1st ODI: New Zealand v Pakistan at Auckland, 17 Feb 2001

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

welcome to Eden Park in Auckland for the opening National Bank
Series One-Day International between New Zealand and Pakistan
unfortunately the news isn't so good, with persistent rain having
fallen since early this morning, and though it has lightened up
considerably now, there's still very light drizzle falling at
        present
with 30 minutes until the scheduled start of play, there is no
doubt at all we won't be getting underway on time, and it is
highly unlikely we'll be starting today at all
however play has yet to be abandoned, despite incorrect radio
reports suggesting otherwise, with the match still able to get
underway by 6pm to fit in a 25 over per side match
we shall keep you updated until a decision is made conclusively one
way or the other, with 4pm the likely time of abandonment if the
weather continues as it is at present
one heavy bucketing from here would dramatically advance that time
of abandonment, but it has steadily lightened as the breeze has
picked up, so it may not come
to clarify the situation for those unfamiliar with the rain rules
in place just for One-Day Internationals played in New Zealand,
the officials will attempt to fit in a reduced overs match on the
scheduled day, but if rain curtails it at any stage on that
opening day, then play resumes on the reserve day if not enough
overs per side have been bowled to produce a result via the
        Duckworth/Lewis method, if necessary
in this case, it looks as though we are set for a complete
rescheduled start on the reserve day, played as a day game,
provisionally set to start at 10:30am if the weather holds
the rain has got a bit heavier, and the official word through is a
decision will be made in 10 minutes at 2:30pm local time (0130
        GMT)
there is absolutely no doubt as to what that decision will be, I'm
afraid folks we're about to pack up our bags and get ready to come
        back tomorrow
and the official word comes through, today's play has been
abandoned at 2:30pm local time (0130 GMT)
the rain continues to pour down at a depressingly-steady rate, the
crowd of approximately 30 people in the stands and a few more in
the corporate boxes quietly trudge out of the ground as they're
outnumbered by the fluoro yellow coloured security and management
        personnel
the ground has very good drainage facilities, so getting it
prepared for a start tomorrow will be an effort, but quite
possible if it abates tonight, the main pitch covers are spread
across the entire block, with portable ones covering the bowlers'
run ups and are being drained directly away from the middle
another attempt at a full 50 over match will begin at 10:30am local
time (2130 GMT) tomorrow morning, weather-permitting
it's a rather anti-climactic way to begin what shapes as a most
interesting National Bank Series, please join tomorrow morning
when we hope to bring you a much brighter start
until then, it's good afternoon from CricInfo at a very damp Eden
        Park in Auckland

Match State: Match rescheduled to start at 10:30am local time (2130 GMT) on reserve day

welcome to Eden Park in Auckland for the opening National Bank
Series One-Day International between New Zealand and Pakistan,
        take two
we're happy to bring you far better news of the state of play for
today, as the weather has certainly come to the party, it's a
brilliantly sunny day with no clouds for miles
it's a stark contrast with yesterday's drab overhead, damp
underfoot and rather precipitous in-between conditions, and they
don't seem to have affected us getting ready for a start on time
        at 10:30am local time
the outfield is looking a picture, though it may be a bit slow to
begin with, and the only thing that genuinely suggests there's
been rain here overnight is the adjacent wicket block, which is
probably being prepared for the Test here next month
Pakistan captain Moin Khan has won the toss, and elected to bowl
first, on what looks a pretty hard and flat looking deck, but one
which they must be looking to rely on early juice from sitting
under the covers for well over a day, along with the more th
the New Zealanders have taken the same playing XI which finally
stopped their bad run of losses, when they defeated Sri Lanka in
the final match at Christchurch six days ago, with Chris Martin
        again 12th man
for Pakistan, young opener Imran Farhat is to make his One-Day
International debut, taking another young Imran's place at the top
of the order, Nazir, who is their 12th man for today
Saeed Anwar, Shoaib Akhtar and Waqar Younis (making his 200th
appearance today) are all back from missing the third One-Day
        International against England at Rawalpindi
the players make their way out on to the field, it'll be Adam
Parore to take first strike to Wasim Akram, with Nathan Astle at
        the non-striker's end
just one slip in place, with a gully, third man, point, cover, mid
off, mid on, square leg and long leg in place for the right handed
on strike to the left arm over the wicket Wasim Akram
0.1 Wasim Akram to Parore, OUT: unbelievable start! shortish ball
angling across him, jumps to off stump to cut down on it, only
succeeds in dragging a thick edge straight back on to his leg
start, remarkable start to the series

