1st ODI: India v New Zealand at Rajkot, 5 Nov 1999

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

India have won the toss and elected to field first, here at the
        Rajkot Municipal Corporation Cricket Ground
the openers Astle and Spearman make their way out to the middle,
with Srinath to open the attack from the far end
Spearman is to take strike, with 2 slips, third man, point, cover,
mid off, mid on, square leg and fine leg in place
0.1 Srinath to Spearman, no run, shoulders arms outside off stump
0.2 Srinath to Spearman, no run, defends away to backward point
0.3 Srinath to Spearman, no run, driven firmly straight to mid off
0.4 Srinath to Spearman, no run, worked off the hip straight to Jadeja
        at square leg
0.5 Srinath to Spearman, no run, back of a length ball, forced into the
pitch, Srinath fields on his follow through
0.6 Srinath to Spearman, no run, tries forcing it away off the back
foot, too close to him outside off, hit into the deck and away
        tamely into the covers

End of over 1 (maiden) New Zealand 0/0 (RR: 0.00)
J Srinath 1-1-0-0
NJ Astle 0* (0b) CM Spearman 0* (6b)

good start for Srinath, beginning with a maiden
Venkatesh Prasad to open from the Pavilion End with Astle on
strike, the field set is identical to that for Spearman in the
        last over
1.1 BKV Prasad to Astle, no run, angling down the leg side, Astle can't
        help it on its way
1.2 BKV Prasad to Astle, one run, driving at a ball a little short for
it, thick outside edge part way in the air, down to third man,
gets New Zealand off the mark
1.3 BKV Prasad to Spearman, no run, pushed off the thigh straight to
        square leg
1.4 BKV Prasad to Spearman, no run, defends up to captain Tendulkar at
        mid on
1.5 BKV Prasad to Spearman, no run, driven straight up to Joshi at mid
        off
1.6 BKV Prasad to Spearman, FOUR, too short and Spearman is quickly on
to it, pulled hard through midwicket, Jadeja gives up the chase
        early

End of over 2 (5 runs) New Zealand 5/0 (RR: 2.50)
BKV Prasad 1-0-5-0
NJ Astle 1* (2b) CM Spearman 4* (10b 1x4)

2.2 Srinath to Astle, no run, driven into the pitch, straight back to
        the bowler
2.3 Srinath to Astle, no run, change up ball, defends into the pitch,
rolls up slowly towards mid on
2.4 Srinath to Astle, no run, pushed off the back foot straight to
        Ramesh at cover
2.5 Srinath to Astle, no run, turned the wrong way trying to work it
through midwicket, beats the closed front edge completely, Srinath
races through as it deflects off Astle's thigh to the keeper,
great catch but no touch on it
2.6 Srinath to Astle, (noball) no run, oversteps, defends away to point
2.6 Srinath to Astle, no run, defends up to mid on

End of over 3 (1 run) New Zealand 6/0 (RR: 2.00)
J Srinath 2-1-1-0 (1nb)
CM Spearman 4* (10b 1x4) NJ Astle 1* (9b)

        fence
3.4 BKV Prasad to Astle, no run, worked straight to short midwicket
3.5 BKV Prasad to Astle, no run, and defended to the same man again
3.6 BKV Prasad to Astle, one run, slashes at a wide one outside off,
thick outside edge straight down to third man

End of over 4 (6 runs) New Zealand 12/0 (RR: 3.00)
BKV Prasad 2-0-11-0
NJ Astle 6* (14b 1x4) CM Spearman 5* (11b 1x4)

4.1 Srinath to Astle, no run, played straight up to mid off
4.2 Srinath to Astle, one run, cut strongly, good fielding at backward
point at least keeps it to just one
4.3 Srinath to Spearman, FOUR, pulled through backward square leg
4.4 Srinath to Spearman, no run, fuller ball, forced into the pitch and
        back to the bowler
4.5 Srinath to Spearman, one run, cut down to third man
4.6 Srinath to Astle, FOUR, lovely cover drive, forced between mid off
and cover and once it beats the inner ring inside the first 15
overs, it's near certain to be a boundary

End of over 5 (10 runs) New Zealand 22/0 (RR: 4.40)
J Srinath 3-1-11-0 (1nb)
CM Spearman 10* (14b 2x4) NJ Astle 11* (17b 2x4)

