Women's cricket: Australia start as strong favourites

AUSTRALIA will be favourites to come out on top when the one-day series against England begins at Scarborough tomorrow.

The World Cup holders have been scoring at over five runs an over in winning all three warm-up matches since they arrived in this country. Karen Rolton epitomised Australia's batting strength with a fine innings of 119 against the South of England at Shenley on Tuesday.

The England bowlers will clearly need to find a tight line and length quickly. Sarah Collyer, 17, demonstrated just what is needed when the England Under-21 medium-pacer's 10 overs cost just 27 runs in the opening match of the tour.

One of three uncapped players in the senior squad, Collyer should get an opportunity in at least one of the five matches in the series.

England, still smarting after losing their world crown to Australia, have selected a 14-strong squad full of all-rounders.

The flat and fast Scarborough wicket should provide plenty of runs and there is no reason why England should not make their share.

Barbara Daniels and Kathryn Leng made centuries and shared a world-record stand the last time England played at North Marine Road, against New Zealand two years ago.

It will be a tough task for England but by no means a daunting proposition if they get the basics right.

The 50-over series moves on to Derby on Wednesday, Hove and Southampton next weekend and finishes at Lord's on Tuesday, July 21.

England Squad: K Smithies (capt), B Daniels, C Edwards; J Brittin, Claire Taylor, Clare Taylor, C Connor, K Leng, J Cassar, M Reynard, K Winks, L Pearson, S Collyer, S Metcalfe.
