Pollock rescues South Africans

S Africans 333-9 (50 overs; S M Pollock 116 not, M V Boucher 79; G Cooke 4-60). Ireland 72-2. Match drawn.

RAIN forced the South Africans and Ireland to abandon their one-day international in Downpatrick as a draw after Shaun Pollock had made an unbeaten 116.

The tourists reached 333 for nine in their 50 overs, and Ireland had scored 72 for two in 16.3 overs when the second downpour of the day washed out the game.

Despite their final total, the South Africans were in early trouble at four for two and 29 for three, with Hansie Cronje (2), Daryll Cullinan (0) and Brian McMillan (15) the early dismissals. It would have been 38 for four if Ireland captain Angus Dunlop had not put down Jonty Rhodes on 17.

A fifth-wicket partnership of 177 between Pollock, who missed last week's third Test with a thigh injury, and Mark Boucher put the visitors back in control.

Boucher made 79 off 71 balls, while Pollock's 116, off 132 balls, featured two sixes and 11 fours. The best Irish bowler was Gordon Cooke, who finished with four for 60 from his 10 overs.