New Zealand 0/1, Partnership of 0
       AC Parore b Wasim Akram 0 (1b 0x4 0x6)
       NJ Astle 0* (0b) Wasim Akram 0.1-0-0-1

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming walks to the wicket, as the
smallish shell-shocked crowd try to get to grips with the wake-up
        call
0.2 Wasim Akram to Fleming, wide: no run, wide outside off stump,
shoulders arms through to the keeper
0.2 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, shoulders arms outside off stump
again to another widish ball, this one not quite so bad, swinging
        much further away
yet another delay between balls this over, as a vehicle with a
flashing light is parked behind the sightscreen and is ignoring
waves and calls to get it moved
0.3 Wasim Akram to Fleming, one run, shortish straight ball, tucks it
off his hip down towards square leg, a misfield allows them to
        scoot through for the single
0.4 Wasim Akram to Astle, no run, shuffles right back and across to off
stump, leaves alone through to the keeper
0.5 Wasim Akram to Astle, one run, tight ball on off stump, tapped down
into the covers for a quick single with the shot to get off the
        mark
0.6 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, stretches well forward, shouldering
        arms through to the keeper

it'll be Waqar Younis to open up from the Dominion Road End
two slips, a rather square gully, point, extra cover, mid on,
square leg, long leg and third man in place
1.1 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, leaves alone a shortish ball well
        outside off stump
1.2 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, shortish ball on off stump, defends
straight down to Farhat in the gully
1.3 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, quick ball outside off stump, cuts
and misses well over the top of it, taken low from the keeper
1.4 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, full and straight, driven firmly
from the toes straight to Shoaib at shortish extra cover
1.5 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, hops on the crease to defend a
shortish ball with a dead bat down into the pitch
1.6 Waqar Younis to Astle, one run, full down the leg side, just sneaks
it around the corner down to Wasim at long leg

End of over 2 (1 run) New Zealand 4/1 (RR: 2.00)
Waqar Younis 1-0-1-0 - Dominion Road End
NJ Astle 2* (8b) SP Fleming 1* (3b)

2.1 Wasim Akram to Astle, two runs, shortish straight ball, tucked away
wide of mid on for a leisurely two as Saqlain chases just outside
        the circle
2.2 Wasim Akram to Astle, no run, shortish ball on off stump, tapped
down into the covers, loud call of 'no!' from Astle as cover
        swoops across to field
2.3 Wasim Akram to Astle, no run, angling down the leg side, clipped
off the pad straight through to the keeper, no great appeals as
        it's rather clear
2.4 Wasim Akram to Astle, two runs, shortish ball outside off stump,
cut down into the ground just backward of point, Farhat has to
turn and chase as Razzaq charges around to field from third man
2.5 Wasim Akram to Astle, FOUR, strays down the leg side and is picked
off neatly, strongly clipped through backward square leg and
there's no chance for Waqar down at long leg to field
2.6 Wasim Akram to Astle, one run, again just a bit too straight,
turned away to vacant midwicket for an easy single, both batsmen
quickly signal in the negative to one another for thoughts of a
        second

