5th ODI: New Zealand v Pakistan at Dunedin, 28 Feb 2001

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match scheduled to start at 2pm local time (0100 GMT)

welcome to Carisbrook in Dunedin for the fifth and final One-Day
International of the National Bank Series between New Zealand and
        Pakistan
it's a magnificent day here, after some heavy fog and misty clouds
hanging over the city earlier in the morning, it's cleared to be
an absolute pearler, and the chances of interruptions today must
        be very slight indeed
it's the 13th and final One-Day International to be played on New
Zealand soil, and Dunedin's first and only international match of
the season, and what a big game they receive too
with all the University of Otago students back to study recently,
there's plenty ready to turn up for today's match, already a
reasonable little crowd is building, to hopefully one of the best
of the year by the evening
the pitch is primed and ready, having received the very, very heavy
roller treatment, and is primed and ready for a runfest if the
        teams' batsmen get it together
Pakistan captain Moin Khan has won the toss and elected to bat
first, unsurprisingly, wanting to make first usage of this
potential belter and put pressure on New Zealand in a large night-
        time chase
there are three changes to the Pakistan team, with Imran Farhat
returning to replace Imran Nazir, both having had two games each
in the series with modest returns (Farhat 5 and 4, Nazir 32 and 0)
Shahid Afridi takes the place of the injured Inzamam-ul-Haq in the
batting line-up, while Shoaib Akhtar has been risked, coming into
the side in place of Saqlain Mushtaq, who conceded 24 runs from
his final over of the series
New Zealand go into the match with an unchanged side, with Andre
Adams now having to wait until some time in the future to make his
international debut, now acting as 12th man for three straight
        games
there's plenty to play for in the Pakistani side, with Arshad Khan,
Younis Khan and Humayun Farhat to come over for the first-class
portion of the tour, and those to go home will be named after
        today's game
the players come out to the middle, all assembled in a long line
with the officials, to stand for a minute's silence in memory of
        the late Sir Donald Bradman
it'll be Daryl Tuffey to open the bowling from the Railway End,
with Saeed Anwar to take first strike, and Shahid Afridi at the
        non-striker's end
slip, third man, backward point, cover point, mid off, mid on,
square leg and long leg in place for the left-handed Saeed facing
the right arm over the wicket Tuffey
0.1 Tuffey to Saeed Anwar, one run, Pakistan underway immediately,
shortish straight ball, tucked away into the big gap at wide
midwicket, running an easy single with the shot, Vincent fielding
        from square leg
0.2 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, short ball outside off stump,
Afridi makes a dramatic leave, raising the bat well clear in
letting it go through to Parore
0.3 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, a beauty! beats Afridi nicely,
back of a length and seaming away, Afridi is turned inside out by
a lovely ball just shaping away from the presented outside edge of
        the blade
0.4 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, and done again, Afridi looking to
drive this time, but Tuffey drifts one fuller and wider, Afridi
follows and is lucky not to gain fine contact once more
0.5 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, full and straight, Afridi gets
into line much better, playing a sweet drive straight back on the
off side of the pitch, Twose in from mid off to field
0.6 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, one run, stands tall on the crease,
defending and in doing so runs an outside away down to Franklin at
third man to get off the mark

End of over 1 (2 runs) Pakistan 2/0 (RR: 2.00)
DR Tuffey 1-0-2-0 - Railway End
Shahid Afridi 1* (5b) Saeed Anwar 1* (1b)

and it's Franklin who comes in from the boundary to mark out his
run to open up from the Hillside End
two slips, third man, backward point, cover, mid off, mid on,
square leg and long leg in place for the right-handed Afridi
facing the left arm over the wicket Franklin
1.1 Franklin to Shahid Afridi, one run, ooh my! full delivery outside
off stump, Afridi plays a full blooded drive going for it,
spearing a thick outside edge in the air through backward point,
just evading the diving Harris to his left, very close to grabbing
        what would've been a
spectacular take, down to Tuffey around from third man
1.2 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, no run, full and straight, firmly defended
straight back down the pitch to the bowler
1.3 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, FOUR, a bit too full outside off stump,
Saeed plays a wonderful drive from the crease, all timing as he
strongly guides it through extra cover, McMillan gives up the
chase from mid off as the outfield carries it away quicker
1.4 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, no run, shorter straight ball, turned away
off the legs down to Vincent at square leg
1.5 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, one run, full outside off stump, firmly
pushed away towards extra cover for an easy single with the shot
as McMillan has to field from much straighter
1.6 Franklin to Shahid Afridi, one run, shortish straight ball, drops
it down in close on the leg side of the pitch, Saeed calls him
through for a smart single as the field on the off side are too
deep to prevent it, a diving underarm throw at the stumps goes
        wide with Saeed easily home

