KARACHI, March 15: Patron's Trophy champions Habib Bank recorded a facile six-wicket win over International Cricket Council (ICC) winners Bangladesh in the opening match of the 17th Wills Cup National one-day Championship at the UBL Sports Complex here on Sunday.

An impressive 101-run third wicket partnership between opener Shakeel Ahmad and fast-improving Farhan Adil steered the bankers home in 45.3 overs after the tourists had reduced them to 48 for two while defending 213 for nine in 50 overs.

Shakeel scored an attractive 63 while Farhan made a steady 57. But it was veteran Salim Malik who clinched the Man-of-the-Match award for his allround display.

With the red cherry, the former captain picked up two wickets for 18 runs and then contributed an undefeated 42 with the willow. Together with Farhan Adil, Malik shared in a run-a-ball 45 for the fourth wicket.

It was an uninspiring start for the ICC champions who are here on a preparation trip for next year's World Cup in England. It was not that they lacked the talent, but it was the experience that they were missing. The batsmen struggled to find gaps while the fielders, after the mid-way, apparently ran out of steam probably because of the fitness as heat and humidity were no strangers to them.

After Salim Malik won the toss and put Aminul Islam's Bangladesh into bat, Javed Omer batted at a snail's pace to score 17 off 60 balls. And though Minhajul Abedin and Aminul Islam accelerated the scoring rate, failed to guide their team to a competitive score. Thanks to a four-ball 16 by Hasibul Hussain, two sixes and a four off Akram Raza's final over, Bangladesh reached 213 for nine in 50 overs.

Abedin showed a lot of guts and promise while scoring 71 - highest individual score of the match. He batted with a mixture of controlled aggression by hitting six boundaries from 96 balls. Abedin picked up calculated singles as evident from the fact that his fist 50 runs off 68 balls included just four hits to the fence.

Skipper Islam struck three boundaries in his 56-ball 32 before his stumps were shattered by his counterpart Salim Malik. With Abedin, Islam put on 50 runs for the third wicket after Abedin had added 70 runs for the second wicket with Javed Omer.

Bangladesh scored 55 off the first 15 overs and reached 130 after 30 overs.

Taking into account the fast outfield, experience of Habib Bank and friendly wicket, the victory target was never a difficult one for the bankers.

But the bankers nearly made a mess of things when they slumped to 48 for two. Hasibul Husain, who bowled accurately and intelligently to give away 28 runs in his 10 overs, first picked up the wicket of Tahir Rasheed and then Khalid Mahmood grabbed the scalp of Mujahid Jamsheed.

However, the experience of Shakeel Ahmad and talent of Farhan Adil combined to share in a 101-run third wicket stand off 121 balls to put Habib Bank on the verge of victory.

Even though after Shakeel was smartly caught at mid-wicket by Saifuddin after scoring a 105-ball 63 with seven boundaries at the score of 143, Salim Malik continued with the good job.

He remained unbeaten on 42 off 50 balls that included four boundaries and a match-winning six.

Bangladesh's last success of the match came when Farhan Adil attempted a pre-determined shot over the wicketkeeper's head to be caught by the man with the gloves. However, Adil, overlooked for the 'A' series, displayed tremendous courage, patience and a variety of strokes to hit 57 off 76 balls with three exquisite boundaries.