End of over 3 (9 runs) New Zealand 13/1 (RR: 4.33)
Wasim Akram 2-0-12-1 (1w) - Sandringham Road End
NJ Astle 11* (14b 1x4) SP Fleming 1* (3b)

a good over for New Zealand as Astle picked off Wasim with a little
degree of confidence, given the amount of movement present in the
        early overs
3.1 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, but perhaps not quite as confident
against Waqar, drive and miss outside off stump to one that swings
a fair way away from the outside edge
3.2 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, shortish straight ball on off stump,
tapped away towards point, Yousuf rolling to his left to stop it
3.3 Waqar Younis to Astle, FOUR, overpitched on the legs, strongly
picked off them though not far wide of a diving Saeed at square
        leg
3.4 Waqar Younis to Astle, one run, shortish ball outside off stump,
slashes at it and gets a thick edge that flies in the air down
towards third man, palmed down on the bounce by the third man
        fielder
3.5 Waqar Younis to Fleming, one run, forward to one outside off stump,
dropping it down in close square on the leg side, placing it well
short of the field for a well taken quick single
3.6 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, hops on the crease, playing and
missing at a slower shortish ball outside off stump, Moin
awkwardly stops on the bounce on his knees

End of over 4 (6 runs) New Zealand 19/1 (RR: 4.75)
Waqar Younis 2-0-7-0 - Dominion Road End
SP Fleming 2* (4b) NJ Astle 16* (19b 2x4)

yet another delay as there's a distraction behind the sightscreen
        disturbing the batsman
4.1 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, shoulders arms to a widish ball
outside off stump through to the keeper
4.2 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, shuffles inside the line of one
angling down leg, plays and misses, but not called a wide as he
over-accentuated the width by his movement
4.3 Wasim Akram to Fleming, legbye: one run, straight ball, tries to
whip it away off the legs but is taken on the thigh pad, drops
down dead in close on the leg side, good quick run taken as the
        field is slower to react
4.4 Wasim Akram to Astle, legbye: one run, angling down the leg side,
tries to flick it away but brushes the pad, dropping down to the
diving Moin's left, can't regather it quickly enough to prevent a
        fast leg bye being taken
unbelievably we have another delay as there's a distraction behind
        the sightscreen
4.5 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, forward, pushed straight up towards
        mid off in defence
4.6 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, stretches well forward, going for
an expansive straight drive but is beaten for swing, through to
        the keeper

End of over 5 (2 runs, maiden) New Zealand 21/1 (RR: 4.20)
Wasim Akram 3-1-12-1 (1w) - Sandringham Road End
NJ Astle 16* (20b 2x4) SP Fleming 2* (9b)

5.1 Waqar Younis to Astle, no run, shortish straight ball, Astle rocks
back and pulls hard but doesn't time it perfectly, enough time for
Saeed to shuffle to his left to field at square leg
5.2 Waqar Younis to Astle, FOUR, powerfully struck on the up outside
off stump, the bounce defeats Shoaib at extra cover, and once it
beats the infield in the first 15 overs on this ground, there's no
        hope of saving the boundary
5.3 Waqar Younis to Astle, OUT: but Waqar immediately extracts his
revenge, driving outside off stump and gets the simplest of nicks
straight through to the keeper, it was reasonably full and not
moving as much as the rest, which may have done Astle

Roger Twose the new batsman to the crease
5.4 Waqar Younis to Twose, no run, a beaut! quick short rising ball
outside off stump, Twose flinches on the crease, just staying
inside it as it fizzes past the outside edge through to the keeper
5.5 Waqar Younis to Twose, no run, stretches well forward compactly
defending one on off stump, firmly played up to Razzaq at mid off
5.6 Waqar Younis to Twose, legbye: one run, half forward, taken on the
pad by a quickish ball on off stump, huge appeal for lbw from the
bowler though not quite as strongly supported by his team-mates,
Fleming smartly calls Twose through for the leg bye as it drops
down in close on the off side

End of over 6 (5 runs) New Zealand 26/2 (RR: 4.33)
Waqar Younis 3-0-11-1 - Dominion Road End
RG Twose 0* (3b) SP Fleming 2* (9b)

