SUNLG: Review of R17, 29 Aug 1993

(Sunday) AXA Equity & Law League : 29th August 1993 Review

NORTHANTS v LEICS: Northampton
Russell Warren's Sunday League best unbeaten 71 steered Northants
to a seven wicket victory over Leics with 6.2 overs to spare.
Leicestershire's innings hit early trouble at 69 4 as spinners
Nick Cook and Rob Bailey kept them to 196 6. Warren hit eight
fours in reply and shared an enterprising stand of 93 with skip-
per Allan Lamb (42no) as Northants overhauled the visitors' mod-
est score.

NOTTS v DERBYS: Trent Bridge
Nottinghamshire stormed to a record breaking 142 run victory over
Derbyshire with a performance which belied their lowly League po-
sition. Notts raced to their highest ever total in one day
cricket with Paul Pollard (91) and Paul Johnson (75) helping
them along to a commanding 329 6. Peter Bowler and Chris Adams
went early as Derbys slipped to 36 3 before Adrian Rollins hit a
consolation 57.

GLAMORGAN v GLOUCS: Ebbw Vale
Glamorgan equalled the record of 12 successive Sunday League vic-
tories set by Middlesex with a 31 run success over Gloucester-
shire. Matthew Maynard spearheaded the Glamorgan innings with a
fine 69 that included two sixes and five fours as they totalled
242 9. Gloucs were dismissed for 211 in reply Steve Watkin and
Adrian Dale doing the damage with three wickets each.

LANCS v KENT: Old Trafford
Carl Hooper produced another great one man show to keep Kent in
the Sunday League title hunt at Old Trafford giving away only 21
runs in 10 overs. Lancashire were bowled out for 192 with Graham
Lloyd top scoring on 53. Matthew Fleming claimed 4 46 for Kent.
Hooper then replied with a magnificant 87 to steer Kent to a six
wicket win with 7.3 overs to spare finishing with a six off Mike
Watkinson.

ESSEX v MIDDLESEX: Colchester
A thrilling tie was fought out at Colchester as Essex chased Mid-
dlesex's total of 236 6. The Middlesex innings was built around
a superb 101 off 109 balls by opener Desmond Haynes. Essex needed
just 10 runs off the last two overs. Despite having five wickets
in hand Essex slumped to 236 all out as Paul Weekes (4 46) and
Richard Johnson (3 35) salavged a tie for the visitors.

WARKS v WORCS: Edgbaston
Warwickshire all rounder Paul Smith confirmed his fitness for the
NatWest Final with figures of 5 36 from 10 overs in their 44 run
win over Worcs. Warks met early trouble after electing to bat
and were 38 3 before Dominic Ostler (43) and Asif Din (42) pulled
them round to 188 7. A burst of four wickets in 33 balls from
Smith effectively settled the issue for Warks.

HANTS v SUSSEX: Portsmouth
Magnificent centuries from Robin Smith and Paul Terry enabled
Hampshire to record an eight wicket victory in a dramatic win.
Skipper Alan Wells set Sussex on their way with a tremendous 127
out of a mammoth 312 8. Robin Smith (129) was the aggressor in
reply smashing 100 off 84 balls finely aided by Paul Terry (124)
as Hants won on the final ball.

SURREY v SOMERSET: The Oval
A fine unbeaten 47 by Adam Hollioake steered Surrey to a
thrilling five wicket victory over Somerset. Hollioake had ar-
rived at the crease with Surrey 162 4 needing 77 to pass Somer-
set's 238 8 with a little under 10 overs left. Somerset's Mark
Lathwell made a fine 85 in their total before Mark Butcher and
Hollioake came together with Butcher (22no) getting the winning
runs.

YORKSHIRE v DURHAM: Headingley
A brilliant century by opener Wayne Larkins (114) and a fine
spell of spin bowling by skipper David Graveney led Durham to a
13 run win over Yorkshire. Larkins partnership with Paul Parker
was worth 139 as they cruised to a total of 230 9. Yorkshire's
hopes were fuelled by an opening stand of 91 in 24 overs between
David Byas (28) and Martyn Moxon (64) before Graveney held them
to 217 9.
