2nd ODI: New Zealand v Pakistan at Napier, 20 Feb 2001

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match scheduled to start at 2pm local time (0100 GMT)

welcome to McLean Park in Napier for the third National Bank Series
One-Day International between New Zealand and Pakistan
it's a fairly overcast day today, with high humidity, but there's
no immediate threat of rain, though there has been a fair
sprinkling overnight, leaving the outfield quite heavy, so it
should be slow to begin with
the pitch seems a fair one for batting, looks a good even surface,
but the other conditions may make a captain think twice about what
to do upon winning the toss
there's just one change from the two XIs which played the first
match at Auckland, and an enforced one at that, with Jacob Oram
twisting his ankle during pre-match warm-upsng he misses out on
playing in either of his first two games at his home ground
young local wicket-keeper Peter McGlashan, with some experience for
Central Districts at first-class level, and member of the
victorious New Zealand Maori side in the recent Pacifica Cup
        tournament in Auckland
Chris Martin makes an appearance in the playing XI after sitting
out the last two matches for the home side (against Pakistan and
        Sri Lanka)
New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has won the toss, and has
elected to bowl first, hoping that his injected pace bowling line-
up can do something through the air early on
but perhaps more importantly, deny the highly threatening Pakistan
pace trio of getting first go in the same situation
the crowd is a fairly reasonable one with 10 minutes to go before
the first ball is bowled, traditionally New Zealand crowds (in
particular this season) have been very slow in getting to the
        ground before the match begins
particularly for the day/nighters, on a weekday, there should be a
fair few more rolling in after 5pm or so, and the early estimates
according to ticket sales are most positive
the crowds have been rather poor throughout the home season this
year, with a lot of cricket to choose from in some centres, so
punters have been selective, and the performance of the home team
and sometimes the weather haven't been a help at times
today however we should get somewhere towards a full house, on this
modeest sized McLean Park ground, which always tends to produce
the best atmospheres for day/night cricket in New Zealand in a
        close-to-the-action ground
the players make their way out to the middle, with Saeed Anwar to
take first stike to the bowling of Daryl Tuffey from the
Centennial Stand End, with Imran Farhat at the non-striker's end
two slips, third man, backward point, cover point, mid off, mid on,
square leg and long leg in place for the left-handed Saeed facing
the right arm over the wicket Tuffey
0.1 Martin to Saeed Anwar, OUT: unbelievable start! just like Wasim
bowling Parore with the first ball of the opening match, Tuffey
does it to Saeed, playing all around a low full toss, taking the
        base of off stump

       Pakistan 0/1, Partnership of 0
       Saeed Anwar b Martin 0 (1b 0x4 0x6)
       Imran Nazir 0* (0b) CS Martin 0.1-0-0-1

the crowd absolutely erupt, you can't get a better start than that,
Saeed completely misjudging it, remarkable that both matches in
the series see a wicket on the very first ball
one suspects whoever wins the toss in the next match at Wellington
may want to avoid batting first!
Abdur Razzaq the new batsman, promoted up to No 3 after doing an
effective job in a different role in Auckland
0.1 Tuffey to Saeed Anwar, OUT: unbelievable start! just like Wasim

effective job in a different role in Auckland
0.2 Tuffey to Abdur Razzaq, no run, shoulders arms safely outside off
stump, the crowd 'ooh' hoping for a bit too much from Tuffey from
        his first two balls
0.3 Tuffey to Abdur Razzaq, wide: no run, and they're even more
disappointed this time, straying full and very wide down the leg
        side to get Pakistan underway
0.3 Tuffey to Abdur Razzaq, no run, stretches well forward down the
pitch, shouldering arms through to the keeper
0.4 Tuffey to Abdur Razzaq, no run, shoulders arms outside off stump
        once more
0.5 Tuffey to Abdur Razzaq, no run, shapes to play this time, but

        the keeper again
0.6 Tuffey to Abdur Razzaq, no run, full outside off stump, drives and
misses through to the keeper, big 'ooh' from the crowd as they
        nearly sniffed another one