6.1 Wasim Akram to Twose, no run, tight ball on off stump, watchfully
defended from the crease straight back down the pitch to the
        bowler
6.2 Wasim Akram to Twose, OUT: and another one bites the dust! pushing
meekly from the crease, presents the full face and Wasim simply
hones in on the outside edge, flying away low down to Afridi who
makes a fine diving catch to his right at second slip

New Zealand in big early trouble as the top two One-Day
International wicket-takers wreck havoc on the home team once more
       Craig McMillan the new batsman
6.3 Wasim Akram to McMillan, no run, oooh dear, what a start for
McMillan, chopping down on a full ball outside off stump, and
getting a thick edge to squirt between his legs out to Yousuf at
square leg! very lucky stuff indeed
6.4 Wasim Akram to McMillan, no run, beaten! a good ball angling away
outside off stump, fizzing past the outside edge through to the
        keeper
6.5 Wasim Akram to McMillan, legbye: one run, straight ball swinging
back in, appeal for lbw as it takes the pad but umpire Bowden
adjudges it going well down leg, drops down into the leg side for
        a quick run
6.6 Wasim Akram to Fleming, one run, angling down the leg side, turned
down to long leg to retain the strike

End of over 7 (2 runs) New Zealand 28/3 (RR: 4.00)

7.1 Waqar Younis to Fleming, legbye: one run, hops on the crease, taken
high on the pad and drops down towards square leg, quick run taken
as it's played well short of square leg
7.2 Waqar Younis to McMillan, one run, squared around in defence by a
quick straight ball, opens the face late to run it down to Saqlain
at third man to get off the mark
7.3 Waqar Younis to Fleming, no run, looking to drive a full ball
outside off stump, swings back in late to take the front pad,
sharp shout for lbw from Waqar but it struck just outside the line
of off stump, drops down towards Shoaib at mid on
7.4 Waqar Younis to Fleming, no run, shortish straight ball, turned
straight down to Yousuf at square leg
7.5 Waqar Younis to Fleming, no run, forward, defends from the crease
        into the covers
7.6 Waqar Younis to Fleming, legbye: one run, angling down the leg
side, brushes the pad through to Moin diving to his right but it
travels too quickly to stop fully, Saqlain around from fine leg to
        field

End of over 8 (3 runs) New Zealand 31/3 (RR: 3.88)

SP Fleming 3* (15b) CD McMillan 1* (4b)

8.1 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, stabs forward in defence from the
crease to a sharp ball outside off stump, just withdrawing the
blade inside the line of it late as it swings away
8.2 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, shortish straight ball, turns on
the crease to work it down to Saeed at square leg
8.3 Wasim Akram to Fleming, wide: no run, very wide ball outside off
stump, stretches forward to leave it well alone to Moin taking it
low down in front of first slip
8.3 Wasim Akram to Fleming, one run, forward to a straight ball on off
stump, taps it into the ground towards backward square leg,
hesitation initially before they scoot through for the tight quick
run, the shy at the stumps at the keeper's end from Saeed misses
        as McMillan is through
8.4 Wasim Akram to McMillan, no run, beaten! brings yet more 'oooh's
from the crowd as McMillan plays away from his body late, angling
well away across the right hander through to the keeper
8.5 Wasim Akram to McMillan, no run, defends a shortish straight ball
from the crease, pushing up towards Shoaib at mid off
8.6 Wasim Akram to McMillan, no run, full outside off stump, strongly
punched into the ground and straight up to extra cover, some poor
members of the crowd sigh as they think another wicket as fallen

SP Fleming 4* (18b) CD McMillan 1* (7b)

