AXA Round-Up: Martin-Jenkins makes difference

Electronic Telegraph

AN INSPIRED all-round performance from Robin Martin-Jenkins yesterday helped Sussex to secure their first Sunday League win against Yorkshire for nine years.

He took two for 12 at the top of the Yorkshire innings on a seamer-friendly pitch after David Byas had elected to bat and then scored a breezy 44 from 49 balls to put Sussex well on the way to victory.

And they must have been a mite grateful for his contribution as a threatened collapse briefly disturbed the status quo before James Carpenter and Keith Newell guided Sussex home with 16 overs to spare.

It is a result which leaves Yorkshire in danger of failing to qualify for Division One of next year's National League on the day that their Roses rivals secured one trophy and clasped their hands firmly around another.

Matthew Maynard, needing two to follow Hugh Morris as only the second Glamorgan player to score 5,000 Sunday runs, contributed 90 to an opening stand of 170 with Steve James to set up a 26-run win over Durham at Chester-le-Street's Riverside ground.

On their captain's exit, Glamorgan made a hash of their last 10 overs and there was cause for concern as Darren Thomas had suffered a side strain in the warm-up, leaving their already depleted attack a bowler short.

Tony Cottey picked up two wickets with his off breaks, however, as five of Durham's top six perished carelessly, leaving David Boon with a hopeless task in compiling his season's best Sunday score of 76.

At Taunton, Somerset, who won the toss, had struggled to 77 for four in 19 overs when rain washed out play.

Richard Illingworth, the Worcestershire slow left-armer whose recent form has been distinctly moderate, gained some consolation from figures of two for 10 in five overs.
