Sachin's tons in most cases have not impressed the Man of the Match adjudicator: (20th April 2001)
Considering that Sachin Tendulkar has scored 25 Test centuries, he must
have been in the running for at least the same number of Man of the Match
awards. In actual point of fact, he has just eight Man of the Match awards
in his kitty, and on two of those occasions he didn't even make a century.
His first Test century against England at Old Trafford earned him a Man of
the Match award as did his highest Test score of 217 against New Zealand at
Ahmedabad. Four of the eight awards were at Chennai, including a rain
affected game against New Zealand when he made a mere unbeaten 52.
Of the eight Tests, India lost three, drew three and won just two (against
England and Australia, both at Chennai). Six have been at home and only two
abroad. His last award came against South Africa in February 2000 when he
made 97 and took 3/10, his best bowling figures. In six Tests he played in
the 2000-01 season, Tendulkar has not collected any silverware in spite of
making two centuries and a double hundred. Finally Tendulkar also has two
Man of the Series prizes in his showcase. Both came in the Border-Gavaskar
Trophy: in India in 1997/98 and Australia in 1999/2000. In the latest
edition of the duel however, Tendulkar was beaten to the spoils by spin
prodigy Harbhajan Singh.
