Day 2 06 August 1993

NORTHANTS v ESSEX: Northampton
Alan Fordham defied Essex with a steady 160 his third champi-
onship century of the season as Northamptonshire built up a
useful first innings lead of 84.
Fordham who opened the innings overnight was ninth out in the
112th over after batting for six hours 40mins
None of the other batsmen made a major contribution but Northants
reached 370 to secure maximum bonus points. At the close Essex
were 18-1 still 66 adrift.

GLOUCS v LANCS: Cheltenham
Mark Alleyne and Tim Hancock led a Gloucestershire fightback
against a Phillip DeFreitas inspired Lancashire attack at Chel-
tenham.
DeFreitas bidding to regain his England spot took three wickets
for six runs in five overs as the home side slipped from 116 1 to
131 4.
But uncapped 21 year old Hancock hit a solid 59 and put on 107
with Alleyne as Gloucs rallied to close at 315-7.

GLAMORGAN v WARKS: Cardiff
Title contenders Glamorgan need to score just 138 in their second
innings on Saturday to beat Warwickshire in their Championship
clash at Cardiff.
Jason Ratcliffe and skipper Dermot Reeve had shared a 95 run
fourth wicket stand for the visitors to give them a glimmer of
hope on a tricky pitch.
But when they were all out for 248 in reply to the hosts 236 the
odds had swung back in the home side's favour.

DURHAM v DERBYS: Durham Univ
Spinner Richard Sladdin starred with the bat to lead injury hit
Derbyshire's recovery against Durham.
He hit a career best unbeaten 51 as the home side recovered from
218-8 to 322 all out with Adrian Rollins and Frank Griffiths also
making fifties.
Acting skipper John Morris had begun the Derbys innings with a
thumping 45 before it fell apart in mid order. Durham closed at
7-0 from five overs.

NOTTS v YORKSHIRE: Trent Bridge
Kevin Evans produced career best figures of 6-67 to enable injury
hit Nottinghamshire to overturn the odds and gain a first innings
lead of 76.
Notts' attack was depleted by injuries to off spinner Michael
Field Buss and New Zealander Chris Cairns leaving them with only
three frontline bowlers.
Evans helped by Andy Afford and Chris Lewis skittled Yorks for
240. But in their second innings Notts were 2-1.

SUSSEX v WORCS: Hove
Skipper Alan Wells cracked a chanceless unbeaten 128 as Sussex
piled up 412-6 to lead Worcestershire by 159 runs.
Wells struck 13 fours off 106 balls in reaching his fourth 100 of
the season in just over four hours and he registered 1,000 runs
for the campaign.
Worcestershire who tried eight bowlers suffered as Wells shared
a fourth wicket stand of 127 in 33 overs with the aggressive
Martin Speight.

MIDDLESEX v LEICS: Lord's
Angus Fraser tore Leics apart with a career best 7-40 at Lord's
as runaway leaders Middlesex stormed towards their ninth champi-
onship win of the season.
Fraser showing the form that made him an England regular pro-
duced two superb spells that shot out the visitors for a paltry
114.
Forced to follow on in the face of Middesex's mammoth 551-5 de-
clared Leicestershire were 44-1 by the close.

KENT v SURREY: Canterbury
Surrey supporter John Major called in at Canterbury and saw his
favourites punished by Trevor Ward's overdue first championship
hundred of the season.
The Prime Minister had witnessed a post lunch Surrey collapse in
which the last four wickets fell for just 11 runs though they
managed a total of 464.
Then Ward along with first Mark Benson (61) then Carl Hooper
(55no) pushed Kent to 266-2 in reply.
