Carlton & United Series: Australia v Pakistan at Sydney, 4 Feb 2000

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

and top of the afternoon to you
Australia have won the two-up and have elected to wield the willow
        first
Australia are unchanged, so utterly no justice for Fleming again
whilst Pakistan have had a couple of swaps enforced on them - Abdur
is out with the injury he suffered in the 1st final, with Waqar
replacing him, whilst Inzamam suffered a mishap in training
yesterday, and is being replaced by Mohammad Wasim
apparently after the strain, Inzamam limped off the field very
slowly. I'm still not too sure how they diagnosed he was injured.
0.1 Wasim Akram to ME Waugh, no run, and into the thigh straight away,
good bounce, Waugh with a silly leave, but very obviosuly too high
0.2 Wasim Akram to ME Waugh, no run, bothers to play with the bat this
        time, defended
0.3 Wasim Akram to ME Waugh, no run, and more defence, ball dribbles on
        the off side
0.4 Wasim Akram to ME Waugh, no run, turned off the legs, direct to the
        square leg
0.5 Wasim Akram to ME Waugh, no run, again leaving it, no real need for
that, Wasim with good inseam just missing the off stump
0.6 Wasim Akram to ME Waugh, no run, patted away into the off side, and
the Australians are not off to a flyer

End of over 1 (maiden) Australia 0/0 (RR: 0.00)
Wasim Akram 1-1-0-0
AC Gilchrist 0* (0b) ME Waugh 0* (6b)

1.1 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, no run, defends the first ball from

1.2 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, one run, nudged off the hip and onto
        the on side
1.3 Shoaib Akhtar to ME Waugh, no run, fishing outside the off stump
rather uselessly, and he fails to get an edge on it
1.4 Shoaib Akhtar to ME Waugh, one run, single to short mid wicket,
Afridi picks up and throws down the stumps
1.5 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, no run, missing the glance, ball barely
        runs away off the legs
1.6 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, no run

End of over 2 (2 runs) Australia 2/0 (RR: 1.00)
Shoaib Akhtar 1-0-2-0
ME Waugh 1* (8b) AC Gilchrist 1* (4b)

2.1 Wasim Akram to ME Waugh, legbye: FOUR, trying to work it thru the

2.2 Wasim Akram to ME Waugh, legbye: one run, extras away to a flyer,
        this one runs behind square
2.3 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, wide: no run, and down the leg side
2.3 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, no run, poked away into the covers, soft
shot, no runs to be gained

        moan
2.5 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, no run, defended again
2.6 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, two runs, leaning into it and deflected

Wasim Akram 2-1-3-0 (1w)
ME Waugh 1* (10b) AC Gilchrist 3* (8b)

3.1 Shoaib Akhtar to ME Waugh, one run, upright defence, ball runs to
the keeper, and yet they still get a single
3.2 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, one run, on the back foot, defending
forward of the point, another single that seems risky but becomes
        too easy
3.3 Shoaib Akhtar to ME Waugh, (noball) no run, called by the bowler's
end umpire in case you're wondering
3.3 Shoaib Akhtar to ME Waugh, no run, pitched up and quick outside the
        off stump
3.4 Shoaib Akhtar to ME Waugh, no run, knocked into the covers again
3.5 Shoaib Akhtar to ME Waugh, no run, short of a length, aimed at the
body, defended safely into the off side
3.6 Shoaib Akhtar to ME Waugh, FOUR, how deliberate was that? chasing a
wide on outside the off, perhaps trying to guide it thru the
covers, instead it's a thick edge wide of the slips and too fine
        of the 3rd man

End of over 4 (7 runs) Australia 17/0 (RR: 4.25)
Shoaib Akhtar 2-0-9-0 (1nb) - Paddington End
AC Gilchrist 4* (9b) ME Waugh 6* (16b 1x4)

