square leg and long leg in place for the left-handed Fleming
facing the left arm over the wicket Wasim
0.1 Wasim Akram to Fleming, wide: FOUR, and what a start! wide down the

        again too wide
0.1 Wasim Akram to Fleming, wide: no run, and another! umpire Cowie

        legitimate ball bowled yet!
0.1 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, at last a real ball! good nut too,

NJ Astle 2* (4b) RG Twose 0* (4b)

2.1 Wasim Akram to Astle, three runs, shortish ball outside off stump,
slapped down through cover point, the slow outfield helps the

again presents the outside edge of the bat, straight to Azhar at

        let off for Twose

End of over 3 (3 runs) New Zealand 14/1 (RR: 4.67)
Wasim Akram 2-0-12-0 (4w) - Port Hills End
NJ Astle 5* (5b) RG Twose 0* (9b)

3.1 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, huge swing and miss outside off
stump, Astle looked to crunch it through the covers on the up but
it wasn't quite the right length for it, the bounce taking it well
over the edge through to the keeper
3.2 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, another cracker from Waqar,
excellent pace and carry, Astle is more tentative this time,
pushing forward at it, well beaten for bounce once more through to
        the keeper
3.3 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, fuller ball, watchfully tapped
straight back down the pitch to the bowler, Waqar gestures to
throw back at the stumps which brings a few derisory mumbles from
        the crowd
3.4 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, good straight ball, has Astle
defending from the crease to cover the seam movement back across
him, played straight back down the pitch
3.5 Waqar Younis to Astle, two runs, Waqar just drifts a bit too far on

through vacant wide midwicket well for an easy couple
3.6 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, straight ball on off stump, defends
        back into the off side

End of over 4 (2 runs) New Zealand 16/1 (RR: 4.00)

RG Twose 0* (9b) NJ Astle 7* (11b)

across in behind it, dropping it down in close on the leg side
from the top of the pad
4.2 Wasim Akram to Twose, no run, shortish ball on off stump, squares
Twose around, defending down to Saeed in from cover to field
4.3 Wasim Akram to Twose, no run, shortish ball on off stump, Wasim
dropping it on a pin at the moment, Twose can only but defend with
a dead bat down into the covers
4.4 Wasim Akram to Twose, wide: no run, wide and full outside off
stump, the pin has clearly blown to a new spot on the pitch, left
well alone through to the keeper to gain the free run
4.4 Wasim Akram to Twose, no run, good sharp ball rushed through
quicker on off stump, shoots through a bit on Twose who only just
manages to get in behind it in defence back on the off side of the
        pitch
4.5 Wasim Akram to Twose, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
Twose shapes to play but quickly raises the bat well clear to
        leave through to the keeper
4.6 Wasim Akram to Twose, one run, shortish ball outside off stump,
Twose half plays, half tries to get the bat clear, in the end gets
a peculiar shot away off the face down to third man to get off the
mark after 15 balls, the ball hitting the bat more than the bat
        striking the ball

End of over 5 (2 runs) New Zealand 18/1 (RR: 3.60)
Wasim Akram 3-0-14-0 (5w) - Port Hills End
RG Twose 1* (15b) NJ Astle 7* (11b)

playing it straight back down the pitch to the bowler
5.2 Waqar Younis to Twose, no run, props forward in defence, seams back
to strike the front pad before rebounding into the bat and up
towards Razzaq at mid off, appeal for lbw as it struck pad first,
but it's well outside the line of off stump despite cutting back

shortish ball just sliding away outside off stump
5.4 Waqar Younis to Twose, no run, quick ball pushed through on leg
stump, dropped down from the pad in close on the leg side
5.5 Waqar Younis to Twose, FOUR, shot! shortish ball on off stump,
powerfully driven on the up through vacant cover, crashes into the
boundary, a fine shot for the batsmen in a bit of a form slump
5.6 Waqar Younis to Twose, FOUR, fuller ball outside off stump, Twose
lashes after this one as well, scooping it up through the same
region, not quite as powerfully struck or timed, but it does the
job, trickling over the boundary away from the chasing cover man

End of over 6 (8 runs) New Zealand 26/1 (RR: 4.33)
Waqar Younis 3-0-11-1 - Hadlee Stand End
NJ Astle 7* (11b) RG Twose 9* (21b 2x4)

