Aiwa Cup Final: Sri Lanka v Australia at Colombo (RPS), 31 Aug 1999

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match scheduled to begin at 0830 GMT

Match is about to start. I couldn't have waited a moment longer.
track is a flat one, fully primed for a 600 run bore
sun is out, and there's no rain predicted. but we all know better
        than that.
Jaya tosses, Waugh calls correctly, and Australia will bat first
Waugh completely contradicts the TV "expert" by stating that 230
        will be a good score
0.1 Zoysa to Gilchrist, one run, and we're away, thick edge runs square
        thru backward point
0.2 Zoysa to ME Waugh, no run, dead bats it outside the off stump
0.3 Zoysa to ME Waugh, (noball) no run, bouncer and a good one, but
called no ball for the height
0.3 Zoysa to ME Waugh, no run, just a bit of mere defence
0.4 Zoysa to ME Waugh, no run, good ball, on the stumps, defended again
0.5 Zoysa to ME Waugh, one run, straying onto the leg stump, easily
glanced to the long leg area
0.6 Zoysa to Gilchrist, one run, working it off the knees and thru the
        mid wicket area

End of over 1 (4 runs) Australia 4/0 (RR: 4.00)
DNT Zoysa 1-0-4-0 (1nb)
AC Gilchrist 2* (2b) ME Waugh 1* (5b)

here comes fun, Arnold to open the bowling with his slow doozy
        offies
1.1 Arnold to Gilchrist, FOUR, around the wicket, easy peasy, Gilchrist
straight drives it on the on side
1.2 Arnold to Gilchrist, no run, tapped hard onto the on side
1.3 Arnold to Gilchrist, no run, chopped away into the covers,
Gilchrist trying to hit every ball as hard as possible
1.4 Arnold to Gilchrist, no run, quicker one, spins into the pads,
Arnold gives a mean expression that even Gillespie would be proud
        of
1.5 Arnold to Gilchrist, no run, one step down the pitch, gets all in a
        tangle as he misses
1.6 Arnold to Gilchrist, wide: no run, spins down the leg side, Arnold
had the guilts and turn to see if the umpire was signalling
1.6 Arnold to Gilchrist, one run, worked to the mid wicket, good safe
        run taken

End of over 2 (6 runs) Australia 10/0 (RR: 5.00)

AC Gilchrist 7* (8b 1x4) ME Waugh 1* (5b)

2.1 Zoysa to Gilchrist, FOUR, pull shot, swivelling on his left foot,
Mahela with some shocking fielding at deep square leg, allows the
ball to go right thru him
2.2 Zoysa to Gilchrist, no run, outseamer has Gilchrist fishing for it,
not enough foot work, Zoysa unlucky not to grab the edge
2.3 Zoysa to Gilchrist, FOUR, much better commitment on that shot,
slahing cut shot slides thru the backward point area
2.4 Zoysa to Gilchrist, no run, pitched up, perhaps keeping a little
low, Gilchrist dead bats it outside the off stump

        for the single
2.6 Zoysa to ME Waugh, one run, tucking it off the hip, direct to the

3.3 Arnold to ME Waugh, one run, works it around the corner, didn't
quite get the proper amount of bat on it
3.4 Arnold to Gilchrist, one run, worked off the stumps to the mid on
area, Arnold around the wicket to the kack hander

        jog a single
3.6 Arnold to Gilchrist, FOUR, clubs it down the ground on the on side,

with the bat thrusted in front of the body
5.3 Wickramasinghe to ME Waugh, no run, cutting outside the off stump,

outside the off stump down towards the deep backward point area
5.6 Wickramasinghe to Gilchrist, OUT: ball is pitched up just outside

and that will be the last decent sized opening partnership we see
from Australia for a little while, with the illustrious Test

held above the ehad, allows the ball to pass to the keeper
Australia needed a second spinner in the squad for today. Hard to
see Fleming, Gilelspie and McGrath all bowling 10
long delay whilst the groundstaff farnackle around with some black
plastic covering a roller or something that is shining into the
        batsmen's eyes
Moody incidentally not picked because he's a sick little boy
aha, the black plastic is covering a flea bitten decrepit looking
        super sopper

superb fielding from Jayasuriya, throwing down the stumps, Francis
calls for the Moving Pictures Umpire, but well in

a shot, just has to work on that ball-hitting skill, thru to the
        keeper

edge runs away to the 3rd man
32.5 Warne to Arnold, one run, sweeping
32.6 Warne to Kaluwitharana, FOUR, wheeee, this is fun, Kalu one step

       snort. Here comes Lehmann
Australia definitely undermanned in the spin department today
37.1 Lehmann to Kaluwitharana, no run, around the wicket, straight one
into the pads, Kalu mad ethe near-fatal mistake of expecting that
        one to turn
37.2 Lehmann to Kaluwitharana, one run, pulled thru the mid wicket, 10
runs until a magnificent Sri Lankan win

up a full 0.01 in fact. Australia need many more of those

38.6 Ponting to Jayasuriya, one run, short arm tuck/pull behind square,

39.2 Lehmann to Jayasuriya, FOUR, slapped over the bowler's head
       Sri Lanka on Championship point
39.3 Lehmann to Jayasuriya, SIX, big hit, pulled way over the mid
wicket, Jaya says no century for Romesh today, instead chooses to
        finish in style
terrific match by Sri Lanka, and a terrific innings by the man
        tediously dubbed as "Little Kalu"
great fielding and great spin bowling by SL earlier laid the
proverbial foundations, and left Australia trying to defend a
target at least 40 runs too short
lots of cheers and fireworks in the crowd. Australia doesn't end up
equalling the record for consecutive ODI wins, left 1 short. Stay
tuned, the pressies are coming up....
       consecutive ODI non-losses. whatever.
MC Tony laying down some lines.... introducing various allegedly
        important people on the dias
Man of the match neverously announced by the adjudicator as
Kaluwitharana. MC Tony insists on calling him "Liddle Kalu"
photographed with the usual large over sized cheque.
MC Tony says "Kalu" a few more times
Cammie Smith the match referee to decide the Man of the Series.
Seems to mention every bloody person who competed in the
tournament. A few in the crowd are falling asleep. Somehow arrives
at naming Gilchrist the man of the series.
now gilchrist has got the bug and pays mention to "Liddle Kalooo"
Steve Waugh invited to make a few excuses. Tony asks him what he
thought of "liddle Kalu" (and these are all quotes)
Jaya I: thanks Australia "they played hard"... "we have been
fielding really well"... "we have a good chance of winning [the
        Test series]"
a mere $1500 US smackers is received for winning the tournament.
        Plus a trophy.
Excitement has come and gone. hardly any crowd noise now other than
        some polite clapping.
Perhaps everyone has already forgetten who's won another
        meaningless ODI tournament.
Anyway... The Tests are next, back to the whites and the red ball,
all starts in just over a week's time. Full coverage as usual here