4.2 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, no run, passes outside the off stump,
        thru to the keeper
4.3 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, no run, defended down the on side, Wasim
fields in front of the non striker
4.4 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, three runs, turned off the toes and well
        timed thru the mid wicket
4.5 Wasim Akram to ME Waugh, two runs, played across the line, thru the
backward square leg, down to the fence where Shoaib fields
4.6 Wasim Akram to ME Waugh, no run, defended down the pitch again

End of over 5 (5 runs) Australia 22/0 (RR: 4.40)
Wasim Akram 3-1-8-0 (1w) - University of NSW End
AC Gilchrist 7* (13b) ME Waugh 8* (18b 1x4)

and again the Australian juggernaut is in its relentless motion.
Not a lot of positive body language from the Pakistanis, it all
        looks like a fait accompli
5.1 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, no run, played away to the axe man
5.2 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, no run, defended direct to Afridi in
        the covers
5.3 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, no run, wild ball from around the
wicket, pulled hard and pulled well, but direct to youhana at
square leg, DROPPED, nearly snared it at the second attempt
5.4 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, FOUR, merciless boundary, crashes a
        drive thru wide mid off
5.5 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, (noball) no run, another wild short
one, would've been a wide down the leg side until he noticed the
square leg with the erect arm
5.5 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, no run, defended onto the on side
5.6 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, five runs, prodded into the covers for
a quick single, make that a qui8ck fiver, the peg at the bowler's
end misses stumps and fielders, down to the long on boundary

End of over 6 (10 runs) Australia 32/0 (RR: 5.33)
Shoaib Akhtar 3-0-19-0 (2nb) - Paddington End
AC Gilchrist 16* (20b 1x4) ME Waugh 8* (18b 1x4)

6.1 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, FOUR, swing a lovely pull high over the
square leg, into the fence it goes
6.2 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, FOUR, all indications are it's going to
be a long long day for Pakistan, the on drive goes straight thru
the legs of the wide mid on, he chases but can't overtake it
6.3 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, no run, defended back to the bowler
6.4 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, no run, and more defence, Wasim again
doing all the work by himself
Wasim is complaining the batsmen are hitting the ball too hard and
have sent it out of shape
umpire tosses it back to him
6.5 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, FOUR, quite a smelly ball there,
overpitched and wide of the off stump, Gilchrist casually slaps a
        low cut shot
6.6 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, FOUR, yawn, boring, off drive thru the
        covers

End of over 7 (16 runs) Australia 48/0 (RR: 6.86)
Wasim Akram 4-1-24-0 (1w) - University of NSW End
ME Waugh 8* (18b 1x4) AC Gilchrist 32* (26b 5x4)

7.1 Shoaib Akhtar to ME Waugh, two runs, gilchrist with the sublime,
mark waugh with the ridiculous, cramped a shortish one, snares the
outside edge and it floats over the slips, just out of reach
7.2 Shoaib Akhtar to ME Waugh, one run, quick well judged single to the
        cover point
7.3 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, no run, around the wicket for the
        leftie, Gilchrist leaves it alone
7.4 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, no run, trying to work it forward of
point, misses and it takes him on the knee I think, had a slight
        hobble afterwards
7.5 Shoaib Akhtar to Gilchrist, one run, single onto the on side
7.6 Shoaib Akhtar to ME Waugh, no run, tapped into the off side for
        nothinfg

End of over 8 (4 runs) Australia 52/0 (RR: 6.50)
Shoaib Akhtar 4-0-23-0 (2nb) - Paddington End
AC Gilchrist 33* (29b 5x4) ME Waugh 11* (21b 1x4)

8.1 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, no run, defending to around about extra
        cover
8.2 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, two runs, ball races away from nothing
much more than the nudge thru mid wicket
8.3 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, no run, cutting along the ground, but the
        point traps that wily ball
8.4 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, two runs
8.5 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, no run, well hit down the ground but
Wasim snares it with his left and then hurls it back to the
stumps, hits the bat which was safely behind the crease
8.6 Wasim Akram to Gilchrist, FOUR, big loft way over the mid on, the
        run rate continues to rise

