Trinidad and Tobago make amends

Trinidad and Tobago's youth cricket team convincingly whipped Barbados by 126 runs in their third round NorTel West Indies Youth cricket clash at Gilbert Park yesterday. The local team, humbled by Jamaica two days earlier, bounced back to completely outplay the Barbadians and keep alive their chances of copping the 1998 title.

Leading the way for the home team was left-arm spinner Kishore Lalchan whose excellent bowling on the day proved too much for the Bajans. They could only muster 74 runs in reply to the home team's total of 200, Lalchan ending with the in no way flattering figures of 8-2-18-5. The Clico Preysal spinner was well supported by former West Indies Under-15 player Kenton Thompson whose figures read 7.4-2-6-3.

The visitors were off to a flying start in their run chase. Openers Corey Yearwood and Shawn Serjeant knocked up 23 runs off the first four overs.

Yearwood, who had already struck three well-played boundaries by the time the score was 20, was the first to go. He nibbled at a beautiful delivery from pacer Asif Jan that left him outside the off-stump and was caught by wicketkeeper Navin Chan for 18.

Skipper Marlon Graham then joined Serjeant and together they took the score to 41 when Lalchan was introduced. The wily bowler struck in his very first over having Graham caught behind for ten.

Nine runs later, Lalchan flighted a perfect delivery and Serjeant (16) attempted a cover-drive but failed to keep it down and was well taken by Dave Mohammed. That dismissal was the start of a continuous procession to and from the pavilion by the Bajan batsmen who appeared to have no answer to Lalchan and Thompson.

Apart from Yearwood, Serjeant and Graham, none of the other batsmen were able to get into double figures.

Earlier when the home team batted, they were led to their match-winning total by skipper Daren Ganga who blasted his second successive half-century (58) of the series. Ganga struck four fours and one massive six over midwicket off the bowling of Ryan Austin. The Trinidad and Tobago skipper also featured in an exciting third-wicket partnership with former West Indies Under-15 captain Zaheer Ali which produced 86 valuable runs. Ali struck three fours in his 37 while Ricardo Paty, opening instead of the dropped Sherwin Ganga, impressed with 25 and Thompson contributed 22.

Urged on by a very appreciative and fair-sized crowd-former West Indies fast bowler Tony Gray was conspicuous among them-the home team looked very positive and very businesslike.

Having batted well, the whole team supported their bowlers with really outstanding fielding. The catches taken by Asif Jan and Imran Baksh to dismiss Pedro Depeiza (2) and Corey Glasgow (0) respectively were nothing short of brilliant.
