Which keeper has got the most Test centuries? (28th May 2001)
©AFP |
Andy Flower's indomitable unbeaten 232 against India in the second
Test at Nagpur in November 2000 was his ninth Test century. In the process,
Flower went clear of Les Ames to take sole possession of
the record for most Test centuries by a keeper. Ames, who struck
eight tons in 47 Tests for England before World War II, remains
the only wicket keeper with 100 first class centuries. Flower has
kept wickets in 46 of the 50 Tests he's played for Zimbabwe (Wayne James
wielding the gloves in the other four) in which role all his centuries have
accrued. Three of those have been against India, of which his 232 not out
is also the highest individual score by a keeper in Test history.

Amongst other contenders, Alec Stewart has 14 Test centuries but
only five as wicket keeper. Similarly Clyde Walcott, one of the
three famous W's, also had 14 Test centuries but again only three
were produced when he served duty as keeper. The Indian record is
admittedly modest. Three keepers, Budhi Kunderan, Farokh Engineer
and Syed Kirmani, all have two tons each. Both Kunderan's efforts
came in the same series, against England in 1963/64, when he made
525 runs in the five Tests. An admirable show but paling in
comparison to Flower who collected 540 runs in just two matches.