2.1 Tuffey to Imran Farhat, no run, steps forward, stabbing weakly down

        outside off stump
2.3 Tuffey to Imran Farhat, no run, probes forward in defence to a
shortish ball outside off stump, dead bat defending it down in
close on the off side of the pitch
2.4 Tuffey to Imran Farhat, one run, shortish ball just drifting a bit
too far towards leg, nicely turned off the hip fine wide of the
keeper, Martin equally well around from fine leg to fire in a
strong return and prevent any thought of a second
2.5 Tuffey to Abdur Razzaq, no run, good shortish quicker ball, Razzaq
is hurried on a little, defending it down towards Vettori at
        square leg
2.6 Tuffey to Abdur Razzaq, no run, full on the legs, looks to turn it
down fine but misses, deflects off the pad and Razzaq looks for a
quick run but Parore's quickly across to his left to retrieve and
        stop them in their tracks

straight down to Vettori at square leg
3.5 Martin to Abdur Razzaq, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
looks to cut but it's a bit tight on him, chops it into the ground
from a bottom edge, dropping tamely in close on the off side
3.6 Martin to Abdur Razzaq, one run, full outside off stump, strongly
driven but can't beat a fine diving stop by Twose to his left at
mid off, just rebounds away from his hands, allowing the quick
        single to be taken

stump, very well square driven off the back foot through cover

economical overs, conceding just 12 runs - the 4th equal best
performance by a New Zealand bowler in One-Day Internationals, and
        best against pakistan
Tuffey returns, replacing Franklin at the Embankment End
47.1 Tuffey to Saqlain Mushtaq, wide: no run, full and wide down the leg
        side
47.1 Tuffey to Saqlain Mushtaq, one run, full outside off stump,
strongly driven down the ground on the leg side, not perfectly
timed, down to McMillan in the deep
47.2 Tuffey to Waqar Younis, one run, full ball outside off stump,
squeezed up on the off side, they set off for a near-suicidal
single, Vincent dives in from extra cover, his "dive pass" throw
goes *just* wide of the stumps with Waqar well stranded, could've
        almost run it in!
47.3 Tuffey to Saqlain Mushtaq, one run, full ball, driving and gets a
thick inside edge squirting away through to vacant short fine leg,
Franklin in to field from the deep
47.4 Tuffey to Waqar Younis, one run, full outside off stump, strongly
clubbed down the ground on the off side, down to Twose at long off
47.5 Tuffey to Saqlain Mushtaq, no run, very full outside off stump,
cramps Saqlain up nicely, can only squeeze it into the turf, back
on the off side of the pitch to the bowler
47.6 Tuffey to Saqlain Mushtaq, no run, full outside off stump, squeezed
away into the covers, Saqlain sets off for the run but Waqar stays
where he is as Vincetn swoops, firing it straight to parore,
Saqlain gives up mid-pitch to try and reclaim his ground

Franklin returns, replacing Harris at the Centennial Stand End
48.1 Franklin to Waqar Younis, no run, quick and full, Waqar has a wild
swing, trying to lift it over midwicket but misses, cannons into
the pad, and drops dead at his feet
48.2 Franklin to Waqar Younis, legbye: two runs, full down the leg side,
sneaks it away wide of Parore from the pad, Twose scampers after
it from short fine leg as it runs fine of him
48.3 Franklin to Waqar Younis, (noball) one run, high full toss, called
no-ball for being so, Waqar mistimes a pull shot, lobbing it away
through vacant square leg, out to Astle in the deep
48.3 Franklin to Shoaib Akhtar, (noball) one run, and another one!
Franklin trying too hard to york the batsmen, slipping out and
concedes another no-ball, fended away to vacant cover point for a
        quick run
48.3 Franklin to Waqar Younis, two runs, jumps down the track, swatting
a shorter ball away through wide midwicket in the air, Vettori
around to field from wide long on, can't prevent a quick second
        being taken
48.4 Franklin to Waqar Younis, one run, very full outside off stump,
jams it into the ground, getting it away through the vacant slips,
Tuffey in from third man to field
48.5 Franklin to Shoaib Akhtar, one run, full outside off stump, driven
down to mcMillan at long off
48.6 Franklin to Waqar Younis, no run, good quick yorker length ball,
forces Waqar to dig it out, straight back along the pitch to the
        bowler

