Day 2: Lanka four runs short to avoid innings defeat

CARDIFF, Sunday - Compared to the first day when Sri Lanka were bowled out for 54, their lowest total in England, sanity prevailed in the batting on the second morning of their three-day tour match against reigning county champions Glamorgan played at Sophia Gardens here today.

Sri Lanka lost the solitary wicket of skipper Arjuna Ranatunga for 14 to go to lunch at 136 for 3 wickets, still trailing by 34 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

Marvan Atapattu and Hashan Tillekeratne, the last of the recognised batsmen in the present Test team held up the county's bid for victory and claim for the 11,000 pounds sterling offered by Vodafone, the sponsors of the county matches against the two touring sides in England at present, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

The Glamorgan bowlers who had held sway on the first day, could find no flaw in Atapattu's text book stroke-play as they tried valiantly to take his wicket. Defending the good deliveries and picking runs off the loose ones, Atapattu went to his second fifty of the tour in 107 minutes off 110 balls hitting seven fours. He was well set to score his first tour century being unbeaten on 80 at lunch.

With left-hander Tillekeratne offering firm resistance with some crisp drives and cuts to reach 27 not out, the two have added 88 in an unfinished stand for the fourth wicket.

Ranatunga's wicket was the only success for Glamorgan, when he failed to get to the pitch of the ball against Adrian Dale and was caught low down at extra cover to make Sri Lanka 48 for 3 in the eighth over of the morning.
