Which is the only team to be involved in two tied Tests? (19 September 2001)
There are devastating losses and remarkable victories. There are still more
dull draws in the history of Test cricket. But there another category that
is far more interesting. the Tied Tests. When the Brisbane Cricket Ground
played host to Sir Frank Worrell's West Indians in 1960-61 little did
anyone imagine that the Test would actually be tied. After scoring 453
thanks a Sir Garfield Sobers ton, the Windies let the Aussies make 505 with
Norman O' Neill making 181. As Alan Davidson (6/87) ran through the
visitors' batting the men from the Caribbean slumped to 284 all out,
leaving the Australians with a target of 233. A Wes Hall 5fer and a string
of run outs meant the Aussies were 232 all out and the Test was tied!
It was a full 25 years later that the feat was repeated. And Australia
became the first team to be involved in two tied Tests. A legendary innings
of 210 from Dean Jones in exhausting heat took Australia to a first innings
total of 574. India replied with 397 as skipper Kapil Dev played a vital
hand, scoring a ton late in the order. Declaring their second innings
closed at 170, Australia set India a target of 348. Even chasing the
improbable target, the Indians got to the very edge of victory making 347
all out off 86.5 overs when Maninder Singh was given out lbw.
