Old Hararians v Universals Clive Ruffell - 5 March 2000 With both teams were badly depleted by national and provincial selections, as well as injuries, and were forced to field virtual second teams. Universals won the toss and opted to bat first, determined to avenge their defeat against OH a few weeks ago in the National League semi-finals. Universals started badly, losing both openers cheaply, but recovered enough to post 182/7 in 50 overs, thanks largely to an excellent 81 not out from Dion Ebrahim. The usual disciplined bowling from OH was not in evidence, with no fewer than 15 wides sent down in an extras total of 34. Normally, OH would be very confident of reaching the target of 183, but much depended on Eddo Brandes as the only first-team regular in the batting line-up. However, Brandes did not last long, and despite stubborn resistance from Butterworth, Universals were always on top and OH were eventually dismissed for 138 in 44.5 overs, a run rate of just over 3 runs to the over. It was the first win in the Vigne Cup this season for Universals, and only the second loss for OH, whose hopes of performing the double by winning both the national league and the Vigne Cup were badly dented.