5.1 BKV Prasad to Spearman, FOUR, more stand and deliver stuff, one
foot straight down the wicket and cracks it straight back over the
bowler's head, everyone just turns to watch it sail past, a couple
of bounces and into the fence
5.2 BKV Prasad to Spearman, FOUR, Tendulkar readjusts his field,
bringing up fine leg inside the circle, and short midwicket in,
unfortunately for him, his bowler strays down leg and Spearman
helps it on its way fine of short fine leg
5.3 BKV Prasad to Spearman, no run, leaves outside off stump
5.4 BKV Prasad to Spearman, one run, forced off the back foot up to
Tendulkar at mid off right on the circle edge, runs to the shot,
well taken quick single as the throw misses, well safe anyway
5.5 BKV Prasad to Astle, one run, down the leg side, turned down to
        fine leg
5.6 BKV Prasad to Spearman, FOUR, smashing stuff! hammered straight
back past the bowler, this pair off to a flier

End of over 6 (14 runs) New Zealand 36/0 (RR: 6.00)
BKV Prasad 3-0-25-0
NJ Astle 12* (18b 2x4) CM Spearman 23* (19b 5x4)

6.1 Srinath to Astle, no run, shortish ball, defends down into his
pads, drops at his feet on the crease line, Srinath races up to
stop any ideas of a quick single

6.2 Srinath to Astle, one run, tucked off the hip to fine leg
6.3 Srinath to Spearman, no run, short, miscued pull shot, into the
        ground straight to short midwicket
6.4 Srinath to Spearman, FOUR, slashing cut outside off, thick edge
just over and wide of the slips, flies too quick and fine for
third man, big Prasad didn't move a step before it had made the
        boundary
6.5 Srinath to Spearman, no run, shortish ball, takes the bottom hand
off as he guides it straight to point
6.6 Srinath to Spearman, FOUR, Spearman on fire! smoking square drive
        forward of point

End of over 7 (10 runs) New Zealand 46/0 (RR: 6.57)
J Srinath 4-1-21-0 (2nb)
NJ Astle 13* (21b 2x4) CM Spearman 31* (23b 7x4)

7.1 Kumble to Astle, no run, worked straight to midwicket
7.2 Kumble to Astle, no run, forward, defends on the leg side of the
pitch, Kumble does his own fielding
7.3 Kumble to Astle, one run, driven down to long off, Kumble can't
quite get across to cut it off himself
7.4 Kumble to Spearman, FOUR, too full and Spearman latches onto it,
hoisted high over midwicket, pitches just inches inside the rope
7.5 Kumble to Spearman, FOUR, cracking drive, too good for long off
        running to his left even
the slip departs as Tendulkar has to go on the defensive
7.6 Kumble to Spearman, no run, defends back to the bowler

End of over 8 (9 runs) New Zealand 55/0 (RR: 6.88)
A Kumble 1-0-9-0
NJ Astle 14* (24b 2x4) CM Spearman 39* (26b 9x4)

        to cover
8.2 Srinath to Astle, one run, turned down to fine leg
8.3 Srinath to Spearman, no run, dabbed straight to point, Spearman
sets off for the run but is sent back wisely by Astle, there's no
run straight to the fielder there
8.4 Srinath to Spearman, FOUR, smashed backward of point, valiant dive
inside the circle has no chance of pulling in the racing ball
8.5 Srinath to Spearman, no run, defends down to short midwicket
8.6 Srinath to Spearman, no run, tries to turn it square on the leg
side, struck high on the pad

NJ Astle 15* (26b 2x4) CM Spearman 43* (30b 10x4)

9.1 Kumble to Astle, two runs, clipped through vacant square leg, long
leg has to run in and field, time for an easy second
9.2 Kumble to Astle, no run, defends to Bharadwaj at short cover
9.3 Kumble to Astle, no run, pushes away from the body, towards point

9.5 Kumble to Astle, no run, back cuts, straight to Jadeja again
9.6 Kumble to Astle, no run, props forward in defence, back to the
bowler, the first relatively cheap over for quite some time

End of over 10 (2 runs) New Zealand 62/0 (RR: 6.20)
A Kumble 2-0-11-0
CM Spearman 43* (30b 10x4) NJ Astle 17* (32b 2x4)

        leg
10.2 Chopra to Astle, no run, driven straight up to mid off
10.3 Chopra to Astle, no run, driven firmly straight to big Prasad who
        does well fielding at cover
10.4 Chopra to Astle, SIX, swiped hard and high over mid on, still well
inside the first 15 overs so the opportunity was always there if
        Chopra tosses it up
10.5 Chopra to Astle, no run, worked to forward square leg
10.6 Chopra to Astle, FOUR, overpitched, driven well wide of the lagging
mid off, it slowly gets past him and then races away

