Editorial
By John Ward

Welcome to the first issue of Zimbabwe cricket's weekly on-line magazine. We plan to be here every week with much more information about Zimbabwe cricket at all levels than the Zimbabwe cricket page was able to provide in the past. [more]

RACKEMANN AND WOOLMER TO COACH
Former Australian pace bowler Carl Rackemann is coming to Zimbabwe to be attached to our national team to assist our bowlers from 1 to 23 December. In addition Bob Woolmer is being seconded to us by UCBSA for a week in December to assist our National side.
FEATURE ARTICLES
Guest column, by George Goodwin
"ZIMBABWE cricket needs a tonic and it must be administered now before the "virus" that has gripped the national team takes a stranglehold. From an impressive 1998 with promising performances against powerhouse Pakistan, including an historic first away series win on the sub-continent, to a Super Six spot at the World Cup earlier this year the national team has been dealt a body blow." INTERVIEWS

  • Guy Whittall on the Bloemfontein Test
"I thought that if I could manage to get the ball to come back off the seam I might get Jacques Kallis out. I said to Pommie Mbangwa the over before, 'I can do it, I'll get him out,' because he is a class act." [more | Scorecard]
  • Gavin Rennie on the Sri Lankans and the Harare Test against South Africa "I was down to bat at number seven again, after opening the innings in all my previous Tests. Obviously I would prefer to open, and I think my statistics show I've done quite well opening. It's disappointing to me to have lost that opportunity." [more | Scorecard | Sri Lankan tour]
TOUR AND MATCH REPORTS
  • CFX Academy v Sri Lankans, by Gwynne Jones [Report]
  • Review of Zimbabwe v South Africa at Harare Sports Club
"This is a major complaint of Zimbabwe players. "Other countries prepare pitches to give their players home advantage, so why can't we?" they understandably cry. The Harare Sports Club pitch, with quite a bit of grass left on it, favoured the South African pace attack far more than it did Zimbabwe's comparatively inexperienced seamers."[more | Scorecard]
  • Preview of Sri Lankan Test series
It is five years since Sri Lanka last visited Zimbabwe for what was popularly termed, especially in England, as the 'basement battle' for the bottom place in the Test cricket ladder. Since then, both teams have come a long way..." [more]

CURRENT ISSUES

The captaincy, by John Ward
"When asked when he first thought seriously of resigning, Campbell admitted with a smile, but not altogether humorously, that it crossed his mind every time Zimbabwe lost a match." [more] DOMESTIC CRICKET

  • Zimbabwe Board XI in South Africa, by Trevor Penney
The Zimbabwe Board XI has recently returned from a three-week tour of South Africa, where they won four matches out of six against North West B, Easterns B and KwaZulu-Natal B. [more]
  • Club cricket report, by club representatives
We plan to include regular news from the clubs nationwide. For this issue we were able only to contact Harare clubs, as we are having difficulty in finding correspondents elsewhere.[Report | Vigne Cup]
  • Development cricket news, by Karigai Motsi
"The popularity of cricket in Zimbabwe continues to grow. Young boys and girls are not prepared to wait for school days to play the game at school. They are playing cricket on any piece of land, driveways, back yards, streets or open ground." [more]
  • Schools cricket, by Peter Whalley
We have asked the cricket masters of the leading high schools in the country to give us a brief report on the cricket played at their schools during 1999. We invite those schools who have not yet contributed to send their reports to the editor for inclusion. [Review]