9.1 Waqar Younis to Fleming, one run, shortish ball outside off stump,
firmly steered away backward of point, quick single taken as
McMillan is a bit slow to get off the mark, just beating the shy
from Saeed at the stumps home as it goes well wide
9.2 Waqar Younis to McMillan, no run, more tricky times for McMillan,
playing all around a quick straight one coming back in and
straightening, huge appeal for lbw quickly turned down by umpire
Hill, the replays suggesting McMillan should buy him a 'big
benefit of the doubt' beer after
       the game tonight
9.3 Waqar Younis to McMillan, no run, full outside off stump, firmly
driven straight up to Shoaib at wide mid off
9.4 Waqar Younis to McMillan, no run, tight ball moving back on from a
shortish length on off stump, cramped up for room, hopping on the
crease to defend down towards Yousuf at point
9.5 Waqar Younis to McMillan, no run, straight ball watchfully driven
firmly straight up to Razzaq at mid on
9.6 Waqar Younis to McMillan, FOUR, shortish ball just sent down a bit
too straight, McMillan neatly flicks it very fine off the hip, no
chance for Wasim who gives up the chase from long leg

alone outside off stump through to the keeper
10.2 Wasim Akram to Fleming, wide: no run, quick and full, but angling
down the leg side, Fleming tries to pick it off but misses, will
        take the bonus run instead
10.2 Wasim Akram to Fleming, wide: no run, shortish ball outside off
stump, but again far too wide as Fleming plays and misses quietly
        wafting at it
10.2 Wasim Akram to Fleming, one run, shortish straight ball, tapped
down to vacant midwicket for an easy single, a bit of a misfield
doesn't tempt them to try on a second at this stage
10.3 Wasim Akram to McMillan, one run, fuller ball outside off stump,
firmly driven straight to Farhat in the covers, sends in a
terrible throw to the keeper coming up to the stumps, and concedes
an overthrow down to Waqar at third man
10.4 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, angling down the leg side, tries to
clip it away but misses through to Moin who takes low down to his
        right
10.5 Wasim Akram to Fleming, no run, full and straight, firmly clipped
along the ground straight to Farhat at square leg
10.6 Wasim Akram to Fleming, one run, full outside off stump, strongly
driven wide of mid off, Saeed only half stops to his right and
they scurry through for the quick run as he palms it down in front
        of him

11.1 Waqar Younis to Fleming, FOUR, full and straight, superbly straight
driven back along the pitch back past the bowler, a fair chase by
Razzaq from mid off comes to no fruition as it's too well timed
over the outfield to the rope
11.2 Waqar Younis to Fleming, no run, shortish straight ball, drives
strongly back down the pitch from the crease again, but this time
Waqar gets a hand to it, slowing its pace up towards Shoaib at
        straight mid on
11.3 Waqar Younis to Fleming, no run, straight ball on off stump,
quietly defended from the crease up towards Shoaib at mid on
11.4 Waqar Younis to Fleming, wide: no run, quick short ball angling
down the leg side, Fleming just plays inside it as he tried to
flick it away, but was only ever going to get a glove on it

15.3 Shoaib Akhtar to McMillan, no run, quick, full and straighter,
turned off the legs straight to Farhat at square leg
15.4 Shoaib Akhtar to McMillan, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump, at

16.1 Saqlain Mushtaq to McMillan, one run, flighted up full and straight
on the toes, driven down to Razzaq at long on
that brings up the 50 partnership from just 60 balls, a fine effort
considering the early trouble New Zealand were in when these two
        came together
16.2 Saqlain Mushtaq to Fleming, one run, flighted up outside off stump,
steered away towards cover point to work it for a quick single

bulky frame, the outfield helps him overhaul it

        away into the covers

17.2 Shoaib Akhtar to McMillan, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump,
powerfully slammed through the wide open gap at extra cover, once
more taking to Shoaib if he bowls too full outside off stump

peculiar batting failure with plenty of overs to spare and going
        at
a rather handy run rate, Shoaib the undeniable star, ripping
through the bottom half of the batting order with imperious
        precision