49.1 Tuffey to Shoaib Akhtar, one run, driving outside off stump, gets a
thick edge to fly in the air through backward point, Vettori
quickly around to field from third man, Shoaib is keen for the
second, but is sent back by Waqar who wants the strike
it was very touch and go in any case, probably a very wise call
        from Waqar
49.2 Tuffey to Waqar Younis, two runs, full outside off stump, square
cuts, just squeezes it over Twose's head scrambling back at
backward point, they hurry back for two, taken easily in the end
as Vettori's throw from around at third man to the bowler's end is
        well wide
49.3 Tuffey to Waqar Younis, no run, swing and a miss outside off stump,
playing well over the top of it, through to Parore low down
49.4 Tuffey to Waqar Younis, no run, another swing and a miss! Waqar
lining up a spot straight back over the sightscreen, but he can't
get it there if he doesn't have bat on ball
49.5 Tuffey to Waqar Younis, one run, excellent full ball outside off
stump, squeezed down the ground towards Vincenta t long off,
looking for a second but they can't risk taking it on, too tight,
Shoaib will have to face the last ball
49.6 Tuffey to Shoaib Akhtar, OUT: and what a pearler it is, Tuffey
beautifully yorks him to dismiss Pakistan on the last available
ball of the innings, and to pick up a fine haul of 4-24 from his

Waqar Younis 22* (41b 1x6)

Pakistan are dismissed for a paltry 135, a very poor effort in the
face of a fine all-round bowling effort by New Zealand today, all
5 bowlers completing their 10 overs and doing it very tidily
in particular Tuffey with 4 wickets (and a run out), and Harris
bowling his 10 overs for just 12 runs (and taking the wicket to
pass Sir Richard Hadlee as the leading New Zealand ODI wicket-
        taker)
New Zealand's target will be just 136 from 50 overs, at a required
run rate of just 2.72 per over, but they must beware ... Pakistan
are the masters of deffending low totals, and in particular
        against the hapless New Zealanders
with a potent bowling attack, watch out for Wasim, Waqar and Shoaib
to be giving it their all to skittle New Zealand, in just over 50
minutes time at 6:15pm local time (0515 GMT)

Match State: Innings Break

the players and umpires return to the field after a lengthy dinner
break, thanks to New Zealand bowling out their overs nice and
        quickly
it'll be Adam Parore to take first strike to Wasim Akram bowling
from the Embankment End, with Nathan Astle at the non-striker's
        end
0.1 Wasim Akram to Parore, wide: no run, full and rather wide outside
off stump, Moin fumbles it trying to stop it to his left, doesn't
concede a run as it dribbles away behind him, on top of the wide
        already given away
0.1 Wasim Akram to Parore, no run, full and straight, firmly driven
back up the ground on the off side, can't get a run as Shoaib's
across from mid off to field
0.2 Wasim Akram to Parore, no run, shoulders arms to one angling across
        and away outside off stump
0.3 Wasim Akram to Parore, OUT: controversy! Parore props forward and
Wasim slants one across, finding a regulation edge straight
towards Afridi at second slip, who takes it very low down, the
Pakistanis celebrate but Parore stands his ground, believing it

0.4 Wasim Akram to Fleming, wide: no run, quick, short but far too wide
down the leg side, left through to Moin
0.4 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, full outside off stump, steps
forward into a defensive push up to Saqlain at mid off
0.5 Wasim Akram to Fleming, wide: no run, shortish wide ball outside
off stump this time, Wasim's a little off with his accuracy early
on, which is often the case, either dead-eye dick or a bit wild
0.5 Wasim Akram to Fleming, one run, quick and full, Fleming drives
falsely, somewhat beaten for pace, gets a thick outside edge along
the ground down to Waqar at third man to get off the mark, Wasim

1.1 Waqar Younis to Fleming, FOUR, overpitched first up and duly
punished, superb straight drive on the on side from Fleming, a
trademark shot, leant over it and caressed it with lovely timing
down the ground, straight of Shoaib at mid on
as a result, Shoaib is moved much straighter from where he was
        fielding after that shot
1.2 Waqar Younis to Fleming, no run, much better line and length ball
on off stump, defends down into the covers to Saeed
1.3 Waqar Younis to Fleming, one run, full outside off stump, strongly
square driven through backward point, just evading the dive of the
fielder inside the circle, but they can only get one as Wasim's
quickly around from third man to fire back the return
1.4 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, comes well forward in defence to a
full ball, stroking it straight back along the pitcch on the off

