VIGNE CUP SCORES by John Ward - 10 Oct 1999 Results of Mashonaland 50-over matches played on Sunday 10 October. At Alexandra Sports Club. WINSTONIANS 237/8 (50 overs) (A Flower 114*, G Makoni 27, S Matsikanyeri 26; G du Plessis 4/34, J Vaughan-Davies 2/31). ALEX 240/6 (48.2 overs) (C Gurr 28, A M Blignaut 101, E R Marillier 34*; A Maungwa 2/44). Alex won by four wickets. A superb century by Andy Flower was not enough to enable Winstonians to win the match, but they put up a good fight. Their main weakness was lack of bowling power, which was exposed by Andy Blignaut. The new Zimbabwean international player has been working hard on his batting, and he recorded his first century in senior club cricket to pave the way for his team's victory. At Universals. UNIVERSALS 195 (47.1 overs) (H Adam 33, K Adam 27, H J Hira 21, A D R Campbell 20, D T Mutendera 20; K J Davies 3/39). HARARE SPORTS CLUB 196/8 (48.2 overs) (N R Ferreira 76*, J Oldrieve 27, A P Hoffman 22; A D R Campbell 3/46, A Meman 2/36). Harare Sports Club won by two wickets. Despite the close finish to this match it was, according to Universals manager Max Ebrahim, just like a second-league game due to the absence of so many players from either team, due to various festivals and the President's XI match against the Australians in Bulawayo. Universals were missing seven regular players and Harare Sports Club eight, and the cricket was of a low standard. The critical factor was the batting of Zimbabwe Cricket Academy player Neil Ferreira, who opened the innings for Sports Club and batted through to the end. It was a valuable rather than entertaining innings, as he concentrated mainly on holding his end up and waited for the bad ball. He gave no chances, and his team would certainly have lost without his contribution. At Old Georgians. OLD GEORGIANS v OLD HARARIANS postponed. Both teams were so weakened by the unavailability of regular players that they were granted permission to postpone the match to a date as yet indefinite.