just 4 runs from the last 4 overs, 9 from the last 6 as Pakistan
quietly slide along content with their position at just one down,
interesting approach given the fine hitting displays from
Jayasuriya and Streak here in the last two matches to clean the
New Zealanders up with the short square boundaries
23.1 Vettori to Abdur Razzaq, no run, very slow short pitched delivery
sits up to be punished, but Razzaq has forgotten how to smash a
ball at the moment, and completely fails to time it, playing into
the ground straight to Harris at cover
23.2 Vettori to Abdur Razzaq, one run, shortish ball outside off stump,
runs it away through backward point, out to Vincent in the deep
23.3 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, SIX, flighted up, Saeed finally decides to
take control of the situation, dancing down the track to pick it
up over midwicket, just landing over the boundary, a good clean
        hit
23.4 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, one run, turning down the leg side, turned
around the corner wide of short fine leg for an easy single
23.5 Vettori to Abdur Razzaq, no run, flighted full outside off stump,
strongly driven straight up to Oram at mid off
23.6 Vettori to Abdur Razzaq, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
leaves alone through to the keeper as it turns away

the six earlier in the over brought up the 50 partnership off 120
        balls
24.1 Astle to Saeed Anwar, FOUR, shortish ball outside off stump,
sweetly back cut using the pace of the ball, steered fine of
Harris at backward point, and too well timed for Oram fielding at
        third man to stop it
24.2 Astle to Saeed Anwar, no run, full and straight, firmly driven back
up on the leg side of the pitch, Astle quickly across to do his
        own fielding
24.3 Astle to Saeed Anwar, no run, reaching well forward, firmly pushes
in defence up to Fleming at mid off
24.4 Astle to Saeed Anwar, two runs, full on leg stump, neatly clipped
away through backward square leg, Tuffey charges around from much
squarer in the deep, making a good sliding save inside the
        boundary rope
24.5 Astle to Saeed Anwar, no run, full outside off stump, tamely pushed
back down the pitch on the off side to Astle
24.6 Astle to Saeed Anwar, one run, shortish ball angling on off stump,
glanced away down to Franklin at fine leg

15 runs coming from the last two overs, Pakistan, in particular
Saeed, picking things up well now as the current rate rejoins the
required at exactly 3 per over
time for a drinks break with Pakistan 75 off their first 25 overs,
needing exactly same from the other half off the rest of the
innings, with 9 wickets in hand
25.1 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, no run, flighted up very full on off stump,
turns it away to Harris at widish midwicket
25.2 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, no run, stretches well forward in defence
outside off stump, turns into the front pad and balloons up on the
leg side, Parore darts across and takes the catch, a fair appeal
comes from bowler and keeper but they quickly give up, clearly no
        sign of bat there
25.3 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, no run, flighted up full on the toes,
turned around the corner to Fleming at backward square leg
25.4 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, no run, flighted up flat and full on off
stump, defends from the crease to McMillan in the covers
25.5 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, wide: no run, shortish ball turns sharply
down the leg side, this one is too wide for umpire Bowden to allow
25.5 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, no run, flat ball outside off stump,
hurries straight on, Saeed leaves well alone and it draws an
anguished cry from Vettori as it turns just past the off stump by
        millimetres
25.6 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, no run, shorter ball, turning down the leg
side, played straight down to Fleming at square leg from the hip

26.2 Franklin to Abdur Razzaq, no run, full outside off stump, drives

        preventing a run
26.3 Franklin to Abdur Razzaq, no run, very full and straight, driven
straight up to Astle at mid on
26.4 Franklin to Abdur Razzaq, no run, beaten! plays and misses at a

well outside off stump, misses completely as he played quite early
on it, goes straight on through to Parore
27.2 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, no run, flat ball wide outside off stump,
reaches a long way for it, cutting and missing, Parore immediately
goes up for a catch while Vettori is slow to join in, replays show
clearly no nick, Saeed Anwar just stands and smiles
27.3 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, no run, forward, defends back to the bowler
on the off side of the pitch
27.4 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, two runs, shortish ball turning down the
leg side, laps it fine, poor fielding by Franklin coming in from
long leg as he leaves it behind him, conceding a second run, which
        leaves Vettori none too impressed
27.5 Vettori to Saeed Anwar, OUT: so Vettori decides to do it for
himself, turning one in sharply from outside off stump, Saeed
played right back to it and ends up skittled right through the

