Which current Test cricketer played alongside his father in the same first
class match? (11 June 2001)
The final of the 1995/96 Logan Cup (Zimbabwe's equivalent of the
Ranji Trophy) between Matabeleland and Mashonaland County Districts
was remarkable for more than one reason. Current Zimbabwe skipper
Heath Streak played for the Matabeleland side. So did his father
Denis who played several times for Zimbabwe before the national
team gained Test status. Heath was 22 and Denis 46. The elder Streak,
a right hand batsman and right arm medium pacer, made three and
bowled five overs without reward. His son had slighly greater
success, taking four wickets and scoring 30.
But the man who won the Logan Cup for Matabeleland was their
skipper and wicket keeper Wayne James. He created a world record
for the most dismissals in a first class match. James who kept
for Zimbabwe in four Tests, when Andy Flower was briefly estranged
from the job, effected a stunning nine dismissals in the first
innings and added four more for good measure in the second,
closing with a tally of 13. Incredibly he also struck 99 and 99
not out in the same game, only missing his century in the second innings
because a wide ball from bowler Brian Strang went for four
byes to hand Matabeleland the Cup.
