5th ODI: West Indies v Australia at Georgetown, 21 Apr 1999
Ball-by-Ball Commentary
Match State: Match scheduled to start at 1335 GMT
the bad news is that there is rain in Guyana. The covers are on,
and whilst it isn't presently raining, it is very overcast and the
ground looks very damp
a minimum of 25 overs per side is needed for a match. The latest
possible finishing time is 5:20pm, meaning the match must start by
1:40pm (1740 GMT)
there is no reserve day, so if we get to 1:40pm without play, then
it's off to Barbados for the weekend matches
the covers are being adjusted now, perhaps more in hope than a
realistic expectation, but it's unlikely we'll see any play for a
couple of hours yet
the crowd is a sellout, and they're already packed in to watch
every drop fall
more news as it comes to hand
Match State: Raindrops keep falling on my head
the latest news is that there will be an inspection at 1700 GMT
with a view to having a 30-over game
Match State: 30-over match to start at 1700 GMT
there will be a 6 over limit for each bowler, 9 overs of fielding
restrictions
the boundaries have been brought in, in order to avoid damp patches
in the extreme outfield
Australia have won the toss and will bowl first

25.5 Hooper to Warne, one run, casual pull over the square leg, fielded
in the deep
25.6 Hooper to SR Waugh, no run, floats it up, yorker length, Waugh can
only chop it into the ground, it bounces into the pads

SK Warne 10* (13b 1x4) SR Waugh 49* (51b 3x4 2x6)
33 from 3 overs needed - time to call in the emergency services,
surely a hopeless case
27.1 Hooper to Warne, one run, the umpteenth midtimed pull into the
ground in the past 10 minutes, Hooper fields well and then misses
the direct hit run out
27.2 Hooper to SR Waugh, SIX, onto one knee, huge shot over the wide
long on area, 3rd 6 of the day, lands in the upper deck of the
stand
27.3 Hooper to SR Waugh, no run, misses the pull onto the on side, into
the thigh
27.4 Hooper to SR Waugh, FOUR, sheer slog, brutal thru the mid wicket
area, planted his feet and then hammered it
27.5 Hooper to SR Waugh, FOUR, another one knee pull, not the best of
shots, but worth 4, edges over the keeper's head and down to the
third man boundary
27.6 Hooper to SR Waugh, one run, pokes it into the covers to end a
crowd silencing over
End of over 28 (16 runs) Australia 157/7 (RR: 5.61 RRR: 17/2 = 8.50)
CL Hooper 6-0-48-1 (1nb) - North Road End
SR Waugh 64* (56b 5x4 3x6) SK Warne 11* (14b 1x4)
17 needed off the final 2 overs, and they scored 16 off the last
over
Walsh to bowl this over, Arthurton is being cued for the last
28.1 Walsh to SR Waugh, one run, plays down the wicket
28.2 Walsh to Warne, SIX, another incredible shot, pitched on the
stumps, Warne steps back, and then launches into an airy cross bat
loft over the long on
down to a run a ball needed
28.3 Walsh to Warne, one run, jams it into the on side, and what a
change this match has undergone in the past 5 minutes
28.4 Walsh to SR Waugh, one run, squeezes it down to the mid on
already Arthurton looks like he wants to pull a hamstring as well
28.5 Walsh to Warne, one run, steps back and fends it down to the 3rd
man, bit of a risky jabbed edge
28.6 Walsh to SR Waugh, one run, full toss on the off stump, tapped to
thelong on, and there's a crowd invasion!!
End of over 29 (11 runs) Australia 168/7 (RR: 5.79 RRR: 6/1 = 6.00)
CA Walsh 6-0-32-0 (1nb) - Regent Street End
SR Waugh 67* (59b 5x4 3x6) SK Warne 19* (17b 1x4 1x6)
amazing, the police are on the ground, the stumps have been stolen,
it's unknown whether it was confusion or a sheer act of sabotage
the police were just dozing in front of the member's stand, and
that's where they regather
it's starting to get very late and very dark, the police still
insist on not patrolling in front of the stand where the crowd
invaded from
now the match referee is on the ground, despite the match being
ready to resume with the stumps in place
Arthurton is get the death or glory over
29.1 Arthurton to SR Waugh, two runs, very risky two taken, hit to the
long on, the throw was a little inaccurate and even then just
slipped thru the bowler's hands
29.2 Arthurton to SR Waugh, no run, played hard down the wicket, bowler
fields
29.3 Arthurton to SR Waugh, no run, wide of the off stump, mistimed cut
into the ground, fielded on the on side
4 runs needed from 3 balls
29.4 Arthurton to SR Waugh, no run, goes for the dab to 3rd man, misses!
is Waugh choking? The crowd pick up in volume
4 runs needed from 2 balls
29.5 Arthurton to SR Waugh, no run, inside edge onto the foot, Jacobs
scrambles, Waugh is so obviously frustrated
a boundary 4 needed off the last ball
Arthurton is just keeping it tight, Waugh can't connect with the
middle of the bat
lots of fielding adjustments, Adams is the general
we have no idea what's happened, there's a crowd invasion, it seems
like there was a run out going for the 3rd
the ball was hit into the deep mid wicket area, gathered and
returned to the bowler
29.6 Arthurton to SR Waugh, two runs, must have been a run out, probably
of Warne, West Indies win by 1 run
End of over 30 (4 runs) Australia 172/7 (RR: 5.73 RRR: 2/0 = 0.00)
KLT Arthurton 2-0-12-0 - North Road End
SK Warne 19* (17b 1x4 1x6) SR Waugh 71* (65b 5x4 3x6)
SK Warne run out 19 (17b 1x4 1x6)
and what an amazing last over from Arthurton, Steve Waugh just
couldn't get him away
a mere 4 runs were scored when only 6 were needed
full credit to the crowd - what a bunch of morons
considering 6 years ago the same situation occured, whereby the
referee had to fudge a result based on the crowd invasion
now there's talk of the run out occuring when the batsmen were both
in their crease, and then they tried to sneak the 3rd afterwards,
which sounds a little dodgy
we have confirmation now that the result has not been declared
final yet
the referee Raman Subba Row is analysing the videotapes
oh dear, what a screwup, the result won't be known for 30 minutes
Raman Subba Row will meet with the umpires and captains, analyse
the videotape, and then reach a conclusion
so I guess we play the waiting game..... dum de dum....
the only options are a tie or West Indies win by 1 run
Match State: Waiting for the result to be announced
the news has come in - the match is a tie
we're just waiting for confirmation on how to adjust the scores,
but the match has been officially declared a tie, around 1 hour
after the final ball was bowled
the ruling is that the Australians were prevented making the 3rd
run because of the crowd invasions. When Arthurton went to run out
Steve Waugh all of the stumps had been stolen and so no run out
could be affected
the late decision is so that teh Australians could leave the ground
without a major fear for their safety
so after all of that, the series remains at 2-2, it seems that
perhaps we went thru all the drama for nothing, both weekend games
begin at 1335 GMT, and both are from Barbados. Until then, it's
cheerio from CI.
