Who is the only batsman to score an ODI century at No.7? (09 July 2001)
Rarely has an Indian wicketkeeper stolen the thunder with his bat
as Samir Dighe did in the Coca-Cola Cup final on Saturday. India were
tottering at 80/5 after the West Indies quicks had taken a volley of
potshots at the celebrated top order when Dighe stepped into the crossfire.
The Mumbai captain smote an unbeaten 94 which ferried India to within 17
runs of an unlikely victory. Dighe's effort is the highest score by a
specialist Indian stumper by a long chalk. Only Rahul Dravid who made 145
against Sri Lanka at Taunton in the 1999 World Cup as a stand-in for the
injured Nayan Mongia remains beyond the pale.
Dighe missed the rare distinction of making a century at No.7, so rare that
only one batsman has done so in ODI history. That occurred at the climax of
an extraordinary face-off between Sri Lanka and West Indies at Sharjah in
October 1995. Brian Lara's magnificent 169 was the centrepiece of what
appeared an invincible total of 333 and the odds on any result other than a
West Indies victory lengthened even further as Sri Lanka plummetted to
103/5. Enter Hashan Tillekeratne. The intrepid left hander took charge of a
desperate situation and hauled things around so dramatically that, as the
last over by Anderson Cummins got underway, Sri Lanka needed just eight
runs with one wicket left. Three runs accrued off the first two balls but
Tillekaratne swung the third into the hands of Stuart Williams at deep mid
wicket, bringing an end to one of the most frenetic run chases in ODIs. He
had made precisely one hundred.
