Nortel Semi: Barbados v Leewards

By Garth Wattley

29 July 1998

The Leewards were victims of the weather in their match against Barbados at Gilbert Park. Like Jamaica, the Bajans made it to today's final at the Oval by virtue of recording more tournament wins than their opponents.

At Gilbert Park, put in to bat, the Leewards got off to a good start with Anwar Prince (38) and Adlaide Lake (13) posting 44 runs for the first wicket. But an excellent bowling performance from Antonio Mayers, who claimed four wickets for fifteen runs, saw the Islanders crash to be all out for a mere 117 runs in just 34.4 overs.

In reply, the Barbadians lost opener Corey Yearwood (3), caught by wicketkeeper Quason Alfred off the bowling of Jason Christopher, with the score on 13. Shawn Sarjeant then joined Jason Haynes and together they took the score to 57 off 11.1 overs before the showers came and brought the game to an end. Sarjeant remained unbeaten on 25, including three powerfully struck boundaries while Haynes was unbeaten on 18.