6.1 Wasim Akram to Astle, no run, lovely shortish ball angling across
the right hander, Astle feathers the bat away at it, trying to
steer it away square on the off side, beats the outside edge

leg side, Astle has a flick at it but misses comfortably for the
        free run
that's Wasim's sixth wide in just 3.1 overs, and with the first one
going to the boundary, it's cost Pakistan 10 runs alone
6.2 Wasim Akram to Astle, no run, good length ball on off stump, Astle
drives from the crease and gets a streaky inside edge into the
pad, rebounding out into the covers

tries to work it away but misses, dropping it from the pad in
        close on the leg side
6.4 Wasim Akram to Astle, one run, pushing forward tentatively outside
off stump, gets another streaky inside edge down into the legs,
drops away in close on the off side, Twose has good presence of
mind to call him through for the sharp single and does it well as
        the dive throw misses
6.5 Wasim Akram to Twose, wide: no run, down the leg side, Wasim's
seventh wide! this is not good stuff by the great bowler, extras
currently top scorer in the 7th over
6.5 Wasim Akram to Twose, one run, straighter ball, but able to tapped
away towards wide midwicket to work the single with the shot

        boundary
7.4 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, better short of a length straight
ball, Astle defends away towards backward point, slightly uppishly
as he tried to control the height
7.5 Waqar Younis to Astle, two runs, a bit full and straight on the
legs, well picked off through wide midwicket for an easy couple as

Ian Bishops unenviable record of most wides in a One-Day
        International by a single bowler
8.3 Wasim Akram to Twose, two runs, shortish straight ball, mistimed
pull down through wide midwicket, turned into a bit of a heave as

big attempted pull, misses, beaten for pace and bounce through to
        the keeper
9.3 Waqar Younis to Twose, legbye: one run, quick full straight ball,
another big swing trying to pick it off through the leg side,
taken on the pad as it swings sharply back to strike him outside
leg stump, deflecting down to third man
9.4 Waqar Younis to Astle, one run, straight ball on leg stump, clipped
strongly off the legs straight to Youhana at square leg, good
partial stop but parries it away from his body, allowing the quick
        run to be taken
9.5 Waqar Younis to Twose, SIX, shot! short ball on off stump, Twose
pulls with absolute ferocity, flat and hard all the way over

        incredibly flat to the boundary
9.6 Waqar Younis to Twose, FOUR, and another short ball, Twose swings
through the line again and picks it up over midwicket, not as well
timed but plenty of power, pitches a few metres inside the rope,
almost stopping dead, but just has enough juice to roll over the
        rope, bringing up

End of over 10 (12 runs) New Zealand 53/1 (RR: 5.30)

the New Zealand 50 from 60 balls
10.1 Wasim Akram to Astle, FOUR, shortish ball outside off stump,
strongly slapped down through cover point, no-one to cover that
one, 14 from the last 3 balls as New Zealand are off to a healthy
start on this belter of a track
10.2 Wasim Akram to Astle, no run, much better ball, seaming back at
Astle, spears down an outside edge, just controlling it short of

stroked into the ground, straight up to Elahi at mid off

Azhar Mahmood replaces Waqar at the Hadlee Stand End after a spell
        of 1-28 from 5 overs

shortish ball down the leg side, left through to the keeper
11.1 Azhar Mahmood to Twose, one run, angling on leg stump, clipped away
        through backward square leg
11.2 Azhar Mahmood to Astle, no run, fullish ball on off stump,
absolutely hammers the cover off the ball but Youhana has been
placed in at short cover point, making a tremendous stop to
        prevent a certain lightning boundary
11.3 Azhar Mahmood to Astle, FOUR, shortish straight ball sits up asking
to be hit, this time Astle has plenty of room within which to play
it, straight through vacant square leg
that brings up the 50 partnership from 61 balls

11.6 Azhar Mahmood to Astle, one run, charges down the track once more,
this time Azhar's length is a little better, Astle readjusts well,

        wides costing 13 runs
12.1 Abdur Razzaq to Astle, SIX, and what a start for him too, short and
down the leg side, pulled as easy as Astle pleases, helped on its
way straight over fine leg, Youhana posted out at deep backward
square leg doesn't move an inch, just watching it sail over
12.2 Abdur Razzaq to Astle, FOUR, down the leg side, and picked off even
stronger, from the legs on the ground this time, once again
Youhana is a mere spectator, doing the collection job as it goes
        to the same spot
12.3 Abdur Razzaq to Astle, one run, straighter ball, but still a bit
leg sidish, able to be worked up towards wide mid on for an easy
single as Wasim has to field to his right
12.4 Abdur Razzaq to Twose, one run, straight ball, worked off the legs
through forward square leg, they don't run the first hard so stick
to one as Inzamam fields around from deep backward square leg
12.5 Abdur Razzaq to Astle, one run, full and straight, driven into the
pitch, back up on the leg side, Astle calls through for a
comfortable quick single as Wasim's across from mid on to field
        behind the bowler
12.6 Abdur Razzaq to Twose, no run, shortish straight ball, tucked down
off the hip fine but Waqar's in place at leg gully to prevent any
        runs

