SUNLG: Review of R11, 18 Jul 1993

Sunday League: July 18 1993

Glamorgan are two point clear of the Sunday League table after
winning their seventh successive one-day game with an eight wick-
et victory over Lancashire at Old Trafford. Skipper Hugh Mor-
ris's unbeaten 87 helped Glamorgan race past Lancashire's modest
167 with 17 overs to spare. Lancashire 167-9 (M.A. Atherton 64).
Glamorgan 168-2 (H. Morris 87no, M.P. Maynard 72). Glamorgan
won by 8 wickets.

Joint leaders Kent were left cursing their luck as rain ruined
their match at Hove. Sussex were dismissed for 177 and Kent
replied with three without loss as they chased a revised target
of 126 in 34 overs. Sussex 177 (N.J. Llong 4-24). Kent 3-0. Match
abandoned no result.

Surrey completed a weekend double over Gloucestershire with a
comfortable victory at Guildford to follow their championship
success. Rain reduced the target to scoring rate and Surrey and
finished on 110 for one off 23.3 overs in reply to Gloucester-
shire's 155 all out. Gloucestershire 155. Surrey 110-1. Surrey
won by higher run rate.

England batsman Robin Smith hit a sparkling 79 before heavy
rain forced the abandonment of Hampshire's match against Worces-
tershire at Portsmouth. Hampshire 203-5 (R.A. Smith 79; C.M. Tol-
ley 4-50) v Worcestershire. Match abandoned no result.

A brilliant opening partnership of 165 in 31 overs between
skipper Martyn Moxon (70) and David Byas (88 not out) earned
Yorkshire a nine-wickets win to dent Northamptonshire's title
prospects at Headingley. Northamptonshire 172-9 (M.A. Robinson
4-23). Yorkshire 175-1 (D. Byas 88no, M.D. Moxon 70). Yorkshire
won by 9 wickets.

Nottinghamshire chalked up their fourth limited overs success
in a week by beating fellow strugglers Somerset by four wickets
at Trent Bridge. Somerset 200-9 (G.D. Rose 50no). Notting-
hamshire 203-6 (C.L. Cairns 73). Nottinghamshire won by 4 wick-
ets.

Essex found a modest-looking 192 total enough to beat Leices-
tershire by 26 runs at Southend. Derek Pringle and John Stephen-
son polished off the visitors with three wickets apiece. Essex
192. Leicestershire 166. Essex won by 26 runs.

Middlesex snatched victory over Warwickshire as heavy rain
forced a controversial finish at Edgbaston. Middlesex 261-2 (D.L.
Haynes 142 no, M.A. Roseberry 66). Warwickshire 253-8 (Asif Din
94, D.P. Ostler 83, P.N. Weekes 4-49). Middlesex won by higher
run rate.

Warwickshire, chasing 262, needed eight with two wickets left
with one over left. But Middlesex captain Mike Gatting argued
conditions were unfair to his side and the umpires took the play-
ers off. An angry home crowd was then told that the visitors had
won on a faster scoring rate. Des Haynes starred with a League-
best 142 not out. He was supported by Mike Roseberry (66) in an
opening stand of 175.