44.1 McMillan to Yousuf Youhana, three runs, short ball sits up to be
hit, Yousuf smacks in the air safely through midwicket though not
with perfect timing, Astle chases it down from square leg, sliding
to save it just inside the boundary rope well, saving one run
just one boundary hit required for victory now, and 35 deliveries
        in which to find it
44.2 McMillan to Shahid Afridi, no run, not on this one at least,
defends a tight ball on off stump back down the pitch to McMillan
44.3 McMillan to Shahid Afridi, no run, charges down the pitch, now he
wants it over with, but gives himself too much room outside off
stump as it's very slow and wide outside off, ends up pulling a
bottom edge into the ground, tamely away to midwicket
Afridi laughs while McMillan gives him a few words of 'batting
advice', taking it seriously right to the very end
44.4 McMillan to Shahid Afridi, no run, full outside off stump, firmly
stroked back up on the leg side of the pitch
44.5 McMillan to Shahid Afridi, no run, forward to another full ball on
off stump, driven straight back to the bowler
44.6 McMillan to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, and there it is, full outside off
stump, dances down the pitch and strongly punched straight down
the ground, Twose is left for dead at widish mid off and Pakistan
complete a win by 6 wickets with 30 balls to spare

End of over 45 (7 runs) Pakistan 150/4 (RR: 3.33 RRR: 0/5 = 0.00)

a ticketed crowd of just under 15,000 depart the ground, though
considerably less than that were actually present today, most of
the tickets having been sold for play on the scheduled day
        yesterday
Pakistan wrap up a comfortable victory, down with clinical control
and holding back on the great flair they're capable of and will be
set to unleash in the remainder of the series at the right time
New Zealand progressed along at a fair rate throughout their
innings, but lost wickets too early to continue to maintain the
pace, though with Oram and Vincent progressing things well for the
sixth wicket, there was still hope
but the moment Shoaib Akhtar return to the attack, he spelt a very
quick end to the innings, taking just 21 minutes, and 2.3 overs to
tear apart the lower order, taking 5 wickets for 4 runs in the
        spell
including taking all 5 wickets in a span of 11 balls at the cost of
just 2 runs, and 4 wickets for 1 run in the space of just 6 balls
        - including two bursts of wickets on consecutive deliveries
a devastating spell, to complete his first 5-wicket haul in One-Day
Internationals, and incredibly doing it in his first international
        match since 23 April 2000
there was prodigious swing early on today, and plenty of turn for
the likes of Saqlain (and later Vettori), with the two 'W's down
to their usual business of troubling New Zealand batsmen on their
        home soil
the batsmen backed up the bowlers' performance to see through the
regulation victory, with Saeed and Inzamam in particular both
looking in very solid form after a good two months off
Razzaq performed a very different role than is usually expected of
him, promoted up to No 3, and played a genuine Test style knock,
holding up one end and making sure that quick wickets didn't
tumble to put pressure on the lower order, doing it well
interestingly, this is the last time this pitch will be used for
cricket at this ground, as it is now to be dug up, and a portable
block to be installed, which will be used for the first Test
        starting next month
and for all cricket on the ground thereafter, as it shares it with
the winter code of rugby, not a particularly great way for New
Zealand to go out on it, with their third straight loss here this
        season
that's all from CricInfo at Eden Park today on the reserve day,
please join us for the second National Bank Series One-Day
International from Napier, starting at 2pm local time (0100 GMT)
New Zealand are now already under a bit of pressure to keep the
series well alive, as if they they go 2-0 down again as they did
against Sri Lanka, it won't be happy times for the youngish home
team for the rest of the series
goodbye from CricInfo in a rather muggy Auckland, if you have any
comments about today's coverage, please send them on in to
