ENGLAND were outplayed in all departments as Australia went 2-0 ahead in the women's one-day series with a 64-run victory at Derby yesterday.
The Australian bowlers protected a modest 50-over total of 204 for six so well that three of England's top five were run out. Captain Karen Smithies top-scored for the second match in succession but her 44 from 71 deliveries proved too little too late.
There was little more to be said about the batting but Lucy Pearson will remember her first over in international one-day cricket. The first two deliveries from the tall left-armer were wides but her fourth ball trapped Australian captain Belinda Clark in front.
Australia had earlier accumulated a score that was to be well out of reach of England. Lisa Keightley anchored the innings with 59 from 99 balls and player-of-the-match Melanie Jones grew in confidence in making 58 from 75 deliveries.
