Rain hits NorTel again

The inclement weather which has seriously affected the 1998 NorTel West Indies under 19 cricket series once again intervened and brought play to halt in the fourth round clash between Trinidad and Tobago and The Leeward Islands at the Queens Park Oval yesterday. And at 3.30 pm when umpires Camal Basdeo and Franklyn Blaize called off play for the day the visitors were restricted to 97 for 2 after 36.1 overs were bowled.

The Leewards sent in to bat were off to a very good start as openers Anwar Prince and Adlaide Lake posted 56 runs before the first wicket fell.

Former West Indies under 15 player Kenton Thompson operating from the northern end made the breakthrough for the home team when he bowled Prince around his legs for 19. Without any addition to the score leg spinner Kishore Lalchan struck when he removed Lake leg before wicket for 27. This brought in skipper Sylvester Joseph and he immediately decided to take on the home team's attack. The Leewards skipper struck two fours and one six to remain unbeaten on 28 when play ended for the day. In the first over he faced from Lalchan he struck the Clico Preysal spinner for a four and a massive six over mid on. But Joseph must consider himself very lucky as in in the very next over from the same bowler he had a lucky escape when he lofted a drive to deep mid off and was dropped by Ricardo Paty. Bowling so far for Trinidad and Tobago Asif Jan Dave Mohammed and Kenton Thompson have been very economical. The match will continue today beginning at 9.30 am.