RG Twose 25* (41b 3x4 1x6) NJ Astle 44* (45b 5x4 1x6)

15.1 Azhar Mahmood to Twose, one run, short ball sits up outside off
stump, Twose shapes to pull it through midwicket again, but
strangely doesn't have full conviction to the shot, perhaps done

times - in all that alone cost 10 runs, and McMillan equals Chris
Cairns' record fastest ODI century by a New Zealander
taking just 75 balls, with Cairns' knock also coming at this venue,
two seasons ago against India, a brilliant innings from McMillan
to truly signal his arrival as a true One-Day International
batsman after a long struggle, with an average that
languished in the low 20s for quite some time, but after this knock
and a strong 2000/01 season, has suddenly leapt up to 26.64
the final partnership between McMillan and Harris seeing a
whirlwind 112 runs added in just 97 balls, including 62 runs from

and amazingly, it's at last time for the final drinks break of the
game - such is the speed at which New Zealand has pushed through
its overs, that 39 have been completed in the time before the
        second break
Pakistan require a mere 166 from the final 66 balls, at a required
rate of 15.09 per over, one would say that's a fairly stiff ask at
this stage, and Inzamam and Moin are clearly resigned to the
        result
simply happy to accumulate, and try and bat themselves into some
form in the middle, which unfortunately has spelt the death of
this game from quite some time back
as Vettori and Harris just pushed through a bundle of tidy overs
without incident, after the initial sensational burst which saw

that brings to an end a 7th wicket partnership of 73 that more than
doubled the Pakistan score, bringing it some semblence of
respectability, though still a long way short of the desired mark

driven straight to Stewart at extra cover
45.4 Astle to Wasim Akram, OUT: and another one goes, Astle with a quick

        his should

balls, Moin swings it hard and high over mid on, Harris lines it
up at long on, taking it right inside the rope before
        overbalancing back over the line

he smartly throws it up in the air before stepping over and then
jumps back inside the rope to complete the catch, a great solo
double-team effort! the third umpire checks the catch, and indeed
he did it cleanly, super stuff
under the old laws last year before September, that wouldn't have
been out, and called a six, but just like the six from McMillan
that struck the rope earlier, the rules have changed - both in New
        Zealand's favour today!
Astle on a hat-trick, with Saqlain on strike, and last man in Waqar
Younis at the other end, a silly mid off in place

off stump, well beaten having a fiddle at it, Saqlain knew little
        about that one
46.3 Tuffey to Saqlain Mushtaq, no run, similar again, lovely quick
rising ball outside off stump, plays and misses through to the
        keeper
46.4 Tuffey to Saqlain Mushtaq, one run, driven up towards wide mid off,
quick single taken with the shot, Vincent fires at the bowler's

46.5 Tuffey to Waqar Younis, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
opens the face, guiding it down straight to backward point

struck low down on the pad, appeal for lbw from Tuffey and given
by umpire Cowie, looked to strike middle and leg, and probably
        hitting leg

New Zealand wrap up an amazingly comfortably 138 run victory, to
square the National Bank One-Day International Series 2-2 with one
        match remaining
the crowd chant and clap the New Zealand team off the field in
rhythm to a deep bass tune pumping away, in appreciation of a
comprehensive effort not seen regularly by the home team this
        season
the manner in which they completed the victory certainly pepped up
the crowd in the end, with 4 wickets falling within the space of
11 balls, after going 20 overs without seeing a breakthrough
it was a dominant performance from start to finish, with an initial
stutter with the loss of Fleming, but then Astle and Twose
kickstarted things with a century stand for the second wicket
after another couple of little stutters, it was firstly Astle and
McMillan, then the McMillan show solo with able support from
Harris, as he smashed the Pakistanis out of the game with a final
        burst
to secure his maiden One-Day International century off the final
available ball of the innings (take III, thanks to Saqlain), a
remarkable knock and certain puts him in prime position to take
out the Man of the Match award
Pakistan got off to a horror reply, with a slightly rearranged
batting order to accommodate Inzamam's injury, and they never had
any hope after being 5/3, 15/4 and 36/5, and only thanks to
Razzaq, Moin and Inzamam did they gain any level of respectabilit
Astle cleaned things up nicely at the death, taking three wickets
in four balls to round off a useful day after scoring 71, a
        welcome return to form
but there's no doubting who the Man of the Match is, Craig McMillan
receives the National Bank Player of the Match award for his
stunning 104 not out from 75 balls
he leaps well clear at the top of the National Bank International
Player of the Year standings, with 10 points, 4 points clear of
        second place
amusingly, he comments on the incident where he raised his bat to
the crowd upon striking the second six of the final over, to take
him to 97 - his partner Chris Harris had wrongly informed him he
        had reached his century!
