England and Sri Lanka play the first ever One Day International
Cricket Match at The Rangiri Dambulu International Cricket
Stadium.
The opening of Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium today, is an
historical event in the annals of cricketing history of Sri Lanka.
To build this stadium in 155 days, must be a unique record in the
field of construction, in the world.
Most of the world famous international cricket stadiums are built
in cities. They are all in cities. Rangiri Dambulla Stadium is in
the midst of a jungle. In reality, it is re-claimed stadium. It is
Eco-friendly. It integrates harmoniously into this age
old natural environment.
Dambulla, today is a world heritage site, famous for its rock cave
temple dating back to 85 B.C. The land on which the stadium is
built belongs to famous Rangiri Dambulla Temple.
All land from where one would hear the drumming in the temple,
which is on a massive rock, 200 metres high, was gifted to the
temple by the deed of gift from the king.
