Day 2:Arjun and Santosh Yadav steer Hyderabad to safety

Ghulam Ahmed Trophy (Under-19) Second days play at the Gymkhana ground on 29.09.98, between Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu: Hyderabad playing the same elven that played kerala. Play started after the loss of entire pre-lunch session. 274 minutes play was possible in which Hyderabad score 231 runs for the loss of four wickets in 66 overs.

Skipper Santosh Yadav joined opener Avinash Pai and restored the innings with a fine 70 run partnership for the third wicket in 78 minutes and off 21.2 overs, when until tea the latter was batting beautifully and was out facing first ball after tea scoring 57 runs coming in a stay of 132 minutes and having faced 111 balls with eight hits to the fence.

Next to follow was a brilliant batting display of the Yadav's (Santosh and Arjun) who came up with their usual century partnership (Their third successive century partnership in as many innings). This time they added 109 runs for the fourth wicket in just 91 minutes in 29.2 overs. Arjun Yadav started off with a huge 6 over the mid-wicket of the bowling of Tanseer Jabbar and followed it with a fine straight drive. He had 2 more sixes, one each from the bowling of legspinner Velmurughan and left arm spinner Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan. At the other end skipper Santosh Yadav who had a head start of 21 runs when Arjun joined him at 92/3, Opened up to show what he is made up of by hoisting the left arm spinner Vidyut for four sixers on either side of the wickets, long-on and long-off with such awesome power. The hundred for the fourth wicket came in just 87 minutes and 28 overs. Arjun was ultimately consumed by the bowler Velmurugan when he had him caught and bowled for 46.

At close, Santosh Yadav (96) and Sai Laxman (9) were the two not out batsmen at the crease. The play was extended by 60 minutes to close at Hyderabad 231 for 4 wickets in 66 overs.

Day 3: Santosh Yadav scintillates

Result: Draw, Hyderabad (2) Points and Tamil Nadu (2) Points

Hyderabad, overnight 231 for 4, batted for 74 minutes and in 22 overs added 81 runs to declare their first innings at 312 for seven wickets. Skipper Santosh Yadav scoring his third successive century (an unbeaten 154) in as many innings in this competition. His run of scores being 118 against Karnataka, which helped Hyderabad gain the important first innings lead, and again in the second match here at the same venue against Kerala he was unconquered on 178.

Santosh Yadav has an aggregate of 450 runs, averaging 450.00

Tamil Nadu had to bat for a minimum of 67 overs to surpass Hyderabad's total of 312, at an average 4.67 runs per over to gain the vital first innings lead, but their troubles started right in the very first ball of the innings when opener Dllip Sarathy played one off Amresh towards square-leg and ran three-fourths of the pitch for a second run, while his partner Gautam stayed put at the crease. The short leg fielder Avinash Pai did a splendid fielding, to run Dilip Sarathy out at the non-strikers end. The early fall may have dashed the hopes of Tamil Nadu's chase. For the hosts, the young left-arm spinner Vinod Makhija bowled a fine line and length to capture four wickets in his marathon spell, coming in to bowl at 11:36 and finished at 15:59 after bowling 28 overs on the trot (28-8-53-4).

After three matches the points tally for both the teams are Hyderabad 12, and Tamil Nadu 9. Hyderabad has to play its next match against Goa at Gymkhana and the last match against Andhra at Vizianagaram, while Tamil Nadu has to play Kerala at Trivandrum, and Karnataka.
