Minor hope snuffed out

Report in The Electronic Telegraph

27 May 1998

S Africans (283-7) beat Minor Counties (189) by 94 runs

WHEN the fourth South African wicket fell in the 27th over at Stone with 114 on the board, there was just a chance that the Minor Counties might emulate their celebrated victory against the West Indies in 1995, writes Ralph Dellor.

That was when Jacques Kallis joined Brian McMillan, in only his second innings of the tour, to put on 56 rapid runs. Both recorded fifties, and when Hanse Cronje weighed in with 58 from 38 balls, including four sixes and four fours, the game was as good as over.

The Minor Counties innings was torn apart by young quick bowler Mornantau Haywood, who took five for 36 in 10 overs. Resistance came in a last-wicket partnership of 40, in which Mark Humphries swung the bat with relish.