crowd urge them on for a second but wisely they don't go for it as
Waqar's in to field from third man on the circle edge
2.4 Wasim Akram to Astle, no run, quick shortish ball, Astle hops on
the crease in defence, squared around as he's struck high on the
pad, deflects down into the gully region as Wasim stifles a brief
        appeal, far too high
2.5 Wasim Akram to Astle, two runs, a bit straight and Astle picks it

runs from the remaining 25 overs, with 6 wickets in hand
it should be safe from here, though they have tied a match in New

time for the final drinks break of the evening
Wasim is replaced after a spell of 2 overs for 5 runs at the
Embankment End, on comes Imran Farhat for a debut bowl in One-Day
        Internationals
28.1 Imran Farhat to Vincent, FOUR, and not a very pleasant introduction
at that, a bit too short and powerfully pulled through midwicket,
        crashing into the boundary
down to just 13 needed from victory off 131 balls
28.2 Imran Farhat to Vincent, three runs, similar again, short ball is
pulled hard through wide midwicket this time, not quite as well
timed, and is able to be overhauled just inside the boundary,
bringing up the 50 partnership from 77 balls, the crowd go
absolutely nuts now that the game is
well sealed up, this is just the icing on the cake
28.3 Imran Farhat to McMillan, no run, shortish ball on off stump, cut
        straight down to point
28.4 Imran Farhat to McMillan, no run, flatter ball on off stump, back
cut directly to Saqlain at backward point
28.5 Imran Farhat to McMillan, no run, McMillan cuts yet again to a
fielder, playing it hard down to Afridi at point
28.6 Imran Farhat to McMillan, no run, tight ball on off stump, opens

        of the pitch
the chant goes up for 'we want a sixer!' again, the crowd are
restless, they want it finished grand style
29.2 Saqlain Mushtaq to Vincent, no run, flighted up full and straight,
driven quietly straight up to mid on
29.3 Saqlain Mushtaq to Vincent, no run, flighted up full and straight,
driven straight back down the pitch to the bowler
29.4 Saqlain Mushtaq to Vincent, no run, flihgted full on the legs,
turns it away fine but not past short fine leg
29.5 Saqlain Mushtaq to Vincent, two runs, paddles this one away
strongly wider of the man inside the circle, out to Wasim around
        from deep backward square leg
29.6 Saqlain Mushtaq to Vincent, (noball) one run, oversteps, flighted
up full and straight, turned away towards vacant wide midwicket
        for an easy single
down to six to win, the crowd wait expectedly for McMillan now on
strike to deliver on the last ball of the over
29.6 Saqlain Mushtaq to McMillan, one run, but McMillan prefers to play
it smart, working a shortish ball away forward of square leg for a
nippy single and doing it with precision as the fielder swoops on
it far too late to cause any heartache

very cosy indeed for the home team
30.1 Imran Farhat to McMillan, no run, flighted full outside off stump,
        driven straight to cover
30.2 Imran Farhat to McMillan, one run, full outside off stump, stroked
up straighter on the off side, Imran Nazir slides across to field
it but it rebounds away off his knee, conceding the single
30.3 Imran Farhat to Vincent, FOUR, just four to win and Vincent
finishes it off nice and neatly, cutting a short ball outside off
stump through cover point, nobody out in the deep to prevent it
crashing into the boundary and New Zealand come out victorious by
        six wickets with 118 balls
to spare, to level the National Bank One-Day Internatioanl Series
1-1 with three matches left to play, keeping the series well and
truly alive in fine style, dominating from start to finish and
rarely looking in any great bother, a big turnaround from
their Auckland performance which stopped well short of what they
had expected thanks to the Shoaib burst that rapidly curtailed
        their innings
today it was Daryl Tuffey who gave it back to the visitors, snaring
career best figures of 4-24 from 10 very demanding overs
he was strongly supported by all four other bowlers who kept the
Pakistanis in check, and despite regular hiccups in the chase, New
Zealand were always in control with a fair clip being maintained
        throughout
a confident unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 62 from 81 balls
between McMillan and Vincent finished it off, to ensure New
Zealand didn't start a slide from 74/4, with Vincent finishing up
with his highest ODI score by striking the winning runs
rightly Daryl Tuffey has been named National Bank Player of the
Match for his 4-24, setting the Pakistanis on the back foot right