End of over 2 (7 runs) Pakistan 9/0 (RR: 4.50)
JEC Franklin 1-0-7-0 - Hillside End
Shahid Afridi 3* (7b) Saeed Anwar 6* (5b 1x4)

        cover point
2.2 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, compactly stretches forward in
defence with bat/pad tucked together, drops it from an underedge
into the pad, rolling back down the pitch
2.3 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, (noball) no run, short pitched ball,
Afridi jumps on the crease to try and cut it hard, just missing
through to the keeper, suggestions of an edge but no-ball had been
        long called beforehand
2.3 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, drives and misses outside off
stump, well beaten by one just moving away from the outside edge
        through to Parore
2.4 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, shuffles well forward, defending
straight back down the pitch to the bowler
2.5 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, two runs, angling on leg stump, strongly
clipped away through backward square leg, superb fielding by
Vettori sprinting around from long leg to grab is diving just
inside the boundary rope, saving two certain runs
2.6 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, plays and misses, walking forward
into an attempted off drive, is beaten by subtle movement away
past the outside edge through to the keeper

End of over 3 (3 runs) Pakistan 12/0 (RR: 4.00)
DR Tuffey 2-0-5-0 (1nb) - Railway End
Saeed Anwar 6* (5b 1x4) Shahid Afridi 5* (14b)

3.1 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, no run, pushing forward in defence from
the crease to a good length ball on off stump, misses and it drops
at his feet from the top of the pad
3.2 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, no run, good shortish ball keeps Saeed
playing from the crease, watchfully defending back on the off side
        for Franklin to field himself
3.3 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, no run, good shortish ball on a good tight
line once more, Saeed defends from a height straight back down the
        pitch to the bowler again
3.4 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, one run, full ball outside off stump,
strongly forced up towards McMillan at wide mid off, very tight
single taken with the shot, Saeed has to dive home as the throw
goes just wide, very touch and go
3.5 Franklin to Shahid Afridi, no run, very full straight ball,
powerfully struck into the pitch straight back at Franklin who
does well to get a hand to it, half stopping it, dropping down
        into the pitch
3.6 Franklin to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, but not this one, Afridi smacks it
straight back down the pitch past the bowler, just beating
Franklin who grasped at it but not quickly enough to stop this one

End of over 4 (5 runs) Pakistan 17/0 (RR: 4.25)
JEC Franklin 2-0-12-0 - Hillside End
Saeed Anwar 7* (9b 1x4) Shahid Afridi 9* (16b 1x4)

4.1 Tuffey to Saeed Anwar, no run, lovely ball! Saeed is in no man's
land, eventually trying to defend from the crease but is beaten
all ends up, squared around by the perfect length and subtle away
        seam
4.2 Tuffey to Saeed Anwar, one run, pushes from the crease more
confidently, cleverly dropping it down in close on the off side of
the pitch, placing it well in the midst of the bowler and the two
off side fielders to enable the quick single taken easily with the
        shot
4.3 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, overpitched on the legs and duly
punished, strongly clipped away through backward square leg, well
wide of the diving Vincent placed much squarer
4.4 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, shortish ball a bit wide outside
off stump to merit a stroke by Afridi, leaving it well alone
        through to the keeper

to a good length straight ball, presenting the full face of the
bat in playing it back down the pitch

defending straight up towards mid on

Saeed Anwar 8* (11b 1x4) Shahid Afridi 13* (20b 2x4)