End of over 11 (11 runs) New Zealand 73/0 (RR: 6.64)
N Chopra 1-0-11-0
CM Spearman 44* (31b 10x4) NJ Astle 27* (37b 3x4 1x6)

off side outside the circle and the chasers can't pull it back
11.2 Kumble to Spearman, one run, driven down to long on
11.3 Kumble to Astle, no run, nudged straight to Tendulkar at wide mid
on, the only fielder forward of square inside the circle on the
        leg side
11.4 Kumble to Astle, no run, forward defensive to Bharadwaj at short
        cover point
11.5 Kumble to Astle, no run, firmly pushed to Tendulkar at wide mid on
11.6 Kumble to Astle, no run, drops it away in close on the leg side,
both batsman contemplate the run a couple of times, before finally
playing it safe as Kumble races forward to field himself

End of over 12 (5 runs) New Zealand 78/0 (RR: 6.50)
A Kumble 3-0-16-0
CM Spearman 49* (33b 11x4) NJ Astle 27* (41b 3x4 1x6)

12.1 Chopra to Spearman, one run, back on his stumps, spoons it in the
air part way inside the circle but it is safe enough as it goes
through to deep midwicket, and that's Spearman's 50 in just 34
deliveries with 11 boundaries, superb stuff on his One-Day
        International recall
12.2 Chopra to Astle, no run, driven firmly, but can't beat Kumble at
        mid on
12.3 Chopra to Astle, no run, back on his stumps, defends down back to
        the bowler
12.4 Chopra to Astle, one run, worked down to deep backward square leg
12.5 Chopra to Spearman, one run, tapped forward of point, easy single
12.6 Chopra to Astle, FOUR, Astle is enjoying the bowling almost as much
as his partner, sweet cut forward of backward point

End of over 13 (7 runs) New Zealand 85/0 (RR: 6.54)
N Chopra 2-0-18-0
CM Spearman 51* (35b 11x4) NJ Astle 32* (45b 4x4 1x6)

still two overs until the fielding restrictions are to be lifted,
it can't come soon enough for India at the present rate
13.1 Kumble to Spearman, FOUR, Spearman getting smart here now,
inventive paddle around the corner beats deep backward square leg
13.2 Kumble to Spearman, no run, turned to the man at a very short fine
        leg
13.3 Kumble to Spearman, one run, worked through midwicket, Tendulkar
back from wide mid on to field outside the circle
13.4 Kumble to Astle, one run, driven straight back past the bowler,
Kumble just failing to retrieve to his right, should've been two
in the run but Spearman was slow to respond as big Prasad fields
        at long on
13.5 Kumble to Spearman, FOUR, outside off, doesn't matter to Spearman
as he kneels to hoist it over midwicket, just pitches inside the
        rope, third umpire confirms
13.6 Kumble to Spearman, (noball) no run, oversteps, hammered again but
luckily this time straight to extra cover
13.6 Kumble to Spearman, no run, short ball outside off, cut hard down
        to backward point

End of over 14 (11 runs) New Zealand 96/0 (RR: 6.86)
A Kumble 4-0-27-0 (1nb)
NJ Astle 33* (46b 4x4 1x6) CM Spearman 60* (41b 13x4)

Tendulkar reintroduces Venkatesh Prasad, this time for a go at the
        far end
14.1 BKV Prasad to Astle, SIX, welcome back to the crease Mr Prasad said
Astle, down the track turning it into a half volley, cracked high
over Srinath racing back at mid off, lands on the roof of the tent
        at long off
a rather appropriate way of posting the New Zealand 100, in just 88
        balls
14.2 BKV Prasad to Astle, FOUR, Prasad not really enjoying much luck at
eoither end, sweetly cut but with plenty of power, too good even
        for third man
14.3 BKV Prasad to Astle, one run, shortish ball, drops it with dead bat
from a height, after a little early hesitation, Spearman calls
Astle through for the quick single, MSK Prasad has a throw at the
bowler's end but it only hits Astle
14.4 BKV Prasad to Spearman, FOUR, another half volley and Spearman
simply picks him up over midwicket, yet another boundary
14.5 BKV Prasad to Spearman, FOUR, oh what an onslaught, heaves another
across the line over midwicket, skied it a bit but it still easily
        beat the infielders running back
14.6 BKV Prasad to Spearman, OUT: unfortunately Spearman doesn't know
when to quit, and picked the wrong time to go for another one,
last ball of the first 15 overs and he lifts it straight down to
Bharadwaj at long on, who takes a good catch kneeling low

