AXA round up: De Silva the crucial element

KENT went joint top of the table with Essex after a nine-wicket
win over Somerset at Taunton.

The home side made a modest 166 for seven and were, at one time,
18 for five. They recovered through Graham Rose, who made 59, and
Simon Ecclestone (41). Kent lost Matthew Fleming in the first
over but Aravinda de Silva, with 105, and Trevor Ward (52) saw
them home without further loss.

For the second time in three seasons a Sunday League game at
Grace Road had to be abandoned because of a dangerous pitch.

Leicestershire`s match against Lancashire was abandoned after 7.2
overs with the home side at 35 for one and a new game started on
the adjacent pitch on which the championship fixture finished the
previous day.

Umpires Bob White and Graham Burgess and captains Nigel Briers
and Wasim Akram decided the original pitch was too dangerous when
Leicestershire opener Vince Wells was struck by a ball from Peter
Martin.

Leicestershire won the match by six wickets. After Lancashire
made 198 for seven they were steered to victory by Hansie Cronje,
who made 93 not out off 89 balls.

Tim Curtis and Tom Moody took Worcestershire to within four
points of the League leaders with a 10-wicket thumping of Der-
byshire at New Road. Moody made 99 in a partnership of 165 in 35
overs after Derbyshire mustered only 163.

A hundred off 74 balls by Alistair Brown paved the way for
Surrey`s 12-run victory over Yorkshire at the Oval. Surrey
to- talled 308 for six, with Yorkshire finishing on 296 for
eight.
