Despite defending a modest total off 185 runs South Africa 'A' fought back well to dismiss the home side for 139 runs. The medium paceman Garry Gilder led the way with a fine opening spell that reduced the opposition to 42 for 3 at one stage. Sri Lanka 'A' never recovered from this set back despite a fifth wicket stand of 56 runs between Ruwan Kalpage and Lanka de Silva.
Lanka de Silva made a top score of 38 from 60 deliveries with the help of five boundaries. But Herman Bakker polished off the tail with his second spell and finished with a four wicket haul.
Earlier South Africa 'A' were restricted to 185 for 9 from 48 overs after they had won the toss and elected to bat first. They made a disappointing start, losing three quick wickets with only 22 runs on the board. This was mainly due to some superb hostile bowling from Hemantha Boteju who struck twice during his opening spell.
However Test cap H.D. Ackerman rescued the side to a certain extent with a fighting half century. He held the batting together along with skipper Dale Benkenstein with the pair adding 68 useful runs for the fourth wicket. Ackerman went on to hit a top score of 51 from 68 deliveries with the help of four boundaries.
The visitors lost wickets at regular intervals during the latter stages of the innings despite good contributions from Loots Bosman, Nic Pothas and Claude Henderson. The medium paceman Hemantha Boteju had excellent figures of 2 for 18 and was supported by Malintha Warnapura, Pradeep Hewage and Ruchira Palliyaguru.
