DERBYSHIRE v NORTHANTS: Derby
Day 1 : 09 Sep 1993
Northants cashed in on a dismal Derbys batting display to boost
their chances of a lucrative championship pay day. Allan Lamb`s
team ran through their oponents with Kevin Curran claiming 4-35
as they slumped to 127 all out in just 35 overs. Skipper Kim
Bar- nett helped steer his side to a respectable total with a
battling 53. Northants reached 3-0 at the close.
Day 3 : 11 Sep 1993
Curtly Ambrose fired a warning to England`s winter tourists by
returning his best county figures in three years to lift
Northants into second place. The giant West Indian paceman took
6-49 as his side won by an innings and 46 runs against Der-
byshire. Derbys had no answer to him and once he had reduced
them to 57-5 any hopes they had of scoring 241 to make the visi-
tors bat again had vanished.
GLAMORGAN v ESSEX: Cardiff
Day 4 : 13 Sep 1993
Glamorgan edged to their ninth win of the season with a nail bit-
ing triumph over Essex with 37 balls remaining. After declaring
at 217-5, Steve Bastien claimed 6-53 as Essex slumped to 217 all
out with Steve Watkin claiming his 90th wicket of the season.
Jonathan Lewis hit a battling 54 as Essex vainly bidded for vic-
tory while Mark Ilott and Peter Such staged a defiant ninth wick-
et stand of 41.
GLOUCS v NOTTS: Bristol
Day 1 : 09 Sep 1993
Andy Pick and Chris Lewis combined to put Gloucestershire on the
rack on the first day of their championship clash with Notts at
Bristol. Pick bagged 2-29 while England reject Lewis claimed 2-36
as Gloucs struggled to 132-5 before rain halted play. Chris Broad
hit a battling 21 in 97 minutes while Bobby Dawson made a defiant
30 after Pick bowled opener Dean Hodgson with his first delivery.
Day 4 : 13 Sep 1993
Rain thwarted Gloucestershire`s victory charge as Notts made a
present of easy runs in a bid to force a result at a weather hit
Bristol. Gloucs smashed 173 in an hour as batsmen Paul Pollard
and Wayne Dessaur helped Martyn Ball (71) and Bobby Dawson (58)
put a 130 run stand. Gloucs had declared at 232-4 but Notts fin-
ished on 155-6 after the rain hit 104 runs short of victory.
HAMPSHIRE v LEICS: Southampton
Day 1 : 09 Sep 1993
David Millns continued his return from injury with a five star
performance against Hampshire at Southampton. The Leicestershire
star recovering from an achilles tendon operation took 5-21 as
Hampshire were dismissed for a dismal 115. His five wicket return
takes his tally to 23 in eight championship innings to boost his
claims for an England-A call to South Africa this winter.
MIDDLESEX v LANCASHIRE: Lord`s
Day 1 : 09 Sep 1993
Mike Gatting hit an impressive 54 not out to impress watching
England boss Keith Fletcher and then hinted he may step down as
Middlesex skipper. Gatting`s innings helped the champions reached
136-2 against Lancashire on a rain shortened first day. It would
be unfair for me to stay on too long and I`ve got to judge when
it`s best for the club for me to stand down said Gatting.
Day 3 : 11 Sep 1993
Mark Ramprakash made a patient century as new champions Middlesex
reached 328-7 against Lancashire at Lord`s. Ramprakash`s un-
beaten 117 was only his second first class ton of the summer and
was perfectly timed with England`s tour of the Caribbean in mind.
When play finally got underway after lunch he and Mike Gatting
put on 131 for the third wicket before Gatting was caught off
Philip DeFreitas.
WARWICKS v SOMERSET: Edgbaston
Day 1 : 09 Sep 1993
Openers Andy Mole and Jason Ratcliffe made Warwicks` first centu-
ry stand since July 1 in a rain hit day against Somerset at Edg-
baston. The pair put on an unbroken 111 in between a long delay
for overnight rain and an early finish through bad light. Moles
hit eight fours in an unbeaten 53 while Ratcliffe reached 44 hit-
ting six boundaries as Warwicks reached 111-0 at the premature
close.
Day 3 : 11 Sep 1993
Mushtaq Ahmed showed his versatility as Somerset and Warwickshire
juggled to revive a rain hit match at Edgbaston. The Pakistani
Test star bowled left arm spin and medium pace to grab 6-55 as
Warwicks slumped to 282. Somerset then declared at 61-0. In
Warwickshire`s second innings, Andy Moles and Jason Ratcliffe put
on 162 for the first wicket before Mushtaq struck. Warwickshire
reached 118-1 and declared at the close, leaving Somerset a tar-
get of 340 on the final day for victory.
Day 4 : 13 Sep 1993
Overnight rain prevented any play before lunch and the umpires
and Warwickshire wanted to start at 2pm., but Somerset disagreed.
Believing his team could no longer win, acting-captain harden ob-
jected to playing in conditions no different from those earlier
deemed unfit. A telephone call to lord`s produced a ruling that
upheld his view and Warwickshire`s final home-game was thus aban-
doned, leaving spectators baffled. (D4 report based on 1994 Wis-

YORKSHIRE v SUSSEX: Scarborough
Day 1 : 09 Sep 1993
Neil Lenham brightened up a rain hit day at Scarborough after the
weather restricted play to just 35 overs. Lenham hammered 27 in
22 balls as Sussex reached 97-2 at tea having won the toss before
the weather cut the day`s play short. His quickfire innings was
ended by Peter Hartley who also sent back Keith Greenfield to end
a vital 52 run partnership with Bill Athey.
