Coca-Cola Singapore Challenge

Final: India v West Indies at Singapore, 8 Sep 1999

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Lara has won the toss and will decide to field
so no major change in terms of who is batting first
Lara thinks the early conditions will help his team bowling first
Tendulkar thinks he would have batted first had he won the toss
no change in the Indian team from what they fielded yesterday
the pitch is the same one as yesterday
true and good bounce, will assist disciplined medium pace and fast
        bowlers
the West Indian bowlers were too wayward to start with yesterday
and they need to cut down on the extras
Indian batting, on the other hand, looks pretty shaky
no change in either teams, Walsh will bowl to Teendulkar
0.1 Walsh to Tendulkar, no run, on the middle and leg, turned slowly to
square leg. there was more pad to that than the bat
0.2 Walsh to Tendulkar, no run, outside the off, through to Jacobs
Ramesh is the partner of Tendulkar
0.3 Walsh to Tendulkar, no run, outside the off, good bounce and nice
carrythrough, to Jacobs the ball was left alone
as you may be aware, Walsh got Tendulkar yesterday
0.4 Walsh to Tendulkar, no run, on the off, coming in. Tendulkar wanted
to turn the ball to midwicket but rapped on the pads
0.5 Walsh to Tendulkar, no run, outside the off, cutting in and
bouncing, rapped on the pads but high as Tendulkar shapes to play
it to midwicket, Tendulkar still not getting the eye in
0.6 Walsh to Tendulkar, OUT: outside the off, Tendulkar flashes hard,
gets a thick edge, goes to thirdman boundary, Bryan juggled with
the ball, about 5 times and eventually caught it!

S Ramesh 0* (0b)

this is a big blow for Tendulkar and India and a great start for
        West Indies
Bryan was positioned just 2 yeards in front of the thirdman
        boundary ropes
the ball went straight to him and he caught it with both the hands,
the ball spilled out. then Bryan kept on dribbling with the ball
with both hands, twice with his right hand, twice with his left
hand and once with both the hands and eventually caught i
and what a relief it was for Walsh!
1.1 Dillon to Ramesh, no run, outside the off, through to keeper
       coming round the wicket
1.2 Dillon to Ramesh, no run, outside the off, left alone
1.3 Dillon to Ramesh, no run, pitched up on the legs, firmly played off
the legs, straight to short leg fielder
1.4 Dillon to Ramesh, (noball) FOUR, no ball. throws loosely outside
the off, swung late and Ramesh pokes his bat, gets an underedge
and deflects the ball by a little bit beating Jacobs to fineleg
        boundary
1.4 Dillon to Ramesh, no run, outside the off, through to keeper
1.5 Dillon to Ramesh, no run, on the off, gets behind the line and
        defends back to the bowler
Ramesh has gotten out twice this series caught at short extra
        covers
1.6 Dillon to Ramesh, wide: no run, pitched on the off, swung further
away and declared wide as Dillon shows his displeasure with some
        expletives directed at himself
1.6 Dillon to Ramesh, no run, outside the off, without moving his feet
too much Ramesh tries to reach out to the ball and manages only a
thin bottom edge. the ball rolls to the off

End of over 2 (6 runs) India 6/1 (RR: 3.00)
M Dillon 1-0-6-0 (1w 1nb) - Pavilion End
R Dravid 0* (0b) S Ramesh 4* (7b 1x4)

obviously the West Indian bowlers have talked amongst themselves
and resolved to bowl fewer extras today and hence Dillon a bit
annoyed at himself for starting the extras count
Walsh now, to the next danger man from India - Dravid
       over the wicket
Dravid wants some adjustments to the sight screen
2.1 Walsh to Dravid, no run, on the middle and leg, deflected off the
body to Jacobs. shouts of catch-it but no damage

in and keeping a bit low. Dravid brings his bat down quickly and
        pats the ball down
2.3 Walsh to Dravid, no run, pitched further up on the middle, cutting
in sharply and raps him on the inner thigh pad
Walsh relying more on cutting the ball in rather than swinging it
2.4 Walsh to Dravid, no run, this time, outside the off, moving away
off the seam and bouncing. left alone
2.5 Walsh to Dravid, no run, on the off, pitched on the length. Dravid
comes forward and plays a hurried forward defensive back along the
        pitch
2.6 Walsh to Dravid, (noball) no run, had it not been a noball would
have been a wide. pitched on the middle and leg and swings further
in and goes down the legs
the ball slipped out of Walsh's hands as he comes to deliver the
ball and the slipped ball was well caught by Ramesh, the non-
        striker! dead ball
2.6 Walsh to Dravid, no run, on the off, played forward defensively

and plays a cut shot past point, to sweeper cover position

this is excellent bowling from Walsh, showing that given right
conditions, even in a hit-and-run one-dayer he can come up with
        extraordinary quality fast bowling
testing variations in line and length and bounce, keeping the
        batsman guessing all the time
King replaces Dillon and comes over the wicket
5.1 King to Ramesh, two runs, on the legs, turned past square leg and
they take a couple before the fineleg fielder gets around to the
        ball

unlike Dillon, King is bowling over the wicket to the left hander

extra cover - where his nemesis Perry is standing
5.4 King to Ramesh, one run, short of length, into the body off the

they make it in the end before Perry can reach the ball

point, Dillon running in can't prevent it though he gets his hands
