As a batsman, Mongia's credentials were firmly established back in 1996
when he cracked 152 against Australia in the one off Test at Delhi. The
Australian bowling attack at that time was spearheaded by Glenn McGrath,
with Paul Reiffel and company for support. The fact that the next highest
score for India in that innings was 66 from Sourav Ganguly tells its own
story. In Test cricket Mongia averages a handy if unspectacular 24, with
over 1400 runs from 44 matches. Considered to be a bit of a slow scorer in
One-Day cricket, Mongia has done his best to improvise in the recent past.
