Alexandra v Old Hararians - Vigne Cup Matches
By Clive Ruffell - 12 March 2000

Rain and waterlogged pitches prevented any play in all but one of the Vigne Cup matches in the penultimate round of the competition. However, conditions at Alexandra Sports Club were deemed good enough for play in a top of the table clash between national league champions Old Hararians, and Alexandra, currently leading the Vigne Cup table.

Fortunately, a result was possible in this crucial Vigne Cup match, albeit with assistance from the dreaded Duckworth-Lewis method. Both teams were strengthened slightly from the previous week, with the return of both respective captains, Gavin Rennie and Trevor Penney.

Alex batted first, and as is currently the trend in local first league cricket, struggled to post a respectable score. Four batsmen managed double figures, but none were able to convert a start into a meaningful innings. As a result, Alex could only manage 147 off 46.4 overs, a low target for a side containing Warwickshire batsman Trevor Penney. Following the trend set the previous week, OH again gave away too many extras, with no fewer than 15 wides sent down.

Inevitably rain intervened for a short period after lunch, necessitating the use of the Duckworth-Lewis method to determine a new target for OH. The target was eventually set at 105 off 25 overs, which OH achieved with 4 balls to spare.

Next week sees the final round of the Vigne Cup, with Old Georgians hosting Alex, and HSC hosting Old Hararians. A win for Alex will ensure them the title, but should they lose, they could open the door for OH to pull off the double.