End of over 9 (8 runs) Australia 60/0 (RR: 6.67)
Wasim Akram 5-1-32-0 (1w) - University of NSW End
ME Waugh 11* (21b 1x4) AC Gilchrist 41* (35b 6x4)

first appearance of Waqar for a couple of weeks
and just when it seemed Pakistan take their usual eon with fielding
adjustments, it's actually the umpires holding things up with a
        tedious ball change
but it's only once the umpires have finished their little ritual,
        does Waqar bother warming up
9.1 Waqar Younis to ME Waugh, no run, thru to the keeper
9.2 Waqar Younis to ME Waugh, one run, square drive with a bit of thick
edge, and DROPPED, Azhar with the reflexes with his left hand,
        cannot cherry pick it
9.3 Waqar Younis to Gilchrist, no run, defending away towards the bed
        linen
9.4 Waqar Younis to Gilchrist, two runs, tonked over the mid wicket,
perhaps lofted a bit too much, square leg runs around and collects
        safely just before the gutter
9.5 Waqar Younis to Gilchrist, FOUR, hammering the drive thru cover
        point, quite an awesome shot
9.6 Waqar Younis to Gilchrist, FOUR, pulling over the mid wicket to
bring up a very slow 50, snail like stuff, really dragging the
        chain

End of over 10 (11 runs) Australia 71/0 (RR: 7.10)
Waqar Younis 1-0-11-0 - Paddington End
ME Waugh 12* (23b 1x4) AC Gilchrist 51* (39b 8x4)

10.3 Azhar Mahmood to Gilchrist, no run, defending into the off side,
        towards the mid off
10.4 Azhar Mahmood to Gilchrist, OUT: the red mist was so heavy you
could barely see the batsman, charging down the pitch at a short
one, then attempting a desperate cut shot, snicks it to the
keeper, quite an anti climax, no one really realised it was out

       Australia 74/1, Partnership of 74
       AC Gilchrist c Moin Khan b Azhar Mahmood 51 (42b 8x4 0x6)

11.2 Waqar Younis to ME Waugh, no run, hint of an outswinger from the
once great bowler, easily defended down the on side
11.3 Waqar Younis to ME Waugh, no run, carving it behind square, but a
good diving save prevents any runs
11.4 Waqar Younis to ME Waugh, no run, defending down the on side
11.5 Waqar Younis to ME Waugh, one run, utterly dismal, trying the late
cut and then inside edging it, Mark waugh thoroughly out of touch,

        there
11.6 Waqar Younis to Ponting, FOUR, hammers the pull shot, forward of
        square, zero clemency

Pakistan refusing to go to the drinks cart, instead standing in the

don't go away, the ground announcer implores, the presentations are
        coming up
a pretty close game that. Pakistan were well in it up to the
        tossing of the coin
after that, it all slipped away from them
the sponsor pays some compliments to the Australians
and awards the Man of the Match to Ricky Ponting for diving into
        the fence
<academy awards mode>unfortunately, Ricky cannot be here with
us tonight and Michael bevan will accept the award on his
        behalf</academy awards mode>
Wasim is up making some gracious comments, gets a decent cheer off
        the crowd
and perhaps a little surprise for some, but Abdur Razzaq is named
        Man of the series
gets himself a big mean motorbike to play with
the Australians all getting a winner's medal each, even Damien
        Martyn gets one
Waugh presented with the oversized cheque, and now gets the trophy
and to the delicate tunes of Garbage and then Green Day, Australia
        start their lap of honour
wooooooo, and now we have fireworks, don't get to see them very
        often in Sydney
the winners walk around the ground, touching various supporters.
The losers are no where to be seen
and that completes the day and the Australian international season.
Stay tuned on CI for the remainder of the domestic season, the Aus
tour of NZ and various other places, and then next season it's Aus
        v WI v Zim.
