, what a comedy of
errors, Jayawardene tucks it off the hip backward of square leg,
they hurry a quick single which looks awfully tight, Sinclair has
a shy at the keeper's end but it just passes over the top, gone
for all money had it hit,
Vettori backs up in the covers and has a quick shy at the bowler's
end as Jayawardene is asleep, but he too misses and it races away
down to the long on boundary for 4 overthrows
10.4 Martin to Atapattu, no run, shortish straight ball, defends down to
Sinclair directly at square leg, who gently underarms it in this
        time
10.5 Martin to Atapattu, no run, forward, defends back up on the off
        side of the pitch
10.6 Martin to Atapattu, no run, shoulders arms to a quick rising ball
        outside off stump

DPMD Jayawardene 13* (12b 1x4) MS Atapattu 20* (30b 2x4)

11.1 Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, full ball outside off stump,
firmly stroked straight up to Penn at mid off
11.2 Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
Jayawardene goes for a big pull shot, not a judicious stroke given
it was tight on his off stump, never quite into the right
position, lucky not to get an underedge through to the keeper as
        he missed
11.3 Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, more wisely shoulders arms outside
off stump to a similar ball this time
11.4 Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, full outside off stump, firmly
driven with a vertical blade straight up to Penn at mid off
11.5 Franklin to Jayawardene, FOUR, a bit too full this time outside off
stump and Jayawardene's beautifully wristy timing comes into
effect, just rocking forward into it, driving straight down the
ground on the off side past Penn at mid off
11.6 Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, another full ball and again
strongly driven straight up the ground, but too straight this time
from Jayawardene, into the stumps at the bowler's end, ricocheting
away to Penn coming across to cut it off

Penn returns to get a second chance, this time from the Embankment
End, replacing Martin after a 6-over spell which proved very
useful and rather hostile at times
12.1 Penn to Atapattu, no run, full outside off stump, firmly driven
straight up to Twose at mid off, and Penn gets an ironic round of
applause for managing to bowl a dot ball
12.2 Penn to Atapattu, no run, shortish straight ball coming back in,
looks to force it straight up the ground but the movement back in

12.3 Penn to Atapattu, no run, another brisk full ball, Atapattu looked
to work it to leg but done for movement again as it swung a fair
way back into the pads, rebounding back on the leg side of the

12.6 Penn to Atapattu, no run, defends from the crease, pushing back up

13.2 Franklin to Jayawardene, one run, short rising ball outside off

as he reached for it very late in the piece
13.3 Franklin to Atapattu, no run, props forward with uncertainty in

14.2 Penn to Jayawardene, no run, forward, at last he pitches outside

the first 10 overs were they up at a fair clip when Penn gave them
a sizeable helping hand with 12 runs coming from his bowling in
        the form of wides
Atapattu and Jayawardene looked comfortable together, steadying the

41.2 Dharmasena to Penn, one run, flighted full, driven down towards
long on, they look for a second but hesitate a bit much and have
        to stay back at home
41.3 Dharmasena to Harris, one run, flighted up outside off stump,
        driven down to long off
41.4 Dharmasena to Penn, two runs, down the pitch, doesn't quite get it
into the slot and ends up squirting it away towards vacant
backward point, no fielders in that general area means they can
sneak back for a second and rather well too
41.5 Dharmasena to Penn, one run, full outside off stump, driven down to
        Atapattu at long off
41.6 Dharmasena to Harris, no run, shortish ball on off stump, steered
        straight to backward point

42.1 Muralitharan to Penn, one run, stabs forward in defence, guiding it
away towards backward point, Jayasuriya across to field from short
        third man
42.2 Muralitharan to Harris, one run, driven down towards long off,
        another easy single milked
42.3 Muralitharan to Penn, two runs, down the track, big hit over the
top but doesn't get a complete hold of it properly, but gets away
with it as it pitches into space at deep extra cover
42.4 Muralitharan to Penn, OUT: Penn tries his luck on once too often,
driving all around one that turned right back through the gate,
and Sri Lanka are now just one wicket away from finishing the job
        off quite comprehensively

last man to the crease is Chris Martin, and with two balls left in
the over, Muralitharan would back himself to snare a 5th 5-wicket
        bag in ODIs
42.5 Muralitharan to Martin, wide: FOUR, but not with that ball he
won't! turns sharply down the leg side past everybody, a long
chase for short fine leg but over the rope it goes
42.5 Muralitharan to Martin, OUT: but with this ball he will! Martin
emulates Penn just two balls before him, driving all around one
turning in from outside off stump, through the gate and the bails
        go a flyin'