New Zealand 115/1, Partnership of 115
       CM Spearman c Vijay Bharadwaj b BKV Prasad 68 (44b 15x4 0x6)

End of over 15 (19 runs) New Zealand 115/1 (RR: 7.67)
BKV Prasad 4-0-44-1
NJ Astle 44* (49b 5x4 2x6)

a fantastic display of good clean hitting comes to an end, 60 of
Spearman's 68 runs coming in boundaries
the dismissal ends one of New Zealand's best opening partnerships
in an ODI for quite some time, possibly only comparable with the
mighty hitting of Greatbatch with Latham in support, in the
memorable World Cup match in 1992 when the pair belted 103 in
the first 15 overs against South Africa
Roger Twose is the new batsman
Tendulkar bringing himself on to bowl at the Pavilion End,
        replacing Kumble
15.1 Tendulkar to Twose, no run, back on his stumps, tries to turn it
down leg but into the pad, back down the pitch to Tendulkar
15.1 Tendulkar to Astle, no run
15.1 Tendulkar to Twose, no run
15.2 Tendulkar to Twose, wide: no run, very wide down the leg side,
        called as such
15.2 Tendulkar to Astle, wide: no run
15.2 Tendulkar to Twose, wide: no run
15.2 Tendulkar to Twose, no run, tries to whip it away down leg again,
too straight for that, off the front edge towards cover, almost a
mix up looking for the quick single, both get back into their
        creases safely
15.2 Tendulkar to Astle, no run
15.2 Tendulkar to Twose, no run
15.3 Tendulkar to Twose, wide: no run, another one well down the leg
        side

15.5 Tendulkar to Twose, one run, back on his stumps, pushed down to

15.5 Tendulkar to Astle, no run, again tries to turn a ball spinning
away from him down the leg side, taken high on the pad, goes to
short third man, big appeal for lbw by the bowler turned down
15.6 Tendulkar to Fleming, one run, driven hard down to big Prasad

N Chopra 3-0-25-0
NJ Astle 52* (54b 6x4 2x6) RG Twose 3* (7b)

17.1 Tendulkar to Astle, one run, driven down to long off
17.2 Tendulkar to Twose, two runs, cracking cut through to deep cover,
excellent fielding out there by Dravid sliding into it
17.3 Tendulkar to Twose, no run, defends back to the bowler
17.4 Tendulkar to Twose, no run, defends on the leg side of the pitch
17.5 Tendulkar to Twose, FOUR, cracking square cut through point, beats
the infield and no chance for Dravid in the deep, that posts
        Astle's 50
17.6 Tendulkar to Twose, no run, floats a straight one, Astle back on
his stumps playing back to the bowler

End of over 18 (7 runs) New Zealand 134/1 (RR: 7.44)
SR Tendulkar 2-0-12-0 (1w)
NJ Astle 53* (55b 6x4 2x6) RG Twose 9* (12b 1x4)

18.1 Chopra to Astle, no run, defends back on the off side, fielded by
Chopra, throws down the stumps at the keeper's end, pointless as
        Twose was always back
18.2 Chopra to Astle, wide: no run, wide down the leg side
18.2 Chopra to Astle, no run, off the pad down leg, keeper up to field
18.3 Chopra to Astle, SIX, Twose in on the act, keeping the run rate
flowing, down the track and cracks him high over long off, took
the gamble with the fielder inside the circle at mid off
a delay now as the ball has to be found, not a big ground here and
besides the Pavilion, it's ground-level tented seating all the way
around, at the rate we're going, it won't be long until someone
strikes it clean out of the ground
18.4 Chopra to Astle, two runs, pushed up wide of extra cover, quick
second taken by Astle as long off has quite some way to run in and
        around to field
18.5 Chopra to Astle, one run, driven straighter down to long off this
        time
18.6 Chopra to Twose, no run, turns it down the leg side, Astle can't
        whip it away

End of over 19 (10 runs) New Zealand 144/1 (RR: 7.58)
N Chopra 4-0-35-0 (1w)
NJ Astle 62* (60b 6x4 3x6) RG Twose 9* (13b 1x4)

19.1 Tendulkar to Twose, no run, floats it well up, very full, Twose
chops it away straight to midwicket
19.2 Tendulkar to Twose, SIX, almightily belted over mid off again,
        easily over the boundary rope
