Bajan Batsmen Skittled Out By Trinis

There are some things you do to win a cricket match and some things you do to lose. And the way how Barbados batsmen approached a hardly daunting target against Trinidad and Tobago yesterday, they could only have lost in the embarrassing manner and the massive margin that they did by 126 runs.

Set 201 in the allotted 50 overs to complete their third successive victory in the Nortel limited-overs championship, batsman after batsman amazingly gifted their wickets to a series of indiscreet shots and Barbados were stunningly and swiftly bowled out for 74 in 27.4 overs.

Five of the top six were out to false shots mainly against steady but hardly complicated spin bowling and Antonio Mayers and Anthony Hurley were the biggest culprits, both guilty of hitting against the spin.

The words of Barbados coach Richard Straker best summed up the drama that unfolded in brilliant sunshine at Gilbert Park, a ground with a lovely setting in Couva, about 22 miles outside Port-of-Spain.

The batsmen did not settle down. They just threw their hands away. They played a lot of bad shots, Straker said.

To their credit, Barbados managed to limit the Trinidad and Tobagos total to reasonable proportions after the host countrys captain Darren Ganga and his young recruit Zaheer Ali were embarking on a third-wicket partnership of 86 which lifted them to 135 for two.

Barbados delivered their overs so rapidly that they were forced to face six overs before the lunch break.

The extravagance started in that period. Corey Yearwood gave the impression that he wanted to finish the match very early by pulling, driving and cutting for boundaries, but seemed surprised to be given out caught at the wicket after making 18 off 23 balls. He was adjudged to have edged a drive off left-arm fast bowler Asif Jan.

On resumption, Trinidad and Tobago collected wickets with sheer ease. Left-arm spinner Kishmore Lalchan led the way with five for 18, while off-spinner Kenton Thompson supported with three wickets, the pair enjoying themselves in the final demise in which the last eight wickets went for 24 runs.

Shawn Sargeant, driving, was well plucked out at cover, and soon after Graham, playing back and slightly across, was given out caught by the keeper although many thought he was lbw.

Those dismissals brought tremendous responsibility on the shoulders of Mayers and Ryan Hinds, two of Barbados most heralded batsmen.

Both disappointed. Mayers, inexplicably trying to hit against the turn, skied a catch to mid-on off Lalchan and Hinds attempt to hoist Thompson over mid-off resulting in a catch to the fielder three-quarters way in.
