LIVELY bowling by Yorkshire's rising pacemen proved too much for the Devonians. Putting a dampish pitch to energetic use, the visiting seamers swept aside such resistance as the locals could muster, thereby settling the issue in an hour. Later the home captain's decision to take first innings after drizzle had prevented play starting promptly or the pitch drying properly was widely debated.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Paul Hutchison's opening burst settled the match. Swinging the ball from a considerable height, he broke through Devon's top order, a calamity from which the locals could not recover. Hutchison deserved his nomination as man of the match. Chris Silverwood and Gavin Hamilton also bowled with sustained hostility and Ryan Sidebottom jovially mopped up the tail.

Yorkshire had little difficulty collecting the runs, though their captain did fall to Stuart Macgill, who bowled his leg breaks skilfully as the pitch dried.