5.1 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, no run, quicker climbing ball outside off
stump, Saeed goes for a big pull but completely mistimes it,
hurried up a bit too much, luckily gets away with a lob that drops
harmlessly away into space on the leg side of the pitch
5.2 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, no run, fair length ball outside off
stump, sweetly driven from the crease straight up to McMillan at
        mid off
5.3 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, FOUR, super shot, full outside off stump,
Saeed simply steers it away using the pace of the ball, into the
gap at point and it races into the short square boundary
5.4 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, no run, short ball outside off stump,
Saeed has nothing to do with this one, leaving well alone through
        to Parore

Shahid Afridi 13* (20b 2x4) Saeed Anwar 12* (17b 2x4)

6.1 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, shot! shortish ball outside off
stump, Afridi absolutely smashes this one, standing tall and
delivering with no footwork at all, but he played it well, carving
in the air through cover, just wide of Oram who had no time to
        react at all
6.2 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, defends and misses a good length
ball outside off stump, again done for length as he plays from the
        crease
6.3 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, shorter ball outside off stump,
tries to pull it away but can't gain sufficient leverage, dragging
it straight down to McMillan at mid on
6.4 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, (noball) two runs, oversteps, full ball on
the legs, picked away through midwicket, not perfectly timed but
an easy two are on offer as Vincent fields from square leg
6.4 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, SIX, overpitched on the legs, powerfully
picked up, using the pace of the delivery more than anything else,
depositing it over the backward square leg boundary, the early
boisterous crowd are slightly less enthusiastic now
6.5 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, no run, shoulders arms to a shortish ball
        outside off stump
6.6 Tuffey to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, short ball outside off stump, Afridi
emulates the first ball of the over by carving it away in the air
down through cover, just wide of Oram grabbing at it just a bit
squarer, crashes into the side on boundary

End of over 7 (17 runs) Pakistan 43/0 (RR: 6.14)
DR Tuffey 4-0-27-0 (2nb) - Railway End
Saeed Anwar 12* (17b 2x4) Shahid Afridi 29* (27b 4x4 1x6)

a more than useful 17-run over for Pakistan, all but one coming
        from the blade of Afridi
7.1 Franklin to Saeed Anwar, OUT: slashes at shortish ball outside off
stump, trying to keep pace with his quicker scoring partner, but
only manages to get a fine nick straight through to the keeper as
        he's done for extra bounce

       Pakistan 43/1, Partnership of 43

        straight through to Parore

the crease to defend it from the crease, down to Vincent at square
        leg
7.5 Franklin to Abdur Razzaq, no run, good length straight ball, Razzaq
is squared around trying to work it away off the legs, rebounds
from the pad in close on the off side of the pitch, looks for a
quick single but has to get back into his crease as it's not on
7.6 Franklin to Abdur Razzaq, two runs, overpitched on the toes,
squeezed away through wide midwicket, they scurry back for a very
marginal second run, but Vincent's throw to the bowler's end,
after chasing from square leg, is a poor one and Afridi scampers
        through safely

to it quickly, pulling down through vacant midwicket, picking out

        and truly
that brings up the Pakistan 50 from 53 balls

at it, gets a thick outside edge along the ground down to Franklin
        at third man

inside edges into the pad, dropping it down in close on the leg

11.1 Franklin to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, shortish straight ball, Afridi has
another awkward swing at it, getting a very lucky, streaky edge
flying quickly through the air down fine of third man to the
        boundary
11.2 Franklin to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, too short, pulled hard in the air
through midwicket, one bounce just inside the boundary and away

        40 balls, 8x4, 1x6

uncertainty, misses as it cannons into the pad, rebounding away
        towards cover
11.4 Franklin to Shahid Afridi, two runs, Afridi swings and gets away
with it again, pulling a short lifting ball away over wide
midwicket, devoid of any great timing, lobbing safely clear of
McMillan chasing after it from mid on
11.5 Franklin to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, Afridi goes for another one,
trying to swing another one over the top, a bit uppish and lobs it
up towards Vettori running back and to his left from mid off,
slides awkwardly trying to take it, but through his hands,
parrying it away to the boundary
from a fair distance, Vettori seemed to be affected by the glare, a
big let-off for Afridi who has been living very dangerously
despite the super quick scoring rate
11.6 Franklin to Shahid Afridi, no run, straight ball, watchfully
defended straight back down the pitch to the bowler

leaves well alone through to the keeper

through to the keeper outside off stump
12.5 Oram to Abdur Razzaq, two runs, shortish ball outside off stump,
drives from the crease, running it away just wide of Fleming at
gully, Franklin around from third man to field, just sliding to
stop it inside the rope at deep backward point
12.6 Oram to Abdur Razzaq, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump,
wonderfully well driven through extra cover, the outfield does its
best to help the chasing Twose, but his legs can't carry him
quickly enough, diving at it as it crosses the rope, too well
        timed

midwicket, two bounces in the deep and away it goes

away across the line, but this time inside edges it into the
pitch, bouncing back on the leg side tamely

swings and misses trying to drive through the covers
44.3 McMillan to Moin Khan, FOUR, McMillan at last errs, low full toss,
swung away through midwicket, nobody out there and it rolls away
to zero fanfare and the players just watch it go
44.4 McMillan to Moin Khan, SIX, shot! hard to describe this shot,
bizarre stuff from Moin, he falls over trying to swing one across
the line, picking it up hard and flat over midwicket, just
        clearing the boundary

away straight to Fleming at backward point, they scamper the
single as Fleming elects to just hang on to the ball
44.6 McMillan to Saleem Elahi, one run, full on the toes, squeezed up
towards Harris at wide midwicket, tight single taken with the
shot, the side on throw just missing, with Saleem likely to have
been in a bit of trouble had it hit

Shoaib looks back at Waqar with a hint of bemusement as Pakistan
conspire to be dismissed three balls inside their 50 overs, after
having been just 3 down going into the 42nd of the innings
Pakistan losing their last 4 wickets for the addition of just 4
runs in the last 9 deliveries, though prior to that, the smashing
of 52 runs in a 4-over period has set them up a very strong total
with which to challenge New Zealand
all throughout the top order there were solid contributions,
firstly the streaky-but-effective smash-and-grab effort from
Afridi with 65 from just 55 balls, then the accumulation of
Razzaq, followed by the even smarter accumulation by Youhana who
        managed
to do it but at near run-a-ball pace, doubly quick, before Farhat,
Saleem and Moin came out with useful cameos - Moin's could well
prove the most decisive with 36 coming from just 20 balls - 21 off
        one Tuffey over alone
a very mixed bowling effort from New Zealand, with the part-timers
Oram and McMillan having the most success, while ever-reliable
'dibbly-dobbly' Harris was by far the most economical
New Zealand will have their backs to the wall facing a pace quintet
of Wasim, Waqar, Shoaib, Azhar and Razzaq, but the pitch is made
for runs, and the boundaries are all short, particularly square of
        the wicket
they will come out in search of 286 at a required run rate of 5.72
per over, in just over 45 minutes time at 6:15pm local time (0515

two slips, third man, backward point, ciover, mid off, mid on,

it down to Waqar at third man, Fleming and New Zealand underway
        immediately
0.2 Wasim Akram to Astle, no run, beaten! a beauty early from Wasim,
shortish ball sliding on past the outside edge, Astle pushing from
the crease in defence, safely clear through to the keeper
0.3 Wasim Akram to Astle, no run, hops on the crease to turn down a
shortish straight ball off the hip to Youhana at square leg
0.4 Wasim Akram to Astle, no run, shortish ball angling away wider
outside off stump, Astle shapes to play then shoulders arms
        through to the keeper

negotiate another good shortish straight ball seaming back, drops
away from the pad in close on the leg side
0.6 Wasim Akram to Astle, wide: no run, short ball outside off stump,
Astle is well forward, cutting and missing on the crease, a bit

1.2 Waqar Younis to Fleming, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
stands tall on the crease, strongly forcing it off the back foot
straight up to Saleem at mid off
1.3 Waqar Younis to Fleming, no run, pushing forward at a shortish ball
on off stump, turned down just behind square on the leg side, both
batsmen look hesitantly for a quick run but wisely stay back as
Youhana fields quickly to his left
1.4 Waqar Younis to Fleming, no run, fuller ball outside off stump but
Fleming isn't interested, holding the bat back well out of the way
        in leaving through to Moin
1.5 Waqar Younis to Fleming, no run, but very next ball it brings a
very different attitude, Fleming having a swing and a miss, trying
to drive through the covers off the back foot, but never really to
it as it drifted away further from the outside edge through to
        Moin
1.6 Waqar Younis to Fleming, no run, short ball outside off stump, cuts
strongly down forward of point, but can't beat a good diving save
by Afridi to his right at cover, parrying it down close to his
right, ensuring the first maiden of the match goes Waqar's way

picks up and shies at thekeeper's end, Oram scrambles home as the

9 coming from the over, we're down to just 7 needed for match, and
series victory, with 3 overs remaining, Pakistan must pluck 4
wickets from the air to steal this one

the back foot up to Waqar at mid off
47.2 Abdur Razzaq to Oram, one run, shortish ball, forced off the back
foot up towards Waqar again, this time he takes hiim on with a
very tight single, the underarm throw just missing the stumps,
looked close but just safe had it hit
       6 needed, 16 balls remaining
47.3 Abdur Razzaq to Harris, no run, short ball outside off stump,
Harris tries his best to pull it right around the corner, but it's
a swing and a miss through to Moin, swinging away late
47.4 Abdur Razzaq to Harris, no run, charges down the track, playing all
around a full ball down the leg side, swinging back just past leg
stump, straight through to Moin again, just a slight sign of panic

carved away hard and flat over cover point, and it's all over ...
New Zealand win by 4 wickets and take the series 3-2!
an amazing match that almost had a final twist at the death, as New
Zealand stumbled six times towards the end after Fleming and
Astle's remarkable opening stand of 193, a record for all wickets
against all countries for New Zealand in ODIs
Astle notching up his 9th ODI century with a splendid 119, and ably
supported by Fleming with 60, the rest of the team managed little
contributions of between 12 and 17, except for Parore's golden
        duck
when they lost three wickets for one run within the space of five
balls, spanning the 42nd and 43rd overs, it looked as though there
may be a few embarrassed faces on the home team, with 34 still
needed at that stage, but the two lefties, Harris and Oram
steered them home ably, winning with 11 balls to spare
the bowling had perhaps just too much a sameness to it on this fine
run-scoring deck, and they were consistently taken to from the
start, except for Razzaq who kept them quiet in his seven overs,
and Wasim who got better and better each time he returned
it's New Zealand's 5th highest target, and their 3rd highest
successfully chased in One-Day Internationals, and from a real
mixture of young and old players struggling through a season with
a long run of crippling injuries hampering the squad, it's a
fine achievement to come throug and win a series against arguably
their toughest opponents at home this season after being
embarrassed by Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka somewhat, coming from 2-1
down to win two in a row - the first time they've managed that
since their victory at the ICC KnockOut at Nairobi in October last
        year
time for the presentations, with National Bank Cricket Manager
Gavin Larsen the master of ceremonies
New Zealand Cricket chief executive Christopher Doig says a few
words, congratulating both sides for their fine display, to Moin
Khan and his side for taking it to the penultimate over of the
        last game of the series
and now presents New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming the National
Bank Trophy for the 3-2 series win, who raises it to an attentive,
        if somewhat shrunken crowd
Fleming acknowledges the opposition, who are appreciated as a young
and exciting team with a mixture of great old hands, and thanks
for the crowd for bearing with them during a difficult season, but
saying he had the belief in his side that they could do
it today when it was most needed
losing captain Moin Khan steps forward, saying just a few words,
congratulating New Zealand, but quite disappointed that his side
failed to take many opportunities that were presented to them,
with four clear simple catches dropped during the course of t
       the innings
Larsen presents the National Bank Player of the Match award to the
unarguable choice, Nathan Astle for his outstanding 119 from just
116 balls - and 21 boundaries, just one short of equalling the
        world record in that department
and that concludes the presentations, and our coverage from this
fifth and final National Bank One-Day International at Carisbrook
